    • RE: Backing up OneDrive for Business

There are some third party solutions for this.

Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't more, and that MS itself doens't offer such a thing.

Some, like @scottalanmiller, will say to only use ODfB in aware applications, so then you do not have to worry about ransomware.

      Everything is a tradeoff...

      Easier than CentOS and Fedora?

My experience has the updates always asking odd questions I don't see on other distributions.

Yeah, I find Ubuntu updates much more work and less obvious than any other. Poor updates is actually one of my complaints about it.

Unlike CentOS, RHEL, Fedora... Ubuntu requires two steps instead of one for normal update and it leaves all kinds of crap behind and when you use its tools to clean that up it breaks a bit too often. And I'm not sure how automation is easier, that's what I'm wondering about because automation on non-Ubuntu is SO good.

Since I started with Ubuntu, I keep expecting there to be two steps in CentOS as well!

    • Blocking Crawlers/Bots With .htaccess

Trying to get a site running phpBB to not get crawled as much.

We had to blow away a huge list of IPs recently, which has upped traffic. But I think the issue is that IPs that were once "bad" are now good, and doing this by IP is a moving target at best.

Has anyone ever done this using .htaccess, and if so, how are you doing it?

I saw a lot of article on Google about using a list of user-agents or know IPs, but figured I'd start here with the experts first.

So, if you have a full backup of a disk image.. kick off a restore and do not power it on. Just get a VHD file. Then load up a LiveCD. Linux Mint is handy for this. Attach that VHD to the VM that has the LiveCD. Boot to Linux Mint and it will likely auto-mount the restored VHD. Now you can navigate it like a normal file system and restore individual files. Keep the LiveCD VM handy because this is a standard process for doing this kind of file restore.

If no backups, is it possible they have this?

We probably have a backup. The guy who made it is on vacation so we are waiting to hear back from him.

    • RE: O365 and backups

I've been playing with Backupify. Works pretty nicely.

I think there is a pretty good argument to @scottalanmiller's case of not needing backups. Because under what circumstance would you need them?

It's really a small percentage of things that could happen to cause you to lose your data if the system is set up right. Is it worth it? I think that's a case-by-case answer.

You might be able to force the running DC to assume all the roles. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816779(v=ws.10).aspx

Once you do this, you'll need to do a cleanup of the AD and remove the dead controller. Once all of that is done you can then bring up a new server and promote it to a DC.

Yeah I am seizing those roles right now.

So I guess the answer to my original question is basically, yes you need to do a cleanup before just installing another DC.

I've been lucky to never have to do this. Doesn't seem too terribly crazy.

@Texkonc said in Dead DC Question:

Why are you still on an ancient os? Is there an app that depends on the domain/forest functional level?

Basically because I still haven't decided which way to go moving forward.

We're a smallish company (probably wouldn't even use AD if we were starting from scratch) so I've been weighing my options. Since everything still works perfectly for what we need, there hasn't really been the pressure.

I originally found ML looking for advice on buying a couple physical servers to install Server 2012 on. I have changed my thinking on many things since then. But the consensus was to wait for Server 2016.

At some point I am either going to...
      a) just upgrade to 2016 and keep the current windows OS based system
      b) move to some sort of Samba based solution
      c) totally move to the cloud

@BRRABill What about upgrading to 7.1 or 7.2?

On the XS forums it seems like there are some bugs in 7.1 that torch the host, so I've been waiting to be sure those are fixed before upgrading.

It really seems like there are more and more issues with XS with each new updates. Starting to make me a little nervous...

@BRRABill you can DIY your own on digitalocean for $5 a month and there are some options that make it pretty simple, or you could run a LAMP or WAMP from your own connection. It's kinda a pain and then there's noone to message when you're stuff is down to fix it...

That's actually what I have been doing. (On VULTR.)

I got tired of the slow speeds with every shared host I tried. Site is blazing now.

@BRRABill So the setup its self so far hasn't seemed to difficult.

The GUI sucks though, and isn't intuitive. Adding targets is awkward, but once you've seen it, its easy enough.

Yeah, I guess installing wasn't a big deal. I ended up just using one of their preconfigured ones. (This was back in my pre-Linux days.)

I think getting it work was more my thing. I'm sure if I stayed on it I would have figured it out. The GUI is definitely terrible.

For me, the confusion comes where there is someone like me. If I am doing side work, I don't care about making the sales ... I am looking to help my client. Do I make money? Sure. But I'd prefer to make the money 100% honest than make it like every other thread on SW where the customer gets taken advantage of.
