Been a weekend I don’t wish to repeat though it hasn’t been terrible.

Dad (85 yo) fell Friday and broke his hip. Surgery yesterday to replace went well. And is in good spirits other wise… it’s difficult being so far away should he need more help.

Fortunately the house has no stairs once inside,.. and that and PT should do okay in recovery.

A lot to do,.. a lot done,.. and zero work stress!

@gjacobse You going to Dayton this year? I had it in my plans but sadly they fell through.

No, never works out, never plan to, only some times have an interest,.. and don’t need anything that bad.

Still catching up on things after getting back from Virginia - was a good trip, good to see family.

Now trying to deal with the three computers I ended up coming back with. Server may be good to go - pass it off to someone in need, Desktop will likely get stripped and recycled or donated. But the iMAC,.. that I have to figure out how to clear/clean to sell. I can't recall the last time or even if I have ever wiped and loaded a MAC. It's ad AiO, so not going to pull the drive out as I would a desktop or laptop...

      Sunday hobbies..

Driving. Visits are done, things exchanged.

Getting to a point I’m not as big of a fan of driving I was once.

@scottalanmiller said in winget vs choco:

@gjacobse Choco is an interface to Nuget.

Winget, I believe, is for the MS Store and managing the installed programs dialogue. So related, but not overlapping.

So - Likely would need to use both as some packages are available on both, but then some are only available in one or the other...

@gjacobse said in WINGET: Not available on Win10.:

Why would Winget not be available on a brand new device with the most updated build?

All my reading has stated that it is native since 1709..

Okay - been to many days since I found this. Seems that yes,.. on a fresh OEM install of Win10 it is not there.

After being fully updated it has been there. So - might just be the Media Creation Build in use that it isn't on. Which is fine with me.

Just had an iPad decide to switch the Ethernet IP setting back to Automatic and it assigned a link-local IP (169.254.x.x) and I'm thankful I finished Network+ classes cause I recognized the IP and was able to have it fixed in 2 minutes (set back to manual and update IP address ) - feeling accomplished today so far.

One of the occasional cases when it’s not DNS. Or the five computer I had here last week where it was DHCP.

    • Win10: reset User security

Rather than to have to rebuild the user profile- is there a process that would reset the users security on the documents?

Mainly seems to be OneDrive. Can open document in the browser and then push to the app, but the OneDrive save on the computer won’t open.

Save the browser to the local computer and compare- both files show the same security options; allow full control:
      System
      User
      Administrator

One file opens, the other access denied.

The spam bots have gotten so bad that we are moving to admin approval on new accounts.

I guess you are seeing them before I do and clearing them as I haven’t seen any for a day or so.

But I understand the move. Will the system purge unapproved accounts or are you still having to do that?

    • RE: Outlook / Office documents: You do not have permissions.

Not totally certain on this, but here are some additional factors.

      • recent Windows updates
      • Dell Disk Protection (DDPE)in use

Thus far, the following has been working:

      Outlook

      • Rename OST file and allow to rebuild

      Word, Excel, etc

      • Sign out of the O365 account
      • Delete all O365 / Office saved credentials
      • Delete all folders that end with CACHE in the %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\
      • Delete Word Normal.dotm
      • Delete the Auto Correct file (no aways) at C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office - generally just deleted them all
      • Sign into Office using Word or Excel

Since making the changes to block spam, the spam accounts seem to have gotten SO much worse. We've never gotten so many before.

Heh - yea... I've noticed ... but at least it's not just plumbers and hot water heaters in Texas... Nice to see a little broader spam offering... Though I wish they would just quit. Know it's generally a bot, or what not.. just annoying for all here to collaborate

Just had a user, who never once posted anything, come in and after EIGHT years, and ask for their account to be disabled. Which since it is an unused account is pretty easy to do. But, weird. Who makes an account, and then EIGHT years later comes back searching for it, finds it unused and pointless (and remember, anonymous) and wants to go through the effort of deleting it? The weird things that happen on forums.

I saw that, and in my days I have not known you to be concerned with inactive accounts. And generally, there is a direct way to ask for an account removal over a public request... Meh - Not unheard of,.. but generally rare....

    • Outlook / Office documents: You do not have permissions.

Run into a few users here of late that are having trouble getting Outlook to open with the error they don’t have permission to the data file.

Renaming the .OST file and allowing Outlook to regenerate seems to resolve the issue. In some cases you get an error that the AutoCorrect file (C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\microsoft\office\mso1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read-only or you may not have permission to modify the file.

Additionally, some files on the desktop (C:\Users\Username\Onedrive -company\desktop) are inaccessible. And if you try to copy them to the users folder (c:\users\username\folder) you get an error where you need to provide administrative permissions to do so.

One user mentioned a recent MS Update last night - has any one else seen this behavior? One suggestion is to rebuild the userprofile - not an easy task on those users remote accessing via the VPN.
