Templates are used for the most generic of tasks.

Like how to setup Exchange emails on an iPhone. A personalised top and tail and then step by step instructions throughout.

Anything not 100% repeatable is custom.

We have Spiceworks setup. People email an address we have setup for help. Spiceworks sucks in the email and creates the ticket. Other than when we respond out of it people don't know anything about the ticketing system. You can really change how and when Spiceworks sends out emails, making it almost invisible to the end user. I recommend some type of ticketing system just for tracking purposes.

@IRJ said in Where Do I Go Next from Destop Support:

I'd like to add that it is generally much easier to change positions when going to a new company. If you are valuable to the helpdesk or desktop support team, they may not want to let you go. Even if you do move from the helpdesk, you will always be looked at as the low man on the totem pole for your new team.

It is much easier to go apply for a desktop support job after having 1-2 years experience in helpdesk. Then after you have 1-2 years experience as desktop support, you can move to a networking or system position with a new company. If you move within the company the timeframe will be more like 3-5 years considering you have to L1-L3.

      I agree completely with this.

I moved divisions to get away from the deskside support.

@black3dynamite Good call. I had to make some adjustments to SELinux.

Never found one that I liked.

Never found a ticketing system you liked or never found an open source ticketing system you liked?

Either, i suppose. But specifically an open source ticket system that runs on Linux.

I am just not able to find any pricing information, though. No idea what this might cost. It is a British company and does not appear to have any US operations.

Just signed up, on the admin section it is asking me to choose which package I want. (hosted)

      $0 Standard
      $24 Professional
      $54 Enterprise.

Surely it would have been fixed by now?

I am used to Spiceworks, this looks rather clunky.

Will need to have a play with the SW.

      Looks clunky but works solidly.
