If I could take my current wage, and live in Mississippi, I'd be golden!

But, I would never want to live there.... so yeah.

My wife and I in 6 years will be kid free. So we are really looking at what we want to do and where we to live after kids as we will have a lot more options and it will be easier to do. We ruled out all places that have a much too high of living cost. We are looking at Tennessee. I am even thinking about getting out of IT and going into brewing. Hard Ciders and fruits.

@dave247 OpenDNS is just fine to use, like the other major DNS providers they will probably be a step up from your ISP provided service.

What they don't do is filtering of any kind unless you add a paid service on. I've started running my own DNS server now that does block known advertising IP addresses called Pi-Hole (Yes, I've seen many names that are better.)

I like Pi-hole because they tell advertisers to shut their piehole.

The forgiveness will be taxed as income, probably at the rate bonuses/lottery income, much higher than regular income unless he is making tons of money(he isnt if working for feds).
He is essentially an indentured servant to the federal government for the next decade.

Also, people saying the government shouldnt be spending money on education, LOL.
It should be the highest expenditure of the federal government and local governments.
It should dwarf the War Department's budget.

Spending on education is fine, spending to remove debt that someone agreed to is that individual persons responsibility. Not the public's responsibility.

I understand what you are saying. I get where you are coming from. I have set myself and family up to have my loans paid off in the next 5 to 7 years. Without the forgiveness. I have been eating a lot of ramen and pb&j for lunch. We have been watching our money closely. Whether or not the government should do this is one thing. I would be stupid not to take it though when it is available to me.

Just read that the redesign was pretty much because Klingons look had changed in the other series they thought they had creative license to do it in this one. Which to me is pretty much saying because we wanted to do it. Screw the stories from the other franchises we are better. Which does not sit well with me.

My stance isn't with you. It's with the system, how it's rigged and royally helping 1 and screwing over 1000.

You said your self that this 63K debt is tax-free. That's insane.

Depends on which tax schedule you use.
The tax on 63K at long-term capital gains rate (it's a long-term payback, and it's not THAT much money) is 12% or ~7.56K note a huge amount.

Also, lots of stuff is tax-free. I didn't pay taxes on the money I put into my 401K. That's $5940 (or $11,880 joint filed, as I'm maxing out my wife's account) worth of taxes I'm not paying every year! The earnings in my Roth IRA are tax-free (I put in 11K last year, and the 8% gains for the year on it are tax-free!)

Semantics here.... but assuming traditional 401k, that's tax-deferred not free. On the Roth side though you are correct earnings are tax free.

The money you put into a Roth IRA is free, not the earnings. If you put in a ROTH IRA 10,000 and earnn 2,000 the 10,000 is tax free because, you have already paid taxes on that 10,000. The 2,000 it earned can be taxed. I have been checking on what to do with my 401K

The latitudes still have an Ethernet port. It is really nice.

They sure do. It is what I am typing on right now. I just don't like the fact that some laptops are dropping the ethernet port. No ethernet on my Chromebook, that is fine. On my actual laptop please give me that ethernet port. I don't want to have to remember a USB dongle.

    • RE: Would You Hire Someone in IT Who Does Not Have a Home Lab

@scottalanmiller is right. You can have a lab for Zero up front cost. Before I had a cheap 1U Supermicro server that I virtualized on I used old PCs that I obtained through doing support for people after they were done with them and I used them. They couldn't all host virtual machines but I could still install an OS on them and learn on them. Heck as long as the computer runs I keep it just so I have something to mess around on, I have two old Athlon X2 Dell PCs that are old but will run any Linux server fine. My laptop is an "Old" laptop that one of the attorneys I worked for wanted me to destroy. I destroyed the hard drive for them. (it was an old 5400RPM drive) threw an SSD in it, and 16GB of RAM and the thing absolutely screams now.

@penguinwrangler said in Fighting the Afternoon Energy Dip:

You might need a sleep study done. You might not be getting enough quality sleep. I have sleep Apnea I believe @scottalanmiller has it really bad like I do as well. My heart is enlarged because of it. The doctor told me that without my CPAP, if I sleep 8 hours, I am working the equivalent rest of someone with no sleep problems would feel like after maybe 2 hours of crappy sleep. If I wear my mask I will usually wake up right before my alarm feeling refreshed. Without it, I could sleep much longer, possibly with the fishes. So it isn't something to dismiss.

So before you had this done, you weren't waking up multiple times per night or anything like that and felt like you were fully asleep the entire time?

I would "wake up" during the middle of the night when I was unable to breathe but it isn't like waking up in the morning. You "wake up" enough to roll over so you can breathe, it isn't a full conscience awakening, most of the time. Your body does want to stay asleep to get rest. I had my tonsils, adenoids, and uvula removed and it is better but I still have sleep apnea. I went and got tested in my 20s. With sleep apnea, you stop breathing and it can cause sudden cardiac arrest which is what my Grandfather died from. One night it was so bad that I lost control of my bladder and I did awake gasping for air and fell out of bed. It seriously felt like someone was choking me. That is what prompted me to go see the doctor. Until that moment I really didn't think I had it that bad or even had it at all. I wish I would have known earlier. I feel so much better now as far as sleep goes. I could have used that CPAP when I was in college.

I get his budget is being cut, but that doesn't effect what the school district already has deployed.

His renewal is coming up soon, that is why we are replacing it.

      Ah.

As to the next question, why aren't you implementing NethServer and Samba 4 from there?

Because Samba 4 domain on a CentOS server without all the extra NethServer stuff is slimmer and runs bettter. Also it is just as easy to administer.

@tim_g I don't think one or the other is a good predictor of an outcome. It just shows there isn't a strong correlation.

Well it says that more than half (60%) of the world's billionaires did graduate college.

I do realize that statistic by itself is inconclusive, but it still shows that your more likely to be a billionaire if you graduate college.

It is a meme... so it may not even be true. I never verified it.

Or if you are a billionaire, you more than likely have the privilege to go to college as it is already paid for by your family.

Anyone can go to college. The poorer you are the more likely it is to be free... where you even get money for gas and such.

The privilege part is whether or not you have the means to go to college... such as a car, time, ability to put kids in child care so you can go, live in a place that even has college access, etc...

Your social life matters too... if you are surrounded by and are friends with people who only care about gangs and drugs and not about success, you probably won't go to college either. It has a lot to do with up-bringing.

The real question that has to be asked, would the Billionaires who went to college, be a billionaire if they didn't go to college. That then gets to the crux of the issue.

In addition to the sleep study, see if someone will let you test your blood sugar when you start feeling tired sometime. That's one of the major signs of the onset of diabetes, and is an easy self-check if you have access to a meter.

Opposite, though. With diabetes you normally get the dip without food, not from avoidinig it.

      Prison Story:
I was the evening supervisor (sergeant) of the Ad-Seg house (commonly called "The Hole") had an offender declared a medical emergency because of low sugar. We got the nurse to him (very quickly as she was already doing rounds in the unit) and she checked him. His blood sugar was at 20. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes.

      Normal blood glucose numbers

      Fasting
      Normal for person without diabetes: 70–99 mg/dl (3.9–5.5 mmol/L)
Official ADA recommendation for someone with diabetes: 80–130 mg/dl (4.4–7.2 mmol/L)

      2 hours after meals
Normal for person without diabetes: Less than 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L)
Official ADA recommendation for someone with diabetes: Less than 180 mg/dl (10.0 mmol/L)

Man I really dislike cubicles. I worked in an open floor space (where the center was a work bench) three people in the room on phones was enough to drive someone crazy.

I like MileIQ. It captures all of my drives. I then go into the app and swipe left for personal and right for business on the trip card. I usually do this while I am in line waiting on something, lunch, at mechanic etc. You can then go in and add details to each trip. Then you can export it out into an IRS approved report.
