(I know some Nutanix guys tried it but kept burning out SATA DOMs).

Sata dom? Who the f*** still uses them? Even when I was a c++ coder in automation industry we were phasing out them 3 years ago! Just mainteinance of production stuff.
Btw I see your point. For these applications

Hi @stacksofplates. Did you find something about virt module.
      Here's https://docs.ansible.com/ansible/latest/modules/virt_module.html#virt-module link.

But, I cannot build a machine? with creating command.
by the way: your article is awesome.

Yeah that's why I wrote this. That virt module doesn't support cloning systems. I never got around to linking that module. I'll see if I can find it again. You just need to put it in your local module library and then you can call it like any other module.

If there was a robust package I could use to get agentless and CBT and file level restore on KVM, I will buy it, if it is reasonable.

There was a thread on the other site about Unitrends having agentless on it sometime this year. Ill have to see if I can find it.

But I cannot even install Unitrends on Hyper-V server.............

As for Sharepoint - You don't get that much storage in Sharepoint in O365, so you'll likely be paying for more storage there. Sharepoint also has a number of files per site limit, just something else to watch out for.

For future reference to anyone wondering, I spoke to three different O365 reps today and they said the limit has been bumped to 1 million items so we'll be good for a while!

      That's a bit more!

      FATeknollogeeF

      Solved
      I posted this on https://www.redhat.com/archives/virt-tools-list/2017-August/msg00210.html

Laszlo Ersek posted the solution: https://www.redhat.com/archives/virt-tools-list/2017-August/msg00244.html
It can be mitigated manually: when the VM boots, interrupt it at the
TianoCore splash screen. In the setup utility, navigate to:

      Boot Maintenance Manager
      Boot Options
      Add Boot Option

      In the file chooser, select

      <whatever device you have>/EFI/fedora/shim.efi

and enter a description (name) for the boot option.

      Then,

      Boot Maintenance Manager
      Boot Options
      Change Boot Order

and move the new boot option to the top of the list.

After you commit the changes, you can forcibly reset the VM, or else
return to the setup TUI front page, and select Reset there.

I'm having a hard time following this. So we have one(two) KVM host, fedora instance running virt manger, another fedora running vnc server?

Install Cockpit: dnf install cockpit cockpit-machines
Then do a dnf group install "Virtualization".

Set each VM to use SPICE and VNC. You can get VM console access via Cockpit and the VNC display.

cockpit gets installed on the KVM host?

      Yes.

Can I create VMs within cockpit? I do not see an option for that.

No, but you can connect to your KVM host via virt-manager from another Linux PC.

Or do a search for my Kimchi guide:

      https://mangolassi.it/topic/14675/fedora-26-kvm-html5-remote-access-with-web-console-via-kimchi

      Guide is here:
      https://www.timothygruber.com/linux/fedora-26-kvm-html5-remote-access-with-web-console-via-kimchi-part-1/

I have tried connecting virt manger to my KVM host but I get all kinds of errors. Not sure if I am doing it right. Do you have a guide for connecting to a remote KVM host with virt manger for a non-root user? I get lots of accessed denied. I did end up finding your guide after searching cockpit on the forum.

You have to put your user in the virtual manager group. Forget the proper name of the group.

      @stacksofplates knows it

I researched and I dont want to read 1000 page from RedHat, I wondered anybody have more info about this, and is there CLI command where you can manage this ?

It's probably just an interface for tuned. The names look similar.

      Correct, the file is

      /etc/tuned/active-profile

And there is service called tuned, thanks for this.

And to check on profiles available:

@msff-amman-itofficer said in Open Source Hypervisors: do we really have them? do we really need them?:

      my take on this:

ESXi free is limited, 8 vcpu per VM and that limit can be easily reached limit.

It's easily reached if you starve a VM of IOPS or RAM and it's spinning cycles waiting on IO. In reality VERY few things need 8 vCPU. I've seen The ONLY exchange server for 5000 users not need that many resources.

Given modern Skylake hardware, and 4Ghz Intel Xeon Cores's if your hitting the 8vCPU limit I'm REALLY curious why your not willing to spend the one time ~$200 per host that is the Essentials bundle to get some more features is a rounding error in your budget (it's like less than a $1 a day per host).

Keep in mind it is not per hosts, but ~$600 per three hosts, so for much of the SMB that's either $300 or $600 per host and makes things like future upgrades potentially a problem. And $600 per host is enormous for the SMB market. Absolutely staggering. Given that 90% of the market can't even cost justify a server, let alone a server with that much additional licensing.

On a single host, how much value is that $600 getting an SMB versus getting free, unlimited use virtualization with $600 of faster hardware? When we are talking a $3,000 server, an extra $600 is anything but trivial.

The "only $200 per host" is really "holy crap, $200 per host with a minimum of three!!" That's not at all a small number, not in the SMB market. And especially not in an SMB market outside of the US.

That depends on the hypervisor. VMware ESXi can do this. It's an extremely limited feature and of little value. It's neat and good for things like VDI, typically, but not very useful for servers and there is a reason most platforms don't work towards adding it.

I concur. For most workloads, it's more a pain than a solution.

yes I just realize that my question is stupid for the RAM part 😄
