It can't be. Thin provisioning in XS is ext3 and thick is LVM. It's not that they are doing thin on ext3, it's that the terms are used interchangeably. Thin is a code name for ext3, thick is a code name for LVM. The act of mounting LVM makes it thick.

Can you explain this a little more?

I am confused in that other systems use thin provisioning. (Such as you can do in Hyper-V.)

      Isn't 2TB the max size of ext3?

      I thought we found it's 16 TB

Ah, I was thinking of file size.

I think the max file size is 2TB maybe?

Which might also explain things since the VHD can't be larger than 2GB.

The file system LVM doesn't support thin provisioning, simply.

      It does. lvcreate -L +5G -T does a 5 GB thin provisioned.

Yeah that article I posted made it seem like it was possible...

And that was kind of my line of questioning of this...that other systems (such as Hyper-V) support thin provisioning. It is a technology, not EXT.

      @scottalanmiller said in Azure Migration:

If that is correct, then you need a tool like StorageCraft or Veeam Endpoint Protection that will do an agent-based full system backup of the VM from inside of the VM itself. Then use that to restore to the new VM.

It funny how I used to not "like" this method when I was new to VMs.

      Now, it's awesome! 🙂

I've never had a bad experience with the import / export speeds of XenServer 6.5 or 7 as of yet.

Just the other day I had to create a full backup of a VM with 6.5TB of vdi and it completed in 16.5 hours.

      So that's what 126Gb/s?

I think the biggest bottleneck people are having is the underlying source and target storage speeds. In the topic you posted @Danp it seems they are backing up to a tiny RAID5 array with 7200 rpm drives.

I was backing up SSD to SSD.

And what kind of performance did you have?

Was this XenServer to XenServer or XenServer to NAS, or something else?

It was XS to XS over a GB switch. I forget what the speeds were exactly, but they were slooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I could try and find it here on the forum. We posted about it extensively. (@Dashrender had similar issues.)

I've gone from XenServer to a VM on a separate XenServer installation, across multiple switches, and still have had great performance.

When my original setup was to a literal desktop (turned into hypervisor) OBR10 with 4 SFF 500Gb 7200 rpm drives I still was getting 30 minute backup windows using XO.

      I'm curious now if I'm the oddity... . .

      It seems hit or miss.

@olivier has had good success in his lab, but also understands
      a) it happens and
      b) even his performance can be improved

But "it happens" isn't a reliable approach to fixing the issue. I've never seen it act so slow, in the past year and a half. So it has never happened to me.

The speed performance has always been an "XS problem" from what @olivier has said IIRC.

So maybe he means he could have a better development lab to work with is what he means?

He is part of the group testing it on the bug tracker, and reporting his speeds. So I am assuming he is also seeing performance increases.

He's also super psyched they are fixing it.

Or... learn to work in UTC like the rest of us 😉

Or build your own Graylog server and it doesn't have this issue.

Is there any specific reason for using UTC?

Because it never has a daylight saving problem, it's standard and universal, every system uses it identically, and it is the only option that doesn't play favourites with a region.

So......you just add (say 5, for NY) to everything you see?

Or just work in UTC. In modern international business you always have to adjust the time. Nothing is easier than using UTC which is stable, as a base.

How do you get everyone to play along? Server support? Desktop support? Etc..

    • Odd Shaped Power Bricks and UPS

So, we got dinged by the fire department the other day for having a power strip into a UPS.

I've been doing a little research, and it appears that the UPS manufacturers themselves recommend against this. (OF course, to sell more UPSes!)

Anyway. I was wondering what setups you all have for oddly shaped power bricks that would work great in a power strip, but take up too much room in a UPS.

I really like the 5P/PX line from Eaton for pure-sine-wave units.

For me it was just a cost think.

The 5S 1500 was half the price, and that doesn't even include the network card you need to also purchase.

But of course if it doesn't work for me (which it will) the savings don't mean .... jack!
