Fondly remember those - everyone goes outside, lights a smoke. No one works, no one gets hurt.

Frustrated that I can not locate the set up instructions for setting up Linux on a USB drive... Don't want a live version.. that's easy.
Keep looking... i know it's here.... (ruffles internet pages)

Installing TO. Installing FROM isn't an issue. I had a working drive running Mint 17.1, but it wasn't partitioned right.
-
@g.jacobse try taking the HDD out of whatever you're installing it with.
Is it not recognising the USB drive when you go to select where you want it installed?

all devices work,. it's the 'LIVE' vs. 'installed' Live doesn't 'keep' programs and settings. so installing programs 'clear'
-
@g.jacobse oh strange! I've never had that issue! Admittedly it's been a while since I last did one. Wish I could offer something more useful

Are you doing it through a gui or are you dd'ing the ISO to the drive?

I dont' want to install in Persistent mode. Wanting full install.
Used the Pendrive UUI and Unetbootin methods. Just escape me mind how I did it... (bangs head on desk) -
@g.jacobse I've never installed to a usb like that. Will it not let you select another usb as the target?
-
@g.jacobse waaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit a sec - once you have the live version on it, can't you then install full? Am I just crazy / thinking of live CD options?
aka - boot to live CD, install onto usb from there?

Yes you can. I just attempting to have a NTFS or FAT32 volume as wee on the USB drive.

You don't want a full install onto USB stick. You want to image the Live image to there instead.

Running a full install on flash media will kill it very quickly.

About to head off to dinner in the old town of Panama City.
-
so I figured I'd try to install Arch on an old laptop for fun. I'm getting a failed retrieving file on all of the repos. Maybe I should just take that as a hint
-
I keep meaning to play with Arch, but I'm never sure of the compelling reason why.
-
For desktop Linux I like to play with Linux Mint, Fedora and OpenSuse.
