      @Dashrender @gjacobse
      This is just for one site. They have several manufacturing sites around all linked via VPN/SDWAN stuff.

      Their HO is just old 🙂 and needs an update (if they get some money) Just wondering what people would do, if you could rip it out and start again.

      I have suggested they try and pull some fibre from the cabins to the main server room instead of daisy chaining switches.

      The only reason I go to Spiceworks is for that 20% of talented people, I want to help them learn and learn from them, I try to avoid the other 80% who are "experts" on HIPAA but spell it HIPPA every single time.

      This for me too. I don't claim to know 100% of everything but I do (in my opinion) know a lot of different things from all fields and I do call myself a jack of all trades. I feel I could excel in most fields of IT including Management.

      @scottalanmiller said:

      You can be amazing but your career is over before you have a chance to demonstrate it because all of the managers are the 80% and have no way to know that you are doing well or, more often, do know it and need to crush you to support their own careers.

      I've found everywhere I've worked so far that the IT Manager has ever come from the field, they have been managers in different fields e.g. Accounting, and "promoted" into IT. So I found this in one place and got out quick as the "manager" I felt was holding me back and taking advice from a poor MSP over my recommendations.

      I've been finding this a lot with a few different websites.

      Microsoft is another good one for changing things. Was looking for Hyper-V Server 2012 and all i kept getting was Server 2012 trial. found it in the end, saved the ISO on a USB to keep forever lol.

      I would love too. Been working (with no more than 4 months off due to redundancy) since I was 17.

      But couldn't afford it! (Wish I saved when I was younger lol)

    • RE: Somethings You Need To Know About Hyper-V

      @WingCreative said:

      The main thing keeping me from going into the deep end with it right now is that, based on my current understanding, it sounds like you need a full version of Server 2012 running to have easy configuration through a GUI. I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to learn how to manage it from Server Core's CLI, but right now I'm happily doing what I need to with XenCenter so it's hard to justify the switch.

      Is that an accurate representation of the state of Hyper-V management or is that another myth?

      Complete Myth my friend, yes i admit getting the tools set-up on both a windows machine and get the settings right on the HyperV server can be a pain the first few times you do it (well it was for me). Once you got the hang of it deployment becomes easier. You also have free tools like 5nine manager to help.

      I'm considering more too HyperV now for new hardware.

      You can build a lot of drivers and such into a base image. Although standardizing on a model is a good first step. You want to reduce "Model Sprawl" whenever possible.

      Yeah we have started trying to buy the same model over the last 6 months, but doesn't help when these suppliers/manufactures keep changing things all the time lol.

      For example, I do a clean Windows 7 install. It doesn't have a network adapter driver. I go to hp.com and type in the model of the PC. It gives me two different options. I don't know which one is the card in my particular PC. How do I find out? The other issue is that downloading files from HP.com is just about the slowest website in the world. It can take hours.

      Tip here, if you go to device manager and click on any device. Go into properties --> Details --> Select Hardware ID's. This will give you VEN and DEV numbers. Go to pcidatabase.com and put either number in and it will tell you the manufacturer and device, helps me a lot when I'm not sure what driver to get.
