What about DAC? isn't that still a factor with any parity RAID?

Yes it is. However, it is suspected that much of DAC is a second order consequence of URE. And also a lot of DAC is believed to come from drive vibration. Both things are fixed with SSD. So it is believed that the likelihood of DAC is lower.

I'm lucky I'm past all of that. I've been telling them for a year that we need to replace all of the XP machines (40+) and they have approved it... so the purchasing has been happening with some help from Danielle.

Awesome, good to know that NTG is able to help out!

First time I took it I was ESFP. Second time it was ENFP.

      ENFP. Extraversion - 77%, Intuition - 14%, Feeling - 72%, Prospecting - 24%.

Not sure what changed but I actually feel that round two was a little more accurate although at only 14% for N it could probably swing either way...

Haven't used BSD since my days at Data General. DG/UX was a hybrid, BSD for the file system (faster and more robust), networking used streams from ATT Sys V. I have now dated myself.

      my point exactly! 🙂

Not really what companies using recruiters like that want. It's mostly a myth that people want to hire great talent. Most places want to hire cool sounding, middling talent.

I'm actually looking forward to this LTS as a possible every day desktop for myself. I've never been fully on board with taking the plunge, but the increasing irrelevance of the underlying OS is making using a stable and secure platform that much more attractive to me.

I don't understand what's going on with Dynamics. The transition from Dynamics CRM to the new Dynamics 365 seems to be more than just a re-branding exercise, it feels like an entirely new product. Or rather two products, as Microsoft has been its usual annoying self and decided "why offer one product when we can confuse users by offering two?". So there's Dynamics 365 for Enterprise and Dynamics 365 for Business. Where "Enterprise" is defined, somewhat arbitrarily, as a company with 250+ users.

Worst still, Dynamics 365 for Business isn't even available in Europe yet, and yet neither is the old Dynamics CRM, leaving SMBs seemingly in limbo.

If anyone understands what's going on and can explain it to me, I'd be very grateful, as the concept of Dynamics 365 is pretty appealing.

@JaredBusch that Windows license thing is a huge deal. Everyone always blows it off with a "SMBs only run Windows" but that's so not true, especially in this day and age with virtualization. And any technical MSP knows to use the right tool for the right job. Sure 99% of SMBs run Windows but 100% of SMBs don't want to waste money for no reason. Running Windows doesn't mean you have spare, otherwise useless licenses sitting around. The cost of SW is actually quite high when you consider the licensing headaches. And since you either need a VDI license, a server license or to run it on a physical desktop it is far more costly than people really admit.

Running SW "right" means a Server 2012 R2 license virtualized with some serious disk subsystem to keep it running smoothly. That's far from trivial if you are an SMB. That's more cost than many put into their entire IT infrastructure!

Never followed up on this, whoops. We ended up using VyOS for a few years. But the hardware died on us and was too complex to service. It made no sense as it was cheaper to replace with new Ubiquiti hardware than it was to maintain what we already had. So we ended up going with a UBNT ERL and it has been great.

Out of curiosity, is it the one running the NTG lab?

I'm just assuming that you only have it doing routing and that it can do the basics at full line speed.

Yes, that is what is currently running there. We don't do QoS filtering in the lab, so it handles the speeds just fine.

ERL can do near line speed as long as you don’t do something to hit the CPU.
