Changing a tire is pretty easy to do, so long as you leave said tire changing equipment in your car.
A new tire on the other hand always hurts because they're going to up-sell you to get two tires, mounted and balanced.

the mount and balance should be part of the pricing and...
Only if you let them up-sell you, but if you simply say " I need a (whatever size tire you need) mount and balance also", then you'd be fine with out being up-sold. but if you come in and not know the size of the tire they see you as less than adequate with vehicles and believe you can be up sold.
it's just a sales game.I worked on construction sites for about a year So I've had many popped tires and got new ones without being up-sold on 2.
-
@WrCombs The up-sale comes because many tires would get worn out more rapidly if not level.
I know you can refuse, and I often do too because I'm cheap, doesn't mean that you don't actually need two tires.

Rear wheels on a FWD you should be OK to change just 1, I'd avoid going mis-matched on the drive axles... unequal traction can do nasty things in rain and snow.

Found a nail. Getting it patched and two new tires.

So you were up-sold? Or did you know you needed tires and the nail in the proverbial coffin was what made you stop and get them checked?
