Our go-to solution for VSS problems is to set up a dedicated snapshot volume. Otherwise we were getting timeouts and M$ does ugly things that don't make sense when VSS doesn't work properly.

Don't be afraid to repost. Hell I've done it before. I just want all the things cross linked whenever possible. Makes it easier to find details in 6 months.

In this case I even mis-remembered where the fuck I read about it. Thanks @dbeato.

Total DB Admin noob here - so bare with me.

Does this include the username/password setup for this DB? or does that need to be maintained separately?

i.e. you have to rebuild from this backup - do you just create a brand new SQL user and grant them rights to this DB upon import, then use that new account to give access to the app?

In typing out my question I kinda assume the answer is the second bit - you just create a new user and assign them rights.

Correct. The user and the database are separate things.

This is a good reason to have more than one credit card from more than one bank.

This isn't just a credit issue though. It's people literally unable to access their own money, not money on credit. More so if people have the money in their checking/savings account to pay their bills why should they have to pay their bills on credit?!

The bank had better pay off any interest if their customers had to use a credit card to pay for anything during this time to get things back to Zero.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

When we start looking, we'll start with the usual culprits like Veeam. ShadowProtect comes highly recommended to me by several folks (Including the guy who just built the ReadyNAS)... We'd hit the other major players as well.

So cost is going to bite you in the ass, since you said there were concerns about licensing. But they are all valid options.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

Good Backup Compression / Deduplication is a must. We have ~30TB of systems and data.

You can perform the compression on your storage layer or use dedup or both. This may affect the overall performance though.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

We don't care if it's full install, agent based, or Hypervisor based. It just needs to work.

Based on this I would think Agent based would be a decent option. But didn't you say you have something along the lines of 300 VMs? Might become tedious.

Yeah, we'd likely do the dedupe at the Storage layer. Our Current Nimble devices do this relatively well with our live data. Something like 1.3 or 1.4 to 1 compression is what i remember. It may be more or less.

If we went Agent based, we can push the agents via PDQ Deploy for Windows and a shell script or something for Linux. (Most of our Production Linux systems are SLES 12)... If reboots are required, systems can be rebooted during our patch window... (5-7am every day).

Can I ask why you are protecting user devices though? Generally these have very little on them and through simple policy can everything be saved on your servers or cloud and thus don't need backup.

I would really like to do this. We have onedrive available for all of our users and I was thinking of coming up with some sort of system that just uses their onedrive as the primary source of their homefolder.

That's how I do it but we are using Nextcloud.

All users root folders under their user profile is linked to the actual folders in C:\Users\john.doe\Nextcloud{Desktop, Documents, etc...}. And the data is synced back to the Nextcloud server and that server is backed up.

How do you go about doing that? Editing the location of Desktop, Documents, etc... ?

Use Junction Points. Its like using symbolic links in Linux.

      Oh... Duh, lol. Thanks.

I'm just trying to figure out how that would work if you have to do more than a few client machines at a time.

Something like this. It is not ready for prime time, but was my starting point last week when setting up a new desktop.

$User = Read-Host "Enter UserName" Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Desktop" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Desktop" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Desktop" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Documents" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Documents" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Documents" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Downloads" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Downloads" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Downloads" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Favorites" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Favorites" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Favorites" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Music" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Music" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Music" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Pictures" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Pictures" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Pictures" -Force Remove-Item -Path "C:\Users\$User\Videos" New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\$User" -Name "Videos" -Target "C:\Users\$User\Nextcloud\Videos" -Force

where would this be run from, the DC?

This would have to be run from the End-user's computer from the looks of it.

You are trying to screw with the end user's folders. they have to exist, and you have to have rights to them. neither of which are true of an admin account.

Are you automating this -- then How?

If you're not automating it, then why not just manually add the folders to the NextCloud client?

      /sigh FFS...

@JaredBusch said in Crashplan vs Backblaze in 2018:

Something like this. It is not ready for prime time, but was my starting point last week when setting up a new desktop.

lol. I thought you were talking about the code...

Time to research a way to do that.

at this point, I would have to get management buy in to really consider cloud, I want to evaluate the options before hand to know how much I should or shouldn't be pushing for the cloud. Recent conversations with @scottalanmiller have me questioning our historical reasons and motivations for why we use what we use. In my case, we have a mix of prior misinformed speculation and my limited personal experience.

I don't see a reason to emulate tape if I'm not going to use tape, but I really don't know

Well if you use tape, then no reason to emulate.

@gjacobse We have a tower beside our house that is isolated from the house to prevent a dual-ground situation.

All cables that run into the house are completely isolated to prevent anything jumping in.

We had a client in Edmonton that had a fax modem and a fax service running on a PC. When we set it up the POTS line was grounded prior to running into the PC. Somewhere along the way something was moved around and the POTS line in from the wall got plugged in to the PC modem directly.

An active storm had a strike against the pole in the alley and sure enough besides the boom scaring the carp out of folks the PC was dead. When we opened it up the controller chip on the modem was literally blown out as was the chipset chip under the heatsink. Time for a new PC!
