EATON AMA

The biggest draw of Eaton UPS gear is the software. Are all models able to be tracked? Does it require software on computers for the UPS models that do not have network capabilities?
-
@BRRABill for one thing - our people love being a part of communities like SW and now ML. thanks for having us! we've learned a ton by engaging with the individuals...and I think the users appreciate the engagement on the vendor side of things!
-
@DustinB3403 It would be completely dependent on the full list of equipment, but we can definitely make a recommendation for you. With our IPM software, we can load shed some of the non-critical VMs and hosts during an outage to extend runtime. That can make it quite a bit more affordable for you and you can avoid having to purchase as many battery packs to achieve that runtime. What hypervisor are you utilizing?
-
@JColeKen Xen 6.5
Currently a single host (we still have several physical servers that I'm pushing to virtualize). Which when we do, we'll be adding 2 additional hypervisors.
-
The SysAdmin team I am a part of uses Eaton almost exclusively at the moment. I love how easy the units are to install compared with similar options from other companies! The straps are excellent! lol.
-
@IRJ Very comparable when it comes to price and functionality. We do offer a 3-year warranty that covers the entire UPS and the battery: http://powerquality.eaton.com/Products-services/Backup-Power-UPS/3S.aspx?cx=3
Typical desktop models:
Eaton 3S: http://powerquality.eaton.com/Products-services/Backup-Power-UPS/3S.aspx?cx=3
Eaton 5S: http://powerquality.eaton.com/Products-services/Backup-Power-UPS/5S.aspx?cx=3The 5S has a nice LCD screen.

@JaredBusch Yes, all network card capable models can be tracked. Ones with a network card will be auto-detected and pulled into the main Intelligent Power Manager software screen. For those with a USB connection, it would require it to be loaded locally due to the limited communication capability on those units.
-
Speaking of batteries and returns...
Does Eaton have any sort of trade-in policy for UPSes of other manufacturers?

So you mean there is not a simple agent that desktops can have to report it back to the main controller?
-
@nadnerB we have an agreement and are stewards with calls2recycle http://www.call2recycle.org/list-of-stewards/. You can use them to safely recycle our 1PH UPS batteries. If you are looking for a replacement head here. http://eatonbattery.montageinteractive.com/

Using a UPS is a short term option. In some cases services need to be maintained longer -
Are there best practices for deploying a UPS with a generator?

How much value do you put on product reviews from IT pros? Are there other places you look for them, outside of these communities (SW/ML, etc...)?
-
@BRRABill We do! Our UPSgrade program allows you to trade in your old UPS and get a new model at a discount. We also dispose of our old equipment in an environmentally sound manner for you. Eaton.com/UPSgrade
-
@JaredBusch They can report status, but you're unable to take any action on the ones that do not have the network card.

Good question! I assumed, and we all know what that means!
-
@gjacobse yes, you can trade in competitor units as well.
-
@dafyre it's the little things that count!

Hi ... I now remember looking at this in the past. It says to contact a reseller for more information on the program. And I think my reseller was a little unclear.
Can you give us some information here on the AMA?
