Getting ready to throw Mint Cinnamon onto a laptop although Pop OS seems to be the new belle of the ball nowadays.

Pop_OS doesn't make their own desktop like Mint does. Mint's focus is making an alternative desktop environment and Mint is just the showcase OS for it. Pop_OS! is a tweaking to Ubuntu used as the default on custom hardware.

Cinnamon is far and away my preferred DE. I just wish that other distro's / spins would integrate it as tightly with the underlying OS as Mint does. The add/remove (install/uninstall) integration right into the main menu is convenient. I just have an extreme dislike for their policy of staying on LTS / Stable packages and package base.

Fedora's Cinnamon spin is pretty much as integrated as Mint.

They are pretty much all integrated once installed. Many DEs have a software manager / software center gui now that is shortcutted.

Yeah, pretty much all DE have that now.

I don't use the desktop for shortcuts even on Windows. I don't see why it's needed. It's just a clutter space, it's so much easier to have the shortcuts on the task bar, or start menu... Windows Key + Search works great on Windows and Linux GUI

I honestly like using it as a scratch space for temp files. That said... ChromeOS doesn't have temp files in that way, so even my purpose for it goes away.

yeah, that's true. Since editing a doc is in a webspace - you don't have the choice to really save the file/data to the desktop as a scratch pad... so you just have to save it into the cloud - it forces better behavior.

      Right, exactly.

      Looks like I have KDE.

I did not actually pick one. I simply clicked download, so I randomly got KDE.

      Now to switch to Cinnamon.

Oh. I respect the KDE team a lot but I've not been comfortable with their desktop post version 3. It's solid and loaded with features but the Plasma stuff is weird and not intuitive. If you go "power user" on it I'm sure it's great. But for me, I left it as I'm a more casual style desktop user and it just didn't fit with me.

I think that they decided that the market was full and that they needed to really innovate to be relevant, which they did. It's interesting and someday I hope to have time to dig into it more.

Ya I don't see the use of the plasma workspaces. I use the traditional workspaces a ton in Gnome 3, but I don't see the value to what plasma does with them. I tried having a separate "business" vs "personal" workspace a while ago and just couldn't wrap my head around the use case.

Same here. The old style desktops I used and liked. Plasma I just can't figure out.

I'm not going to knock the article, cause I do agree, Linux Distros are constantly becoming better, and software developers are realizing they can still make a dime by developing their software so it works on Linux.

My issue is in the work-space and stupid black box appliances that require archaic software to operate that keeps me tethered to Windows.

If I could rip those solutions out, I'd be using CentOS as my daily office driver.

Blue mics are the way to go. Snowball, Yeti, whichever one you can afford, but go w/ Blue. They used to be all hand made in Latvia by artisans who used to work for Neumann (noi-man, say it right). The USB ones are Chinese made, but the designs are the tits. I have a snowball and 2x Yetis, all awesome.

FFS, no Samson, no Plantronics, no Logitech if you are actually seeking a real microphone. If budget rules, then I no longer give a f@ck what you use, and you obviously hate good sound (snowball mic is like $50).

edit: skip the Blue "ice" snowball... get the real one, $69.99 https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Snowball-Microphone-Textured-White/dp/B000EOPQ7E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1488490633&sr=8-3&keywords=blue+snowball+mic

I've had a low success rate with startech devices. They are cheap and when they work they work ok... but most of the time they don't. Even if one had been working fine come in the next day and it doesn't work at all.

Exactly my experience, but I will add that the more complicated the product is the lower it's chances of working properly. It's a sliding scale from "meh, yeah, ok" to "possessed by demons" to "complete and utter failure to chooch"

At a former job we bought a serial to USB from them for a PLC once... never again. It did funky things and inserted random characters into programs. We returned it for a replacement... the second one didn't work at all.

Oh sweet jesus those are the exception. NEVER buy one unless it's straight from these guys. Trust me, I spent years doing electronics engineering programming chips and bit banging

      http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBTTLSerial.htm

Yea,.. there is a lot of fakers that just won't work on those FTI drivers... ugh.

The driver has a verification software in the download you can check the chip with though.. in Windows 7 the fake ones would still work I believe.

Until FTDI decide to block them again heheh

Turns out that even on the highest end gaming laptops money can buy ( that aren't $4,000+ w/ SLI and 3 minutes battery life ) you can't develop for Oculus, which is my next little adventure.
