Remember, what makes Workstation and Server on Windows different is... licensing, not code. So when outside of Windows and there is no licensing, what do people imagine could be the difference between them?

So something like this (server vs desktop) is all just marketing?

      https://www.ubuntu.com/server

Not marketing, but you are carrying over Windows-isms that aren't implied. It's just different sets of packages, nothing more. It's the same product. Install the desktop and tell it to switch to the server package list and magically, it's a server. INstall the server and tell it to install the desktop GUI and magically it is a desktop. They pre-bundle them for easier download, but that's all that it is. Adding complexity to make ex-Windows people not freak out but how easy Linux is.

As has been discussed many times, it is hard not to when coming from the Windows world.

Knowing security updates won't break config files for one.

I have not had any issues with this on Linux in a long time.

Debian/Ubuntu/Mint (all the same base) are the only major system that feels the need to replace config files on you. If you're doing updates via 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y', it actually stops to ask you about replacing config files. Something that just doesn't happen on RedHat/CentOS.

Yeah ... should I replace it with mine, the distributor's copy, or 4 other options, right?

      LOL.

Dustin, if you have a VPN connection or are willing to publish a VM to the internet, you can host your controller on the internet and control all locations from a single controller.

@jaredbusch has a single controller running something like a dozen clients, and it can easily handle many more than that. In the controller, each client is it's own "site."

Must say, it is pretty awesome.

@MattSpeller said in Backups - how much does backup performance matter to you?:

      Quantity of data to backup

Time slot (in hours) backups require

Add in "wiggle room" as you see fit (ie, backup done in 2/3 of the timeslot to allow for growth / dumb shit)

Select appropriate backup flavor combination as per the above

      Success.

      Edit: useful tool

      http://www.calctool.org/CALC/prof/computing/transfer_time

Right, but say your backup takes 4 hours, and you have 8. WOuld you ever pay for it to be "faster", and for what/why?

well... as per the above, if I thought that 1/2 my time window was acceptable, then no. If 1/2 my time window was unacceptably slow, then yes.

Except if half the time window was acceptable, then that wasn't the time window. THe window itself tells you what is acceptable.

Right, it is what it is.

And as you always say, never buy for the future.

      @Tim_G

RIght, that is kind of my point.

It's not feasible for me as a SOHO/SMB, but for many it might be.

A lot of times teeny companies think they need to be up 24/7 without downtime without realizing the cost.

If there are mission critical applications, perhaps they need live replication, or something such as that.

I think to allow people to have easy access to what are believed to be real reviews of USB-C things so they can find valid working things.

So much of the junk coming out of China is just that junk. Either mislabeled or poorly made and just don't work to the required specifications.

Benson Leung of Google has taken a personal interest in this, and regularly buys most if not all USB-C things listed on Amazon, then makes full reviews about the product with regards to how well it works to the USB-C spec.

Benson has found and made reviews about several devices that would blow up your personal device if you used it in a specific, though valid, way.

With that detail, the link above makes more sense.

next time, post that with the link.

Yeah @Dashrender get with the program.

Why do you want a GUI? What's the end goal?

I'm guessing his goal is to not have to learn CLI commands.

You always state proximates for other people when I'm trying to find goals.

No. In fact my only option is my SR location.

Probably since the USB is having issues, maybe you can't back up the metadata?

    • RE: xenserver error fsck

      Yeah I would definitely try...

      1. booting from your cloned USB
      2. reinstalling XS and recreating your VMs by hand as Dash has suggested
      3. doing a restore

      In that order.

I played with XS a lot moving the boot drive and stuff and it was pretty resilient.

@scottalanmiller Alternatively you can install XS6.5 on the smaller partition and then upgrade.

      This however has downfalls.

There is also a way to install XS7 on a smaller partition, but Citrix does not recommend it.

AND WE KNOW TO FOLLOW WHAT THEY WANT! 😉
