    • Resignation - And what's next

      Well - Sad to say, but I am turning in my resignation tomorrow. As I have done for each employer, I will be giving the customary two week notice.

      There are no BAD JOBS.
      There are;

      • gross jobs;
      • difficult jobs;
      • unpopular jobs;
      • labor intensive jobs;
      • boring jobs.

      I am not leaving a BAD Job. I am leaving a difficult supervisor.

      I started in IT in 1989, having already spent three or so years working with computers, so at this stage I have learned a thing or two... And when you offer experience on a matter you have first hand knowledge about - and they 'laugh at your offerings' it's just not the place for you... or at least me.

      In the past when I offered options on how to address an issue or assistance it's been welcomed. But in this case it wasn't just discarded, it was laughed at. I'm sorry - I can get past a few things about a personality conflict - but to have my knowledge laughed at is more than I'm going to tolerate.

      So, after starting in August - I now look towards the future. I am already looking a start date as a contractor with a company to support a State Agency - performing desktop and server support. It is a twelve month on-going assignment and will provide with most of what I have now.... there are some cuts,.. but that is just life.

      But in addition to this, I may be providing direct support for another company a good friend of my is getting ready to start working for. He and I have already spent a number of hours on the phone and text going over things this new office will likely need. Things that he hasn't had direct exposure to. And he is very open and welcoming to the knowledge I have in areas he hasn't worked with.

      Like some of the things I"ve picked up here;

      • freePBX;
      • NextCloud;
      • Server 2019;
      • VMs on Linux;
      • UBNT Wireless;
      • DNS;
      • Email (Zoho or O365)

      So, for now - I breath a little more quickly as this is an exciting opportunity for me to learn more, and showcase what I have learned.

      Shout outs of course go to a of people here on ML;

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

      @thwr

      What better way to get a loaner computer set up than to come here and update everyone.

      It's not been easy,.. any parent will tell you that. But when you have two boys that have been under the knife in two weeks,... it's even more stressful

      Finn had follow up foot surgery, so this wasn't as critical as what Ison is enduring. Finn only needed to have some tendon moved to allow more flexibility.

      Ison - this is the big deal for us... never with any of my four boys have I been so scared and worried.

      The doctors were in about 8am today and set about some goals for the day... Of which we had met two by 9am. Remove the cath, and move.

      It isn't easy for him with all the abdomenal pain he has,.. I mean, his appendix was obliterated,.. they could not find it. There was 'little which they could do' with the swelling and most of his lower organs being 'glued' together. Had they gone poking and pushing to much, it was likely that they would have caused additional damage and risk.

      For a six year old boy - he has been amazing. I know he is scared, in a lot of pain, and doesn't want to do ANYTHING that will cause him more pain. But he has been amazing. We have run into about everything that is expected thus far with this sort of thing. And we have met it head on. For the most part, he is exactly where he needs to be progress wise.

      As any parent will tell you, I only wish I could trade places with him... not saying I would have any better go of it,.. cry or scream any less... I just don't want it to be him, or any child.

      I have been so very blessed for the care we have received thus far, and with my co-workers. @Minion-Queen, @art_of_shred, @Mike-Davis, @Mike-Ralston, @jenuinecase, and @scottalanmiller have blessed me with an awesome work environment and support. And while I expect that I will be a little less available, I will be working from Ison's bed side over the coming days to support him as I have the two weeks he was at home with me prior to our trip to the hospital... We have the best guess that this started out as Strep - which was his third bout with it - and stressed his system in such a manner that we are where we are today.

      I suppose is time to finish gathering things up to head back to the hospital. I returned home (first since 4pm Thursday) to retrieve the Loaner from @Minion-Queen (Surface for ease) and some other items needed for our stay... Which we hope (pray) that we will be home before Christmas...

      Going into the U.S.A. Holiday of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for much... Thankful for NTG and it's staff, Family - both far and near, but most of all, I am thankful for the staff at UK Hospital who are caring for my son.

    • Time for change?

      Well - I suppose it's time to fess up. A few might know this,.. but likely not many...

      It is with sadness and regret that as of 03 August 2018 I will no longer work full time for NTG.

      I started 06 April 2015, and in this short time have worked with some great people and learn a good bit. I like to think of myself as previously thinking and working outside the proverbial box, and while I still believe that, I have come to do more outside of that box - things I previously would not have had the chance or the skills to do so.

      While curious moving to Linux - I was against it,.. pushed by the 'Corporate World' and the main stream system. But now three of the four systems I run are Linux only, the fourth being dual boot with Windows - mainly to play one or two games. I work easier in SSH and via command line on both OS platforms than previously.

      While my official time is coming to a close, I am still making an effort to continue to work with the NTG family; @scottalanmiller, @Dominica, @pchiodo, and the rest of the great staff.

      Kentucky lawmaker wants telemarketers to list true caller ID

      FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - One Kentucky lawmaker wants to make certain telemarketing practices, including disguising caller ID numbers, to become illegal.

      House Majority Whip Kevin Bratcher, R - Louisville, has pre-filed a bill for the 2019 Legislative Session which would require telemarketers to list their true caller ID number or have it listed as unknown.

      This should be at the Federal level, and the fines higher...

      I've recently noticed some 'trash' user profiles on some computers. Sadly I don't have one to reference - but generally acts like it is the first signon, and creates multiples of the same profile incrementing in number. I'll see if I can't find a machine tomorrow with one - sure it won't be difficult to find one.

      Here some some results that may help:

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/disk-drive-stuck-in-read-only-state-despite/33aaaad5-75ee-4e6c-b5bc-3b5f816d99ba

      One suggestion is the Samsung tool: "Please check your drive using Samsung Magician too"

      SSD 970 EVO PLUS in read-only and shop wants me to send it - what would you recommend

      Suggests saving what you can and move on.

      M.2 NVMe Boot SSD locked in Read-Only

      If you can read it, you can recover data and move on,.. Check warranty of the drive, but depending on what is on it,.. do you (risk)warranty replacing it? I generally always get a new drive and retain the old drives, make copies and pull the drive apart (platters and magnets) and anything solid state gets the hammer fire treatment. My bench is a black hole to drives or any type of storage.

    • Export Drivers: Linux

      Planning ahead for the inevitable day when the computer crashes on me when out in the field and I have to rebuild it.

      Found how to export drivers on Windows, using [cmd] or [powershell].

      So that is half of the battle.. but sometimes I will need to do the same for Linux. Yes,.. many drivers are already built into the native Linux system,.. but there are some odd cases where it is likely they are not the 'right one needed'.

      And while I am looking, this is so I can come back later and find what I did to solve the matter.

      Getting the owner and other information about a domain

      Looks like I need to gather information on a domain - who owns it,. registered through, and expiry date.

      It's been a while since I have had to do anything like this. Tried whois and didn't seem to be getting any real information about it. I think the register is GoDaddy.. but would like to confirm so I can take the information to the club board. They have 'had enough' of the lack of response and such from the 'current' admin (pfft,.. if that is what you'd call his total dis-interest and lack of doing anything).

      While nothing wrong perse with how its done,.. he 'pays' his yearly dues with the registration costs.. and then uses Google Sites (sigh) for the hosting. ;

      No one can figure it out, I tried and gave up. just want to move it to a true host, using a true CMS that is understandable.

      tnx

      I found that the name has changed to UniGetUI recently. I've been using it recently since it does all the Windows repositories I know about.

      I seem to remember WingetUI,.. But This is a case of a fresh install of Win10 not having the 'updated MS Store' that even has the native Microsoft Winget.

      I will however take a look at UniGetUI.. My goal maybe was simply just staying out of the MS Store,.. and using CLI like chocolatey, apt-get and the similar...
