@momurda The thing about it is this, who is going to be first to sign up for Moviepass? The people that like to see a lot of movies, which causes them to burn through their money. I saw a news release that had that they needed to reach 5 Million subscribers to be profitable. I guess the math works out that way. I won't resubscribe though.

Trying to get in the right mood to answer tickets. I have had my broken ankle for only four days now and I am already stir crazy. I can't do like I normally do. I am really frustrated and grumpy. I don't want to deal with stupid users today.

    • Monitoring Systems

I have heard and read up on several monitoring systems. Zabbix, Nagios (including FAN), prtg, munin, etc. I have never been the one to set one up. So guess what I am now in that position. I will have three Citrix XenServer hosts to monitor and various Linux VMs of all ilk to monitor. Plus Ubiquiti networking gear. What is the best system to learn and use? I know this maybe somewhat subjective but I really don't know the strengths and weaknesses of these platforms other than what I have googled and read but I am looking for advice from people who have used these.

    • RE: Spouses, Furniture and Generic Cereal

@irj I will setup a store and offer the generic brands at a high cost than the name brand, not a lot higher but higher. You can then order from my store and I will give you back some of the money. It will still be cheaper than the name brand that way for you. It is a win win.

I will do a build later tonight once I am off work. I will do a build with an AMD FX-8300 CPU. That is 8 Cores. I love those processors. Cheap and good performance.

@kyle said in Citrix XenApp 6 farm:

@penguinwrangler said in Citrix XenApp 6 farm:

@kyle do you mean you will publish the application to the desktop?

      We currently have 4 2008 servers running XenApp 6. IE 11 doesn't support IE11 but 2008 R2 does.

I was looking at adding a 2008 R2 node to the 4 2008 servers and wondered if there is any issues or beat practices to mixing 2008 & 2008 R2 in a clustered XenApp farm to publish a newer app only supported on 1 server.

I can't testify to that as all of our servers in our farm are 2008 R2, we are looking at putting some 2016 in there soon to "play" with for ourselves to see how it is, and to do up some user documentation before we throw them on 2016.

    • openSuSe install options...

Is there a way to redirect the x11 at boot so you can actually be on a remote machine selecting the install options? I thought I read that somewhere but I haven't been able to find info on it. I think I might be using the wrong search terms.

    • RE: Always Teach to the Future

@scottalanmiller I was a tech director at a K-12 school in rural northeast Missouri (2007-2009). The tech level of teachers was so pitiful that it is painful to talk about. You have teachers that have no idea how to use technology and they are teaching kids that will be graduating high school in the 2020s. They are literally teaching them the same way as I was taught back in the 1970/80/90s. Getting away with it because they are not "good" with technology. These people would be fired in a business setting because they couldn't find the print button.

First off the driver got out without any injuries. Second I had to deal with driving in the backup caused by this. That is how my morning started.

Well, I walked the tech through it, twice as he messed something up the first time. Wasn't horrible, of course, his phone died halfway through and then he had to plug it in and was yelling from the other side of the server room.

    • RE: How Do Such Big Gaps Get Missed in IT Education

I started learning when I was middle school aged back in the early 80s. I learned DOS because I was fascinated with computers, that is all my computer had on it. I had to make boot discs and learn how to manage the memory if I wanted to play games, ahh Star Control I and II, those where the days! Back in the 80s and 90s to do cool stuff you had to learn how the computer worked, I remember running my BBS system. All before you had Google or the internet. Now I think all we have are people that know how to push GUI buttons. They don't understand what that button really is doing. I don't really program that much but I find bugs all the time and often it is because someone didn't understand how the computer really works. I took a break from computers when I was in law enforcement for several years and I was scared when I went to change careers and actually get into IT because it had been so long for me just even away from it as a hobby. After getting in the field I wasn't worried at all. It seems like they don't teach the basics.

If you want to go deep I recommend any of Thomas Sowell books. My favorite was A Conflict of Visions: The Ideological Origins of Political Struggles, revised edition. Here is a listing of his books:

    • RE: Is Most IT Really Corrupt?

The things you listen are not necessarily because of IT. Other professions could do this to a business as well. This is just a moral issue related to the person not the profession. Because IT can make this easy to do, it attracts that type of person.

Who is getting a good view of the eclipse today? I am going out to watch it here in St. Louis. My Sister's town is almost dead center on the totality line in Southern Missouri right by the Mississippi river. She said that there are so many people there that it is impossible to go anywhere. It is a town of about 20,000 and they are saying that there could be up to 8 times that in the area today. They stocked up on food and have not left their house since Friday. The school canceled classes because of the traffic.
