@LAH3385 Once the NTG lab is back up and running (should be soon) and I have some free time (I'm speaking at SpiceCorps Auburn today) I'm going to be playing with NextCloud pretty high on my priority list and will hopefully be able to make an automated install that you can just run, no knowledge needed.

We use the same domain as our website. When we access out website without www infront it redirect to IIS instead of filling in www.domain.com. Now... we found the above command batch that will solve our issue.

The instruction is to create a file (no extension) and named it hosts. Inside input our website IP address and redirective keyword. Somehow it works! our domain.com become www.domain.com. However I don't understand how it works since hosts file was not altered.

Also what does rem type do? I tried rem type /? in cmd but nothing happens. REM supposed to be a remark command for batch file... but why? How? What? o_O feel so noobish asking this question. LOL *cry in corner *

It looks like you are copying an already created host file. As @Danp said the second line is just for remarks.

WSUS's biggest issue is that it requires huge amount of disk space.

Of the mentioned service, Printing is the one that should be separated from a DC if at all possible.

I have so rarely had issue with DNS/DHCP/File/WSUS, while when possible splitting is good, but I woudn't be bothered having any of those on a DC.

WSUS does not have to require disk space. You can have all the control of WSUS and still tell the machines to get the updates fro MS. That is how I run it. With the new Windows 10 settings, I also have the clients allowed to get updates form other computer on the local network.

Now with a 100/20 pipe I wouldn't mind if the machines all get from either each other or direct from MS, but back on the 10/10 days, WSUS removed that load from the internet.

All we know is that GPO for crytolocker was broken/denied thus any protection for CryptoLocker was disabled for at most 48 hours. It was a combination of incidents lead to CryptoLocker. Don't think flash is the cause here.

Put the app/extension ID alone in the Chrome extension whitelist and blacklist policies. The $ID;$URL format, like you have in the OP, is only used in the Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions policy.

FYI, rather than selectively blacklisting I choose to use * in the blacklist policy to deny all. I then explicitly allow certain apps/extensions in the whitelist policy. And finally there are a few of those allowed apps/extensions that I have force installed like uBlock Origin, LastPass, Chrome Legacy Browser Support, etc. It's worked well for me and the clients I manage.

As far as engineering versus IT... that is a decision that can only be made by you. They are two different fields. Both are fine fields. But only you know which one is going to make you happy. And that's what is most important.

Not sure where you get that. RDS is device or user. The license server for RDS has no cost. RDS CALs can be reassigned once expired.

RDS user CALs are about $100. Adobe Acrobat pro is about $500 each

It must be a different User CAL that can't be purchased under 200 or 250 users. I can't find anything in a fast search about this specifically.

True the RDS license server is free, but the Windows Server you'll install Adobe Acrobat on isn't - it's $800+.

As for reassigning the licenses:
In Per User or Per Device mode, a separate TS CAL is required for each user or device that accesses or uses the server software on any server. You may reassign a TS CAL from one device to another device, or from one user to another user, provided the reassignment is made either (a) permanently away from the one device or user or (b) temporarily to accommodate the use of the TS CAL either by a loaner device, while a permanent device is out of service, or by a temporary worker, while a regular employee is absent.
Moving these licenses monthly surely wouldn't be considered permanently away. On top of that, even if it was OK to move them, the licenses only release from their previous user after 60 days of non use, so the monthly change would require at least two full sets of RDS licenses, and the change would take place on the 61 day, not the 60th.

I think the biggest problem with Sharepoint Foundation, in terms of cost, is the database requirements i.e. it will only run with SQL Server.

SQL Server Express is free, but is pretty limited and doesn't really seem intended for production environments. In particular the fact that databases are limited to 10GB, which seems pretty tiny for a typical Sharepoint site. So you quickly end up needing SQL Server Standard edition, which is pretty expensive. If you don't have SQL Server already, you probably need to budget for that at the outset, even if you're only planning on using Sharepoint Foundation.

I'd like Microsoft to provide something in between Express and Standard, but I'm not allowed to criticise Microsoft on ML so I'll say no more 🙂

Don't want to defile an old thread, but I need to add a few things.

First off, comparing Sharepoint to OwnCloud, while beeing a great tool, is like comparing
a warp-capable spaceship to a paperdart. SharePoint is a collaboration platform where you build your own applications on top while OwnCloud is basically a filesharing platform with a few addons.

There are quite a few factors which are driving the costs for SharePoint:

Windows Server CALs (few known users / devices) or Windows Server for Internet Sites ("CAL" flatrate, mucho dinero) SQL Server, Standard or higher edition and CALs (UserCAL's for SQL server are very expensive. Use this for a few known users) or Core edition (Flatrate, can be more or less "cheap". I'm using this one) If going past SP Foundation:
a) SharePoint CAL, Standard should suffice in most cases
b) SharePoint for Internet Sites if public facing with anonymous access
c) You will most probably need a farm, at least one frontend and one backend server. ForeFront UAG/TMG and CAL (used to be the only "supported" reverse proxy). Not sold anymore, no successor available, Windows Server publishing role is used today

So SharePoint Standard / Enterprise on a public facing site with anonymous access can burn through your budget like Oracle and SAP. SharePoint for a known user base can be OK from a licensing point of view. Today, SharePoint on Office365 is way cheaper than having something on premise I guess.

SharePoint has a lot to offer and I haven't found anything FOSS that comes even close myself yet. Alfresco is the only one that at least is a very little bit like SharePoint, but nothing I would call a replacement.

So what is SharePoint actually? Simply said, anything you want it to be. It's an application platform with multiple frontends, the well known website is just one of them.

I think Drupal + Alfresco can get really close. I've built some really cool stuff with Drupal by itself, and with the pseudo Alfresco integration you can have, it will let you do some really nice things.

We have been messing around with Hyper-V on our workstations .
I use Veeam endpoint backup and my boss uses Hyperoo (free).

I haven't heard any complaints.

Good question... we are 60% of the disk at the moment... so that would be no. The space inside VM it self is 50% full.. Say 2TB disk space on hypervisor. the VM is uing 1.2TB. But the OS/Files is using only 600GB out of 1.2TB.
If the cloning means 100% identical then I will not have enough space. But if there is a way to shrink while cloning then it is a viable option.

This also means you're using thick provisioning.

Perhaps you can copy the current VM disk to another VM disk, but one that is thin provisioned. Then it will only take up 600 GB on the disk, leaving you with 2 GB free space until you delete the old VM disk.

Assuming you're upgrading a Windows 7 Pro legally licensed machine, you can legally use downgrade rights to install Windows 7 again.

That's not downgrade rights.. You own both. You have an upgrade which "sits" on top of the full version. You have never needed downgrade rights to go back to a previous version from an upgrade.

That's an interesting way to look at it. Without reading the Windows 10 license I'm not sure if that's accurate or not.. but definitely makes sense. In either case, you do have the right to use Win7 Pro still, once you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

i use what is now PCM. Used to be global, then comp usa, then tiger direct, now PCM...

There is a lot of "typically it means this" and that is somewhat useful. Switches are typically faster, have more ports, are implemented in custom hardware, etc. But typical does not a technology define. There do not appear to be any definitions that actually differentiate one from the other just this kind of "feeling" that people have.

Which is fine, it's a marketing term. Just important to know that an L2 switch is really a "multiport bridge" and an L3 switch is really a "multiport router" and anything beyond that is really just "generally acceptable generalities around marketing and intended use cases."

Good point. I honestly dont' know as I have never used either. I am familiar with Netwrix for a couple of their other free tools.

I'd imagine the Notifier would have some kind of logs in it. I just saw the email this morning and thought of you. 🙂

@LAH3385 Yeah, I am going to allow them very limited access to the domain. Probably won't give domain admin. Just allow him local admin under a secondary account to desktops/laptops. I am also going to have to figure out access to AD for things like creating users and password resets etc.
