      How long does

      sudo -s

      last for?

Forever, it runs whatever is the default shell. So if you're using bash it's exactly like

      sudo bash

But I mean, if you log off, does it retain? AKA, do you have to do something to turn it off?

You have to exit from that shell. Normally, that's how we'd logoff of an ssh session. On a desktop, logging out should close all user land apps, which include shell sessions.

To keep a shell session running you'd want to use screen and detach the session. Other programs can do the same thing, but I'm forgetting what the newer ones are.

      Got it, OK.

The same cannot be true for Windows -> Mac -< Linux

But it can, and it is. We always say that Mac and Linux share commands natively and that Windows can use them optionally. And that knowing Linux, you can pretty much run anything, including Mac and Windows.

The idea that the only thing that matters is the superficial is, I think, the most dangerous. The reality is, no amount of knowing shared commands makes knowing Linux make you useful on VMware ESXi. The stuff that matters isn't the superficial stuff.

Boy - nothing proves that to me more than working on XenServer. Sure XS runs inside CentOS, but all the commands we really care about are all xen- commands and have nothing to do with CentOS.

The same can be said for VMWare. Sure some of the basic commands are the same, LS, RM, etc.. but these are things in the shell, not the OS.

I'd venture to say a Linux admin would have a far easier time with XS than a Windows admin.

You're quite the ray of sunshine today @scottalanmiller.

Is today the first time you've met @scottalanmiller ????

      🙂

What is hilarious is how surprised people are when they meet him in person and find out that he is a really easy going guy for the most part.

I have mentioned that to him.

He argues the same way, but it just feels so different in person.

@BRRABill said in UNIX: Switching Users with su:

      And why is it sometimes

      one dash

One dash is normally used for "shorthand", or shorted operators for the different programs. IE

      ls -ha

-h is really --human-readable being passed to ls and
-a is really --all being passed to ls

      and other times

      two dashes

Two dashes are normally "long form", see my previous ls example.

      for other commands?

It's really just up to whoever wrote the program. For example, mdadm has lots and lots of optional command line switches. Because of how many long form options mdadm has, very few can be a single letter and still have each option be unique.

I'm sure I've got the details wrong and @scottalanmiller will pipe in sometime soon.

      Will | in very soon?

One of my main concerns was the fact that Aetherstore is basically ONLY local backup. So no offsite.

I guess you could backup the mounted Aetherstore store, though. So really no different than a NAS.

      About 20 TB total

      What kind of data?

Security Camera videos, Office Data, High Res Imaging (City Planning), Marketing, Documentation, the list goes on

You take backups of security camera video?

It's body worn cameras for police 😄

      And those are backed up?

they have to be. they can be referred to for decades

Those two things are not related. Have to would be a compliance question. Being referred to for decades is about storage, probably archival, not backup.

You always discus the differences in these terms, but what @wirestyle22 mentioned would be a good thing to start a topic with and do some real world discussions.

It would be difficult because I'm still learning everything here. There are so many sites and they are all using different things. A lot of alternate configurations.

What I meant was ... something like you suggested. Not necessrily YOUR scenario, but sa smilar one.

Security footage that needs to be maintained for 10 years.

What kind of system is @scottalanmiller talking about...

So to wrap this question up...

Anything to be shared with users not on the local machine should be stored in /var and probably /var/exports

So a file structure such as

      /var/exports/HRdata
      /var/exports/XObackups
      /var/exports/userhomefolders
      /var/exports/sharedDOCS

Would be what you are expecting to see on a Linux file server....?

Yes, that would be a very good approach.

      Thanks!

Hope it was a good question.

I found out why my A2 was slow.

They throttled me for some reason.

No explanation of why, other than "overuse of resources" ... which seems to have occurred once for like a minute.

We get like 4 visitors a month to our site.

Looks like A2 is going to be another hosting company to be thrown on the scrap pile...
