This was my question - I'm guessing it's possibly seen as attempting to steal viewers, but as I mentioned it really won't steal viewers since they are watchable easily at different times.
This isn't anything like the Stargate SG1 vs Firefly debacle (which Fox lost on tremendously, which is to bad because Firefly had the potential to be a huge show)

I was a die hard SG1 fan - I wasn't going to not watch a show I loved to try a new show that was on at the same time (stupid Fox), which is, I'm sure, why it failed.
Firefly was so popular it spun to a theatrical movie - While it's short stink on TV might have spurred some additional appreciation it might not otherwise have gained, I'm willing to bet it would have made at least 3 seasons on Fox had they not put it in the same time slot as SG1
