What aspects of gaming do you like? I love point and click adventure games that tell a story.
I'll answer that by saying that in the last 20 years I've played Monster Truck Madness and Age of Empires 1, (didn't know there was a 2). That's it.
I've played most of my games on VGA screens.

Looking at repacing my NAS (home) and various options now that the computing requirements have changed in the house.

AoE2 was the big one. AoE1 was good, but basically a flash in the pan. They made it and 1-2 years later replaced it with the massively upgraded AoE2. AoE2 remained their flagship for the next two decades. They made big changes and made AoE3 which was a huge failure, it wasn't a tweak like it should have been but rather a wholly different game that sucked (or at least was very different so people who liked AoE2 weren't happy.) AoE2 is basically the original game with upgraded graphics, networking, bigger everything, more options, but all the same basics.
Finally, due to the crazy popularity of AoE2, they rebuilt it, then rebuilt AoE1. So both are still available, fully modernized, while still being the original games.

@siringo quote from Steam reviews... "While AoE 1 isn't a masterpiece like AoE 2, it's still a great game with very solid mechanics."
AoE2 is like chess, it's the perfect game of its genre. I wonder if RTS will ever see a game as finally tuned as AoE2 was.
Much of NTG's early history was built on AoE2 game nights.

I did a bunch of plex maintenance and content updates this weekend, too. I run it on Ubuntu 16 using a VM on ESXi 6.0, on a Dell r710 with about 30tb of storage. I share my plex with several of my family members and a few close friends which is why it's a little over-engineered.

I only have ~2TB available on mine and it is running on my old Dell desktop (i7 processor from like 6 years ago). KVM on Fedora 31 and Plex instance is Fedora 31. I really need to step up the storage

Try Civ6, or Civ5, or really any of the Civilization games. They're turn-based, giving you plenty of time to think and plan, and you can save at any time to go back to it later. Civ is also the only game to have a song that's won a Grammy (performed best here: https://youtu.be/B1cjW3rGSvg?t=24). There's no storyline, which you did request, so try Stardew Valley. You write your own narrative, and it is timed. You get a mechanic to pause at any point, but the days are very specific and the tasks to be done are well laid out. You can pause/save and return to any point or restart days.
Part of the AoE3 genre of RTS Isolinear games is Age of Mythology. It has a storyline, and is like AoE3, but with gods. Fun!
Factorio is good, also isolinear. No story. It requires that you pay attention and plan. This is a good game if you like running cable since there are belts in your factory. So. Many. Belts. Try the free demo; it's like 500mb or something ridiculous.
Tropico (4/5/6) is loads of fun and the latest one has lots of humor that you'll love if you hate the current president. I like it. The graphics are good, the tutorial is great, and a loose story-line is maintained. It also has a good theme track, though it does get tiresome after being a little too repetitive.
I've been playing a lot of UBOAT lately. It's capable of being played in the first person view, though I spend a lot of time on the map. It's in early release so look for changes, but I find it very distracting. I'm looking forward to changes that will make it more difficult. -

Tropico is amazing. One of my favourite series. Tropico 3 is good, too.
