    • RE: What are your thoughts about HP Instant Ink?

      @david.wiese said:

@IRJ my dads inkjet was just ruined by using a third party cartridge in his HP printer. All it takes is 1 time and you have your justification to not using 3rd party cartridges.

Why would that justify not using it? If, on average, you save money using it (even including the cost of replacing the printer) why spend more money to get less? Yes, third party ink ruins printers more often than OEM ink, this is accepted. The point that IRJ and I were making is that it does this infrequently enough that you still save money because it is cheaper to replace the printers (normally) than it is to use the OEM ink. That it ruins printers from time to time is a given, that it does that is part of the equation is showing that third party ink normally makes good business sense.

If you need a camera, that is going to limit you to more advanced devices like an Android tablet, iPad or maybe something like a Chromebook. Cheaper devices, like a Kindle, would be rules out.

That would be awesome, I would love having that! Especially if they do the Quake style automatic drop down as an option. Love terminals like that.

Great, more SSL / TLS issues. I'm surprised that this is not getting more press than it is.

He's trolling. I've spent half an hour trying to work with him. He's just messing with us. I've explained the issues and he is just being ridiculous. This is some proprietary Linux garbage on some hobby system. There is no way for us to help him and he absolutely refuses to listen or let us help him in any way.

    • New Dock Lets Windows 10 Phone Be a Desktop

A new docking unit from Microsoft allows a Windows 10 phone be used as a desktop PC. This seems odd, to me, since Microsoft has been supporting the Windows Phone so poorly as of late with their software going to iOS and Android so much earlier. It is a neat idea and I could see this really taking off, especially for casual home users who just don't want to own a computer anymore.

that Y im saying i dont know how to use linux

See, this is what I mean? I explained over and over that Linux wasn't a thing and that his issues have nothing to do with Linux. He knows not to say this, but repeats it over and over anyway.

No matter how many times I explained that what he has is nothing like any normal Linux and none of the config files are there because it is completely proprietary he refuses to tell me what device he has, what OS he is running, how he acquired it and just demands, over and over, to be told the "standard way to do this in Linux."

For thirty minutes I've explained that there is no "standard way to do anything" and that he cant keep asking that. Yet, there he does it again.

The system is proprietary, knowing Linux has nothing to do with it.

    • Is Linux the new DOS

Remember when everyone used to call any command line "DOS". People used "DOS commands" on Windows XP. People called just anything DOS if they had to type a command. Now are people doing the same thing with Linux? I see people refer to having to "know Linux" to do things like work on VMware. People call BSD Linux too.

So, has Linux become the latest DOS as the term misapplied to any command line? Do people see the Windows command line and refer to it as "knowing Linux?" Or is that still called DOS? What about DOS itself, do they think that that is Linux now?

All humor aside, I am all for the state to do this though.

Me too, I would love to see WV do something like this. Both because it would likely be great for them and because it would serve as a model and a wake up call for other states.

I found that desktop ie)xfce4 Desktop Environment.

That is not a theme. That is a completely different desktop environment. That is quite different from a theme. A theme is just a graphical change. But XFCE changes how everything works, it is very similar to moving to a different operating system. With Ubuntu, while you can install XFCE manually, there is an Ubuntu build called Xubuntu that is an entire operating system built around Ubuntu as a base and XFCE.

Also, it is a mouse, not a rat, if that matters.

    • RE: AMD, trying to mount a comeback.

Any competition will be good. The RISC space has solid competition with at least Oracle and IBM always keeping each other in check (and that's if you ignore ARM.) AMD was left without competition for years and look what happened. Now Intel has been, will be interesting to see if AMD is able to put some serious pressure on Intel and drive the market forward again.

    • US DHS Automated Indicator Sharing

      https://www.us-cert.gov/ais

This looks pretty interesting. The US Department of Homeland Security wants companies to install a threat collection system on their networks and share data back out to the DHS which, in turn, shares the data back out to everyone in the system.
