    • RE: File Server Upgrade Options

@larsen161 said in File Server Upgrade Options:

      Current Setup
Mac Pro (mid 2012) running macOS 10.12.5, 24GB, 2x 2.4GHz Xeon (no comments needed, we're moving forward)
      A DS316JS with 2 equal sets of RAID5 in a 8 x 6TB config (same as above)
Connected via a Areca ARC-1883x RAID Card
Networked with a 6 port 1 Gbps NIC
      Backed up to Backblaze ($5/mo)

      Goals
Run a 'proper' storage server OS
Migrate to more reliable RAID configuration
Upgrade storage capacity (expect to run out in March 2018)

FreeBSD, RAIDZ2 single array. With combined arrays you'd be faster than the single, with RAID 6 you'll have more protection that the two RAID 5s. Capacity will be the same. Or buy a few more drives and go to RAIDZ3 right away.

Agree, SuperMicro for the win. Avoid gimmicky Pod-like devices.

I guess I'm early and get to kick things off. The Linux VSA on KVM, is there some recommendations around underlying filesystems, tuning guides, performance info? Anything like that yet?

    • RHEL 7 Comes with a Big of a Jolt

Infoworld today reports on the Jarring Impact of RHEL 7 on some environments.

Really, systemd is the biggest, I think. New filesystem as a default but that is incredibly minor and can be changed with almost no effort. Mostly a hyped up article to get people to check it out. But they do talk about some of the new features.

So two nodes is the small end for a hyperconverged appliance (or one that you build yourself with hypervisor + Starwind VSAN), I think I'm clear there. But what about upper limits? A lot of hyperconverged appliances cap out around ten or twelve nodes in a single cluster. What are the limites from the Starwind side if I'm building Hyper-V or VMware clusters? Is it the same and a Starwind limitation? Do I just get to go to the limit of the hypervisor?

    • 1001 Reasons Not to Be an MSP

In another thread the idea of a book on "1001 Reasons Not to Be an MSP" came up. And I thought "what a great idea for a thread". We should collect reasons why starting an MSP is not a good idea or reasons to be wary of starting one.

In an apparent bid to compete with OneDrive for Business which is the same capacity at a similar price (but bundled in with other Office 365 plans) Dropbox is now offering 1TB of Cloud Storage for just $10.

Hopefully this is not a report. Did not see anyone else posting this today.

The overhead of tech management is often unseen, unappreciated and miscalculated.

The cost of a tech working somewhere is much higher than the tech's salary. People often forget this.

Sounds like a pretty interesting idea to me. I could see it being really interesting to look back and see what you have done and when. I use that feature in Foursquare sometimes and it is really interesting and that is a lot more limited.
