    • RE: Powershell Eject of USB Works how could I remount it without reconnecting the device

Okay so I've ended up going a different way with this, but I believe the results are the same.

This will disable the PNP device, based on the InstanceID

      Disable-PnpDevice -InstanceID 'USB\VID_1B1C&PID_1A06\AA1TD4DI0B5WBKJG' -A

and this will enable the PNP Device

      Enable-PnpDevice -InstanceID 'USB\VID_1B1C&PID_1A06\AA1TD4DI0B5WBKJG' -A

      Also based on the InstanceID

While this isn't perfect (I need to know the instance ID of each USB device) it does make it simple to pull this detail from each device and build 1 or 2 scripts to do everything.

      @WrCombs Thanks it's been a long move.

I was going to make the joke :: He's Alive ::

      but decided against it.

      fun stuff though, new office?

Fun for those who didn't have to move, setup or plan for any of it, certainly. For me, it was just a lot of overtime.

      • been repeatedly told to use said system

      • they continually take things without accounting for them

So yea, I may just slap an idiot today.

    • ASUS RoG G752 - Review

So this is gonna be a down and dirty review of the Asus RoG G752VY. I've had this laptop for a little over 4 days now, and it is a complete beast in terms of raw power.

      Drive Performance
The M.2 PCIe 256Gb SSD is blazing fast. Things load up far faster than on a conventional SSD.
The 1TB Winchester, is clearly here just for data storage, useful sure, but this laptop (if i could call it that) is clearly for gaming. A larger PCIe SSD would've been better.

      Graphics
With the 980M, I've been able to play Warframe on the stock settings (at 1920x1080) resolution and get a constant 75+ FPS. The screen being a 17.3 inches certainly helps with gaming as well, seeing as no one wants to game on a 12" display...

      Monitor
The built in display is huge, larger than I had thought it would be, but that works for me, I want a big display in order to play on, as said above a small screen for gaming just isn't fun. Especially if you have to hunch over to see it.

      Audio
Here is where I have some complaints. The speakers are behind the bottom edge of the laptop display, not just above the keyboard. Which makes for an awful lot of Echo, which if you want to not wear a headset to talk to people will make it difficult to understand what they are saying.

      Weight
At 9.5 lbs this isn't a portable laptop, it's pretty heavy, but you get what you pay for with the performance of the laptop over all. I use it on my couch and have no issues with it on my lap, but I certainly wouldn't want to lug around this beast for long trips.

I'm happy to have another article but there are a few points that are clearly wrong, and I'm only at "Hyper-V" within the article.

Its free edition is only available for Windows VMs and that too without GUI.

All editions of Hyper-V are free, only if you choose to Install Windows Server # and enable the Hyper-V role are you forced to purchase a license. And even here, Hyper-V is free, it's Windows Dom0 that you're paying for in this case.

This approach is generally looked down upon when deploying as well as it causes licensing complications especially if you have any DR plans.

    • XenServer 2-Node HA Smack in the face to our MSP

So the goal is/was to configure a Highly Availability virtual server infrastructure. After getting a quote from our MSP, who wanted $45K USD for an Inverted Pyramid of Doom I decided to call them out on their bullshit in a private meeting with the boss, and his boss as well.

This is before their labor to implement the system they had proposed. That easily would have put us in the $60K range for this project.

So after meeting I was told to build a better, more reliable, and cheaper solution. I did just this. Saving the company ~$44K upfront.

I designed a 2-Node (servers) High Availability setup running XenServer 6.5 and HALizard (HAL) which uses the DRBD back end for true high availability.

The servers are Dell R730's (eight bay) fully loaded with LFF 4TB Dell OEM drives, ordered from xByte for just over $16K total.

After having two dedicated straight-through cables run between my closets for a few hundred dollars for the DRBD bond, I was all set to begin the installation.

I've installed XenServer several times, and every time it's as easy as you could image an XP installation. I grabbed four 16GB USB drives, these are the installation target (and clone target), and a copy of the installation ISO on a DVD drive.

Booting from the CD, I ran the installation, selecting only the target source from where XenServer would run. Which is the 16GB USB drive as displayed during the installation. Making sure to not select any VM storage as this would interfere (break) HAL functionality.

Repeat for the second server. Following the HAL guide, I updated both servers, created the network Bond and used the HAL NoSAN installer on each server.

The NoSAN installer takes you through the entire process, step by step. Select the Primary and Secondary, Select the Bond, select the medium(RAID10 Array on each system) to use for the DRBD/iSCSI target. And lastly create the storage via XenCenter.

Since the network is a closed loop, I was able to use the default settings of the installer, 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2 for the Bond.

At this point in the system, you'll be waiting for a while, because the system has to sync, and DRBD has no way of knowing that the target is empty (not matching the Primary server).

So the servers sync, and sync and sync. Until finally, they are uniform and UpTodate.

"iscsi-cfg status" is the command to check the status of DRBD.
      0_1467043023746_putty_2016-06-27_08-27-11.png

During the sync you can enable the High Availability functionality, though the system will be slow, due to the sync process that is occurring.

"ha-cfg status" it'll say, "DISABLED, type yes to enable" > Yes and Enter.

There we go, two node HA using XenServer and HALizard.

With KVM, the cons while not untrue aren't entirely accurate.

For your VM backup options every solution that exist like Veeam or any other agent based solution, including open source ones like UrBackup are available to use.

Yes the skills required to use KVM on a production level is different, but it is no different than managing any other Hypervisor. You wouldn't have a day 1 Intern manage your server fleet, period.

Training and familiarity of the tools are required for any hypervisor.
