We have all APCs and they work fine in our DC. They work fine for us which include our windows and linux servers.

    @wrx7m said in UPS Replacement:

I had 4x TrippLite 3U 3000VA units with their SNMP Webcards for network monitoring and control. The webcards were horrible. I always had issues with them locking up, losing certain settings upon reboot/power-cycle (which required them to be physically removed from the chassis) and had to replace several of them. TrippLite support was just as bad as their products. I loved getting woken up by my PRTG alerts at 3 in the morning when it couldn't communicate with those stupid cards.

At the 5-year mark, I finally ditched them in favor of some Eaton 5PX3000RT2U units with the NMS network card. I had already been using 2 of those for over a year without issue for my edge switch rack and am using and am mostly pleased. So I now have 6. I also have some 3rd gen PDUs and EATS 120s. The only thing I don't like about the ATS is that they don't have the ability to control the individual outlets, hence the additional need for a PDU.

I really like the Eaton 5PX line myself. Never upgraded the one we had with the network card tho.

@Mike-Davis I have the previous generation of this model, without the LCD panel:
    https://www.tripplite.com/OmniSmart-LCD-120V-1500VA-810W-Line-Interactive-UPS-Tower-LCD-display-USB-port-Energy-Star~OMNI1500LCDT
Keeps the wife's desktop, monitor and IP phone (as well as our router) up for a good hour before the battery runs low. Tripp Lite's PowerAware software is OK, it does shut the desktop down when it reaches a threshold (I think I have it set at 50%) and does show all cool status of the power incoming to the UPS itself including spikes and sags.

The link is more recent, because he mention XS 7.

I got acancel AARP (done, should have check by 4/13 and no mailings by 6 weeks from 3/16)I got about 50% of the way into this, and had to move on to other projects. But I really need to get back to it.

I'll add another note for future reference here.

For Fedora 39 Server, apcupsd has another package apcupsd-cgi that can be used with a web server to display UPS status. However, you have to move the files it installs by default because they're not in the /var/www/cgi-bin directory.

sudo dnf install -y apcupsd apcupsd-cgi httpd
    sudo mv /var/www/apcupsd /var/www/cgi-bin/
    sudo chown apache:apache /var/www/cgi-bin/apcupsd/*
    sudo systemctl enable --now httpd

Should get it up and running.
I found 3 useful tools with it.

@whizzard said in Adventures in Graceful VM Shutdown:

How does the licensing work with multiple UPS?

The answer is...it depends. If you want OpMonis to monitor multiple UPS devices and shutdown things gracefully, it can do that using a single license but will only allow one shutdown list and would begin shutting down things as soon as your predefined threshold is hit for any one of the monitored UPS devices.

The other option is to get a second license of OpMonis to monitor the second UPS and have a dedicated shutdown list just for that UPS and its connected equipment.

ozone or new electronics getting warm?

    Any hot spots on it?

Don't forget it'll be going like stink right now charging up that battery

    Nothing warmer than expected.

The battery is listed as 77% full.

I think you're fine unless it's really horrendous - probably just all the components warming up for the first time. Those things really suck down some current when charging the battery and running the PC.

This, I did this in an enclosed small room and the smell of ozone was overpowering when first bringing up fresh out-of-the-box UPSs (Eatons) not sure if it is normal or not but there were no long term effects. Other then having to leave the door open for a few days.

Damn a few days? ug! I rarely leave my door open...

After the first day it was still barely noticeable by no means strong or overpowering. By the third day it was gone.

My door is the control door to our data closet. I rarely leave it open, even when I'm inside. So I suppose I've trapped the smell in here with me.

I'll leave the door open while I'm here today and we'll see what happens.

and damnit.. now I have to go fishing for the box..

And it is more than just drain, it is partially defeating the purpose of the second PSU. It's like having two NICs bonded on your server but only having one switch to plug them into. Sure, it is better than nothing, but it is not delivering the redundancy that you hope for or pay for. If anything goes wrong with that one UPS the redundant PSUs will be useless.

NTG started using network UPS in 2000. APC SmartUPS supported that even way back then.

I've asked for an OK for funds to purchase a model that can support up to 1800 watts, something like a desktop model that can attach to the network, and allow for Solaris systems to detect they are on battery and shutdown without my interaction. Tripplite is getting back with me, hopefully it's not overly expensive.
