Definitely seen that a lot, it's weird.

I've completely missed this on Facebook somehow.

Oh it is huge. I've seen it from a lot of different people... mostly those that earn only a little more than $15/hr and/or military. I've also seen military people mocking those people for not understanding how pay works in the private world.

I've seen the low wage workers arguing this. I have also seen high wage and business owners making the same argument. Everyone I know in the military, except for that one RWNJ who joined just to shoot people, is for a wage increase.

This is so incredibly unlikely as to not be worth even discussing.

Normal people who turn on ad blockers will never turn them off, unless that's the only way to get the content. Those who troll around these parts are the rare few that might find real value in disabling them to provide funds back to the sites we visit.

Maybe, but that's not the point. The point was they block people who block ad blockers, it's not about the ads.

Phew! Wow, I just spent quite some time reading through almost every comment in this thread.
Fast forward to now, it seems like most issues were addressed.

Worth mentioning that we have been using VitalPBX in single and multi-tenant mode since I think early 2019 and have struggled with a ton of issues, but we are glad to see the progress they have made.

This was a good throwback ride!

Yeah, we use it heavily too.

Since that was the same OP, I'm guessing that that is not the issue with this one.

I would hope so, but we're all human and the issue seems very similar. I think he had another one where it was something about 2 instances of the server app like I mentioned in an earlier post but I couldn't find that one.

Makes me glad that I'm not doing 1st level support anymore 🙂 And even then, our 1st level guys have more discretion than this, both our internal IT team and the (currently) small team for external support.

Can we get a photo of the checklist with ur info scratched out?

That way we have what you have to go off of, and no more assumptions need to be made.

We need the complete context to give accurate recommendations.

I will have to get it from my boss. My boss only verbally told me about this and then sent me a snippet of the suggested solution which I transcribed and posted here.
      0_1513983858592_23108526-83c5-4a26-8608-ae5b8e840eea-image.png

      I see.

But we can't really use that.

We need to see the actual requirement, and for all we know that is just one of many possible recommendations for complying with some unknown requirements.

Right. I just provided that because that's what my boss provided me as it related to the auditors in that it is one of the solutions they provide on the matter -- a solution which I had completely un-done when I had enough of dealing with static IPs and rolled out DHCP again.

This comparison misses taking it beyond year 5.

Why take it beyond 5 years? Because if it is on premises, it will need to be upgraded again.

@Dashrender said in Email server options:

If you add SA to the original licenses - because you know the plan is the keep using Exchange going forward - it will raise the costs noticeably in the beginning, but come renewal time it will make it significantly less. Less enough to be under O365? not likely, hell, even the 5 year plan would be more expensive for onprem vs O365... but it might lower itself over time because of the SA difference.

SA is a scam to get more money. Always has been for the SMB. With negotiated pricing for Enterprise, it is the right thing.

If you're a company that only upgrades once every 10 years - then yeah... SA is a waste of money, but you're already talking about upgrading again in 5 years, so SA could very much make financial sense - show me the numbers before you poo poo it.

Modern RAID controllers have the horsepower and cache RAM that is flash backed to overcome any real parity performance costs.

Operationally it would be just fine. It's only recovery time that would be of concern.

I really wonder what a broadcast domain looks like Pertino/Zero Tier/Himachi?

Depends on what kind of broadcasts. If you mean Ethernet broadcasts, which is what most people mean (the ones that are limited by VLANs) then these VPNs don't affect them at all.

So an ethernet broadcast storm could bring it down?

Ethernet broadcast storm can take down anything that is using Ethernet. What you are doing on top of Ethernet is irrelevant. But what do YOU mean by "bring it down?"

@pete-s said in KVM or VMWare:

It isn't the ability to automate that is the problem. It's the availablility of easy to use tools that is the problem.

Thats the whole point I'm making.

KVM is hard to automate. Not that it's impossible, but the tooling doesn't exist to where you can easily automate like with VMware.

Agreed, and I don't think that that's the point of concern here. The issue at hand should be "does that automation that VMware offers get used by or should be used by the OP?" I believe that the answer is no to being used today and likely no to should it be used. It's a very small deployment. The overhead to the automation, even when you have VMware, is too high. And regardless, even if we agree that it should be used, probably because an MSP/ITSP is brought in to effectively make the environment larger and changing some of the scale discussions, the bigger question would be "will the OP's environment opt to do that anyway?" If that answer is "no", in the practical sense, then the automation point becomes moot.

I "think" we can all agree that VMware has better standard built in automation. And that KVM is completely automatable if you put in the extra, non-standard effort. So if we were considering standard automation then VMware would have an important edge in that area. That point shouldn't be in dispute. We can argue how close KVM gets, while still being behind, sure.

But the key point here, for me, is that I believe based on knowing the environment a bit that that automation is not, and won't be, used if VMware remains.

And... you'd need a database to track the databases!

Actually, as I think about it, separating databases really just becomes semantics. As long as it is a single application, separating the databases adds overhead (mostly for the developers) but in reality, it is always still all one datastore. One way or another, the application has to behave essentially the same no matter which way you do it.

The one advantage to having them separate is that you can have different "versions" for different customers. But I'm not sure that that is a good thing.

An entire risk that exists only for closed source.

I hope on of the products is Microsoft Teams so they can fix the glaring functional issues with it...

Is Teams really a product though? I think of it more as a service... I mean I know they have clients for desktop and mobile... but the web version definitely feels more like a service.

I did a 2-day conference over Teams last week. It actually went very well.

It has improved a lot. It's still trails other solutions, but what from MS doesn't. It's at least starting to catch up with the level of behind that most of the rest of the MS ecosystem is.
