And it hurts the department? Are you sure? You interject these things but if it really hurts Staples, are you confident that they are telling you to do it? How does it hurt the company?

Operational stuff, such as stocking, is important to driving general sales. When something is not on the shelf, even if we have it, someone may walk out without asking if we have it. It DOES hurt sales.

Exactly. So it is important. Part of the whole of delivering value to the customers.

Yes, I've never denied its importance. However, it doesn't require any particular skill to do handle, unlike the sales and tech portions of the job. It's about the most efficient use of labor. CAN I do it? Yes. But there are things that I can do that others can't. Anyone can stock the shelves.

Not having a income to afford something doesn't entitle you to free, reduce stuff or to steal it. Seriously Go in Walmart and try that. just walk out saying it's okay I can't afford this item. That's entitlement attitude someone else has it so I should get it. It's stealing it does not matter it it's a tangible product or not.

Again, you view using a proper license in this way as stealing. I don't. Argue all you want, but the logic in my head will not view it that way. The example you use is irrelevant to this example.

At this point the excuse you misunderstood can't apply. We've explained it up one way and down the other. Either you're just not getting this, which means IT might not be the career for you, or you're just ignoring us.

Couldn't the same be said of you? http://mangolassi.it/topic/4331/cloudatcost-opendns-issue/105?page=6 There a multiple threads where using illegal material has come up.

He's new to IT, He's still learning and has a language barrier. Give him a chance and get off your high horse.

I am not saying I'm not going to continue to try to help. Scott gave him a config though. Copy and paste is pretty simple concept. Also, I am still new to IT. I know this. But I read all the responses to questions I ask and take everything under consideration. I may weigh it myself but I at least weigh it. In a lot of these threads it's just felt like we've been ignored. It honestly feels like we tell him how to fix it and then whoever is there in person tells him something else and he totally disregards what we said.

Well since we determined earlier that the $4 CloudatCost Dev1 (after coupon) was too expensive for him and the A+ was $300 (two times $150) last time I saw it... that's way, way more than 20 times!!

True, I forgot about the fact it's two separate tests. Fair enough.

The bottom line is.... you don't care that you pirate things. And that's fine, sort of. Take it for what it is. You are open about your piracy, proud of it, I think. You brag about it constantly. When someone calls you on it you use your catchphrase "whatever." Having no moral compass and stealing from others is something you make a decision about. You lose all professional respect and personal integrity when you do it, but that's your choice.

But claiming that the most basic piracy isn't piracy isn't something you get to have an opinion on. It is what it is.

We can't all have your level of income @scottalanmiller, or get everything you get for free or insane discounts. Being you has granted you certain privileges that I think has disillusioned you to the situation most people are in. Maybe it's the Aspergers or something else, and I don't mean that as a dig, but if it's piracy, fine. It is what it is. No one has been hurt or killed in the process. Microsoft has not gone out of business. No one has lost a job because of this. Yell at me all you want for my "lack of morals/ethics" but from where I'm standing, I don't see anyone suffering.

It's an essential cert for people getting started. Once you've got about a year in the field, get your A+. Skim a study guide on it and you should pass without issue. It isn't worth a lot, but some places will screen you based on it. It's stupid but it's how it is.

Skip it, you are already past that point in your career. Any job that will look at it will be a career ending position. The time and money you would have to spend to get that is crippling. It's easily twenty times the cost of building a starter lab that will be you much further in your career. It's more expensive than many good certs that would actually help you. Even if you were ready to pass it today, it's not worth the money. Avoid it completely.

Are we talking TV shows or movies here?

I don't condone piracy, but that said, without it we definitely wouldn't have many of the options/technologies we have today.

When it's easier to acquire music on Napster than from the retailer, then people are going to switch. Apple clearly showed that when the price point is good (from the customer perspective) and access is easy (iTunes) people will flock to purchases.

The same goes for movies and today we have services like Netflix and Vudu that charge reasonable rates for a pretty good if not great product. And I'm really glad to see that HBO is finally joining the full on digital age and providing a non cable connected service.

Totally agree with this. My biggest issue with Netflix is the delay between when a season finishes and when it goes up on the site. Haven't gotten into Hulu as of yet...

Yes Sir.I choose the field as Networking and in that I will follow the Comptia Network +

Network+ is very fundamental. It doesn't apply solely to networking careers. Even as a desktop tech, you should have the Network+.

It's an essential cert for people getting started. Once you've got about a year in the field, get your A+. Skim a study guide on it and you should pass without issue. It isn't worth a lot, but some places will screen you based on it. It's stupid but it's how it is.

If you want to get into security, go for your Security+. Another CompTIA cert. I found it to be mostly common sense but that might have just been the questions I got. If you're gonna try to get into security, that's another essential one.

And that's illegal for copyrighted content. It makes those that pay, pay more due to loss of sales. Volume of sales decreases the price.

No, it's the opposite. Pirating reduces demand for paid content and lower demand lowers prices and reduces profits for the content providers. Look how the cost of CDs has plummeted since Napster was invented. Pirating largely influences the profits going into fat executives, not the price you and I pay. Think of BitTorrent as a competitor to Amazon and Napster - competition lowers prices, it doesn't increase them.

In economics terms, it's simple supply and demand.

While I agree with this, it doesn't change the fact that torrenting, to download copyrighted media, is illegal in most nations. Copyrighting is not a free market/supply and demand idea. Instead it creates a limited monopoly for the terms of the copyright, or patent. Originally it was to protect and encourage innovation... not really sure that it still does that though.

My philosophy is that if it's been on TV and I could have recorded it and converted it to a digital file, how is that any different?

@thanksajdotcom In life you will learn that having unbelievable integrity means a lot to people.

Can you do what your doing? Sure, I considered doing it. I have a dreamspeak key too, but I am not a student, so I don't use it.

What happens when you don't get a job offer because of this posting?

If a job is going to mince words over an issue like that, I don't want to work there anyways. Also, we've already established the Dreamspark key is valid for life and that's perfectly legal. What you're doing by not using it is just stupid, as it violates nothing to use it.

So if a company won't hire you over lack morals and ethics it's just stupid. Hmm.. Well McDonalds will hire without ethics.

It's about being reasonable. I'm using a Dreamspark key, which is legitimate, for my own personal educational purposes. I did not pirate the key. So I'm using it on a cloud server. Oooohhhhh, big whoop. If a company really wanted to dig deep enough into my world to find that out, AND make an issue out of it, they can take any job they have and stick it. Not worth it to me to work for a company that digs that deep into your life.

It's not legitimate for the use you used it it does not matter that the key is valid.

You obliviously don't realize how good SEO is and that any company will think this means you don't care about terms, laws etc. and will do the same on their own network. I'm curious of what @Minion-Queen would think of a employee or potential employee posting they don't care about violating licensing terms, pirating etc on a public forum.

Ok, violating licensing terms is not equal to pirating. I don't agree with that.

Either one is violating the licensing. So yes as far as your agreement it is just as bad.

      That's your opinion. I disagree.

The problem is, companies handle out both "senior" and "engineer" to people who are not doing either to make their positions sound more attractive. It really causes problems because then people go on Glassdoor and report really low rates for the industry that are far lower than they really are.

Microsoft does, else they would have made an exemption clause for educational use. They did not.

Yeah, and a move like that costs them probably tens of thousands of dollars, because of all the meetings and legal time it takes to get like that spelled out. Again, if they really want to come after me, I'm sure they can find me.

@scottalanmiller , yeah, software dev jobs pay well, even though they are, like you said, by no means IT. An entry-level dev job pays along the lines of a lot of senior level IT jobs, in my experience.

Not quite, but it does generally lack the low end jobs that IT has (there is no call center equivalent in software engineering.)

Austin pays horribly for IT, far lower than Dallas.

I know that's not a perfect comparison, but entry level devs can start at 50 or 60K, which is what I've seen tons of senior engineers make in IT.
