There used to be one link that went to the top and one to the last read, but they seem to have changed it in a recent update from what I can tell.

The topic title link always went to the topic, post 1.
The XX minutes/hours/days ago link always go to the LAST post in a thread.
Finally, when you click on the topic title, there used to be a very brief pop up that you could click on to get to your last position in the thread.

What they changed was the topic title now is a link to your highest read position in the thread. There is no link anywhere that takes you from a list (unread, recent, category) to post 1 if you have already been in a thread.

Right now, the payments are made only for the public performance right in the underlying musical composition (otherwise known as the “musical work” – the lyrics and musical notes that make up the song). No royalty is paid by businesses to the copyright holders in the sound recordings under Federal law (but see our concerns about whether certain court rulings may cloud this conclusion when dealing with state laws and pre-1972 sound recordings, and see this article about the Register of the Copyright calling for a more general sound recording performance royalty)

If the money isn't going to the copyright holders, who is it going to? Are they sure? I thought when paying ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, that those three entities basically are representing most of the music copyright holders.. and were being paid on the back end.

      Warning! Rant Mode On

Musicians are notoriously bad at reading and understanding contracts. Those companies probably do hold the rights to stream most music, but the artists get jack. Trust me, I've seen the contracts, and told a couple of small hopeful artists that they are getting ripped off. At least the old highway robber barons would let you keep enough that you could turn a profit and provide further business. The big music labels and almost all other content management companies don't even care about getting return business.

      Rant Mode Disengaged

You would think, with things like Youtube and the internet in general that artists would see this and be able to have a better situation. Hell look at the beave (ug, can't believe I went there).

I can't think of how they would prevent you from using it, as I don't think you put any identifying info in until after everything has been installed and the user logs in to activate the license.

Probably the plans that allow for on-premises installs

I say this all of the time. RAID 5, even with small high end SAS drives, rarely gets better than 99% chance of successfully not losing your data. 1% chance of losing data is way, way higher risk than business side people are generally led to believe their RAID will protect them against.

@johnhooks yup, every script that is trying to hit you already checks for the ports to be open, not specific ones. Someone attacking you would never even realize you had changed the port unless they are specifically getting a report of people who had done so, presumably because that would mean that they are better targets to focus on.

Plus if nothing else, it's annoying to remember.

Which alone is considered a bad security practice.

I think the bigger issue is that you allowed a user to run a Ethernet cable without supervision.

Good way to think of it. Clean install is a little extra work today in exchange for a "known" or nearly known environment. An in place upgrade means carrying risk with you, maybe a little, but some that might bite you later.

Or maybe the next IT guy, just leave the headaches for him 😉

      @anonymous $10/mth to do wordpress

Just so you know, you can definitely make a small WordPress site work well on the $5/month option. There's some stuff you will want to be able to do in Linux/WordPress before doing it on a production VPS, namely swap file management in Linux and site caching in WordPress, but once you have those down you might be able to save some money on hosting 🙂

Might be worth trying out if and when you do a test restore of your site. If you do want to test it out, keep in mind you'll have to do the restore from a WordPress-level backup and not a Digital Ocean server snapshot/backup - they don't let you restore those to a smaller-sized VPS.

With all that said, their $10/month option is what I would pick if I were planning on hosting a forum on the same server.

NoMachine (NX) is a great option when you have a Linux server to run it on. Does the Linux box have LAN access to the boxes that you want to reach from it?
