    • Self Hosted FTP

OK so here's a question for the community.

We currently are renting an FTP service from Maytech. It works well, but is EXPENSIVE....

It's on 20GB (so is really tiny).

It has a few critical features though.

Password less logon (for clients or vendors etc) and custom sites for different clients.

So we could have our top level "Owners" and then Client1 Client2 Client3 all with distinct FTP pages (and custom logon information for each site)

Are there any linux distributions that can mimic this setup and feature set? Easily, and with Minimal setup.

Looking for expiration, quota limits, and specifically (critical) custom sub-FTP-sites that can be assigned to a client, which must be able to be managed from the root account.

    • Wednesday - Dinosaur BBQ Lunch Plans

So from the topic @Minion-Queen posted about places to get a drink in Rochester, she mentioned Dinosaur BBQ. Obviously a BBQ place is going to have beverages, but they also have some amazing food.

If we wanted to all go for lunch, it would be a self-pay option. You can find the website here restaurant menu here and beer menu here. those are PDF's.

Based on the number of people coming to MangoCon we'll likely need to make reservations in advance, so if you want some BBQ (or beer) for lunch on that Wednesday please message me saying so.

Currently the planned lunch time would be 1PM on Wednesday 14th.

      Thanks in advance!

    • Home Lab - Odd Issue

At my home lab I'm running XenServer 6.5 (well I was running). I shutdown the server, and moved it to a rack that I purchased off of Craigslist. The system shutdown without any reported issues.

I disconnect the cords, lift the server, place it on the shelf on my rack, and reconnected everything.

I went to power it up, and it starts a system check of the OS Thumb drive. It finds a crap ton of errors, and I just let it run for the entire evening.

Come the following morning, it is still running. So I stopped it, shutdown the server yet again, and grab my installation USB.

Attempt a reinstall, check the installation media, a basic XenServer install to USB 15GB, and using cciss storage for my VM's.

Attempt to login, and receive an alert for incorrect password. OK, reinstall again, this time for testing password is "123123".

      Same incorrect password message.

So this time I get another USB Drive to install to the installation runs just fine, no alerts. System boots up and give me a cryptic message (sorry I'm not at home to confirm the message)

So I guess my question is, should I have to rebuild the RAID?

It's the only thing that has remained untouched since moving the server. I've tried two distinct USB drives, and formatted both before reinstalling to them.

      Thanks in advance.

    • Training requirements - what should be pre-loaded

So with MangoCon fast approaching I figured now is as good a time as any to ask those that are leading classes to let us know what we will need loaded on our laptops.

      • So what software will be shown to us?
      • What should we pre-load so the course isn't held up?
      • What environments should we be using (Linux - what distros are being used) / Windows?
      • Any recommended configurations needed for the courses?

Large profiles have always been the bane of RP. I had a user who had a 110GB profile, and bitched and moaned when she we jump on someone else's computer "real quick" and wonder why it took an hour to load.

    • Consolidating Group Policy Objects

So this is a two fold question regarding GPO's.

First, does it hurt to have multiple distinct GPO's for specific purposes? (say 40 for arguments sake, I don't know how many we have specifically.)
I'm assuming that multiple small GPO's means more work for the servers and client pc's that receive these GPO's but want confirmation.

Second, is there an automated way to compile the existing GPO's into 1 concise GPO?

    • Always Virtual - A Topic discussing the many cases of Virtualizing your Server Fleet

As having as many topics as there are about "Should I virtualize this" or "What can I do to back this up" or "I'm dead in the water and need help rebuilding my server". I figure here's a good place to discuss different topics we need around the communities, where a virtual fleet would be perfect.

Discussing the reasons why virtual makes total sense in almost every case. The backup options for virtual (incremental and full), implementation options (what hypervisors are commonly used). How to pick a hypervisor for your business. How to build reliability by virtualizing and work-load conditions for different softwares. SQL, AD, File Shares to name a few.

Here we have an article of a newbie employee to the world of IT looking to build a more reliable backup solution for 4 physical servers. Currently running Server2003 with Backup Exec, and a few custom scripts.

Without any specifics regarding the reasons why everything is still physical and without any glaring reasons why this shouldn't be virtual. The backup options for this case seem pretty straight forward.

Virtualize the fleet on XenServer CE and use NAUBackup to export the backup files off host. Reuse the existing physical servers as storage options.

For the incremental portion of the equation, there are a multiplicity of options. Many free and paid options. Name a few.
