I need a series of "how I hear it" marketing interpretations but here is one that I like:

Marketing: 9 out of 10 dentists recommend toothpaste X.

What I Hear: Likely 90% of dentists say it doesn't matter what you use as long as you use something, 10% say definitely don't use toothpaste X.

Saw this today and thought of this thread...

From a perspective of stateless, it is relatively trivial, and often actually trivial, to reproduce or recreate any aspect of an IT infrastructure as long as the storage is still intact. In many modern cloud architectures we can actually rebuild an entire network in a matter of minutes without needing to go to backups or to even take backups. Data storage is unique as the only component of many modern network designs that even has a reason to have backups taken of it!

I think that was basically my point. My key advice would be to trust no-one and recognise there is no such thing as a free lunch. I am surprised by the naivety of some of my colleagues, and how much they trust the advise of salesmen.

It's good to trust no one, but everyone needs advice as well. Remember these factors apply equally to the business listening to an IT department as it does to outside companies. So unless we understand bias, we can't understand recommendations and do our best to limit bias and to understand its skew.

They are a part of IT, and they quite often go of track or in the wrong direction.

I rant that over in my mind, and it seemed that if the reboot failed, you would not get any type of email.

If the reboot failed to run completely (like the system was down, cron had crashed, things were frozen) you would get no email either. You are making the system report on itself with is not good.

That's why the system should reboot itself (no way around that) but the monitoring of whether it is up or not should be done externally.

they have a flip phone, so SMS isn't an option, but those people are so few that it doesn't affect the masses.

Huh? Every flip phone and service I've had in the 90s and early 2000s had SMS texting.

That was definitely not my experience. I've had cell service continuously since 1992 and did not get access to texting until more like 2002 and never sent or received a text until I would guess after 2006. But I had email on my phone before that and talked with loads of people because it was common in business then, because of Blackberry devices, to have email on the phones. ANd because texting was costly and rarely available, they had Blackberry messenger instead of texting on the devices. We didn't use it, but it was there.

Not my own experience. Texting was big for me and my circle back then, regardless of your experience. Besides the point though... Being a flip phone had nothing to do with SMS.

It seems to happen with most expensive laptops. They just aren't worth it.better to keep desktops for performance and laptops for mobility.

I owe you an I told you so. Ditching the ASUS too and back on my workstation. Ordered a new motherboard and GTX 980. Going to pick up a weaker laptop.

Turns out that even on the highest end gaming laptops money can buy ( that aren't $4,000+ w/ SLI and 3 minutes battery life ) you can't develop for Oculus, which is my next little adventure.

Sidenote: God it's good to be back on a desktop

XenServer supports SD Card installs. Not sure about Xen

XS is just a packaging of Xen. So anything XS supports, Xen has to have supported. Xen is completely flexible and can be used anyway that you want, it itself doesn't have the same concept of "supported" like XS does.

I thought I read some where that Microsoft is making the jump from 6.4 to 10, which will be the first time the os and kernel match. I could be wrong though.

Linux did a renumbering too, recently, to make the number more marketable. But 3.0 is actually part of the 2.6 family. At best you could consider it 2.8. Microsoft may do the same thing, switch from a meaningful numbering to a marketing number. But the new kernel is remaining part of the Vista kernel family.

Same reason that large companies create employee IDs that are unique and don't mean anything. Just no way to have the users' names be the ID no matter how to mash it up. There just has to be an ID field that is unique and separate from other data.

Agreed. As I said, it's a management fail. People try to step outside their role and then get lost and confused and just $@#% stuff up.
