These backups are from Windows Backup, that were sent into a VHD with the XML files.
How in the world did they get on the SR?

Dustin's more genuis than I am lol! We ran into some serioush issues with my install. So I'm gonna come back and revisit the best practices cause I untimately want to use a USB to install XS to and then have XO as a VM so it can help out with backups.
I think even @scottalanmiller has back peddled on install XS on USB. Might want to just weigh the options there
I think if you do it the way we suggest now, it's OK.
Though it is not technically supported by Citrix if you ever want support.
TBH I am still on the fence what I would do if doing things over.
The one thing is that XS is pretty easy to recover from a boot failure, as you saw first hand. (IF you have the metadata backed up which I think you did not, correct?)
@Dashrender said in How to recover system image from Windows 7 using the backup & restore app:
@scottalanmiller constantly says that vendors can't refuse support to you when you have third party HDDs and RAM installed in their servers.
So I don't really see this being that different. Is it possible they could refuse you? Sure, likely, doesn't seem likely.
Well, they can't REFUSE you, but they can easily say "yeah, this is all caused by you writing to USB" or "yeah, this is caused by those EDGE drives"
I think he meant installing the OS to USB.
Also, you never answered the question @Dashrender asked. We have a bet on your answer.

Can we pick this discussion back up?
Maybe explain what you meant by:
"You have to copy what there is to where you want it. If the filesystem is on /dev/sda1 you don't want /dev/sda or you are copying the partitioning layer with it."Correct. /dev/sda1 is a single partition. /dev/sda is a full device. If you dd /dev/sda, you are getting the entire device, including the partition table. If you dd /dev/sda1 you are only getting the contents of the one partition.
So...
dd /dev/sda /dev/sdb
would be what we are looking for to clone the entire USB device to anotehr blank one to allow it to be used for DR purposes?

In XC menu, there is Server, Back Up... and Server, Restore from Back Up...?
That is ONLY for backing up the host. And if you read through this thread (https://www.mangolassi.it/topic/9960/converting-to-a-virtual-environment/52) and the XS documentation, they recommend reinstalling the host as opposed to backing it up.
Kind of what @JaredBusch was saying above.

That moment when you want to restore a backup and never tested that before - just to find out that your backup is faulty.
Or that moment when you put in a tape to do a restore, and realize the previous backup job never finished, and is now erasing your tape.
(Dated history.)
That one actually got me laughing out loud. Thanks for that.
Well it's a good thing I totally TOTALLY made that one up or I'd be hurt you were laughing at my pain.
It would take forever to restore all your VMs using XO. It's obviously great for a backup, especially if you were to lose your SR.
But if the SR is still there, just reinstalling XS is the way to go. XO would not be appropriate there IMO.
@Dashrender said
Not sure what value an exported copy of the metadata is if the SR is lost - you'll be restoring the Metadata through XO restores, won't you?
I don't know either, to be honest.
But if you script it, you at least have more control over it.
The console version leaves me questioning if it really worked.
I find with most of the larger companies it falls on deaf ears.

This looks pretty interesting...
https://www.cloudhq.netIf you're using regular GMail and Regular OneDrive, it looks like it'd be free. For GApps (G Suite, ugh... I feel dirty writing that) for Work or O365 accounts, it's $10 a month.
It also works with Box, DropBox, and a few others as well.
I did see that.
I worry a little bit about third party app being involved but maybe it's just being paranoid.

Mostly because it does things for you, like logical volume creation and the file system. Them sticking with ext3 for so long has really started to hurt the platform, I think that's where the 2TB limits come in.
See? You could have talked more about this.
Stupid fire alarm.
XS smiles, nods at @scottalanmiller and slinks back into the corner.

@Dashrender Speed of backup is not related to XO. Believe me, if we could done something about that, we would do it. But there is improvements on XS7 and a new patch coming will also double or triple perfs (at least).
A new patch from you (XO) or from Citrix/Xen?
There is a thread here on ML that describes the bug, and the patching process Citrix is working on. You can subscribe to it to follow along with what they are doing. @olivier is a major piece of that.
@DustinB3403 said
Well you have a clone for the purpose of having it. Obviously it would save some time (should everything work).
But if it doesn't it would be great to know if the steps there work.
Yep.
In fact, it works so well, I have not yet even made a clone!
Shhhhh, DO NOT tell my server this.
@scottalanmiller said
Right, there is a known problem that makes XO slow because of what it uses under the hood. Use Veeam and it will be fast, I'm sure. It's not an XS speed issue. It's a XAPI call speed issue that is leveraged by XO.
It's not just XO. A lot of the people on the XS bug tracker aren't using XO. It's just a bug in exporting/importing.
