Idk. I think I'll most likely have a climate controlled shed built for me to use as a carpentry workshop.

I'm lucky enough to also have a full cabinet shop, in addition to the garage. That was worth every penny to build.

Super jealous. I think within a year we will start looking for a builder for our house. It's an exciting time.

Sure sure, until you're ready to kill the builder, your wife, and everyone involved over the so minuet things that "need a decision" and the timeline.

Yeah, so he's right. NOW is the exciting time, not when you're neck-deep in the project and ready to kill everyone. That's specifically not the exciting time. 🙂

My father in law has had both of his homes built. Trust me, he's going to be driving the builder nuts. It's going to be funny. I'm sure there will be some stress, but the builders going to be experiencing most of it. Every. Single. Thing. Must. Be. Perfect. to my father in law. It's going to be really rough for the builder.

Suggestion - when the subfloors go down.. go around yourself and put in a million more screws... my floor squeak and that sucks!

A more common practice these says is to glue and nail/screw them down. The glue takes care of the squeaking issue.

This, more screws doesn't necessarily mean more secure. They make some really nice underlayment for this type of thing too. It's a part foam part glue type of thing that comes in sheets.

How does that work over joists?

As for the glue - yeah that too would be nice, but kinda hard to add after the fact. If you have full out custom builders (or doing yourself) fine - I went with a semi custom home - glue was not an option.

Over joists is the point. Flexible (foam) adhesive. Holds the wood in place and prevents wood-on-wood creaking. The screws/nails become almost temporary fasteners to hold until the glue sets.

Glues are so crazy now that they form a better bond with wood than the wood does to itself. Pretty nuts.

      Space-Age polymers!!!

I spent the holidays with my brother, his girlfriend and my fiance`. My brother (Josh) lives in Brooklyn and has become essentially a judgmental vegan smoker which I've experienced a lot of any time I go visit him--people who do hard drugs but won't eat bread. While we were at my Grandma's I told her to turn on some music I thought she'd like and she did in fact enjoy it. Now Josh and his girlfriend unleash their inner Brooklyn and just destroy this music that everyone was enjoying. I was triggered by this situation which came to fruition apparently today.

Is it just me or did everyone forget that they like liking things? I have heard nothing but judgment about music, movies, TV shows, hobbies etc for so long it's almost normal to me now but it shouldn't be. In my opinion people who behave this way are attempting to be special or out of the ordinary and in reality they are exactly like everyone else around them. If you really want to standout nowadays you'll shop at the gap and listen to Dave Matthews Band.

It kind of reminds me of high school. I was friends with pretty much everyone but the coolest kids to me were the outcasts. I didn't realize until later that the reason I thought that was because they didn't give a shit about what the other kids thought and they were just being whoever it was that they were at the time. This is part of the reason I feel like I can't relate to people anymore because everyone my age acts like a complete idiot.

Can anyone relate to this or is it just me?

      Ugh... hipsters.

It's not even just hipsters though it's people who have adopted their judgmental mindset too. Seems like everyone my age in NJ is like this practically. I can't stand it.

You're right. Getting into a sort of recursive logic, I've had this conversation quite a few times, what seems to have happened is that people were so constantly and consistently told it was cool to be different, that they took this as "Don't like something that someone else does" and it shows in their criticism. So they try to anti-conform to things, and what makes it funny is that this is now the standard thing to conform to- anti-conformity.

Basically they defeated their purpose by making that their purpose. But, this is just my theory based on my experience with it.

The "correct" thing to do is very eloquently summed up in the title of a 1990 song by Digital Underground: "Doowutchyalike".

Eww. You like Digital Underground? They suck! LOL 😛

      Couldn't resist.

I was referring more to the philosophy behind that song than their musical merit.

I actually never had a problem with them. It seemed too fitting to pass up.

I was thinking about this this morning. Like cosplay and comic cons. It used to be for nerds or whatever. Now it is the most mainstream conformist activity in the known universe. It's the very definition of "following the crowd".

Please write an article on cosplay best practices. Please.

Step 1: Contemplate your costume carefully.
Step 2: do something not lame instead.

Step 3: Be a really hot chick (should be step 1)

This is also filed under "reasons to attend cons" (it's a short list)

Girls do it for the attention. Guys do it because they are that geeky, and because the girls there might talk to them (but only for the attention).

Oh now you're giving the reason you're in a band 😉

Except that more often than not it's guys who pay attention to you because you're in a band. When the girls do pay attention, they do it a little more aggressively, so there's that...

I doubt it's nearly that drastic. What we buy from Amazon was previously bought from big box stores. The things I can and do buy from small local businesses will change very little if there is a local branch of Amazon to purchase from.

it's supposed to be in the 40's by Friday.

It's been a nice and balmy 75 the last day or two. Was beautiful weather for patching a leaky roof that turned into removing an entire section that had started rotting out.

I guess if you had to do it anyway, at least the weather cooperated.

Does anyone realize that every energy conversion suffers loss? It's so ridiculously laughable to me every time people fire up the electric vs. gas vehicle debate. It generally requires fossil fuels to generate electricity (on a large scale), and then you get another potential drop when converting from AC to battery DC potential electricity. There is no magical "save the planet" clause that kicks in and gives you a conversion bonus for being "green", and when you're all done wasting energy to look like you've done the planet some great service, you throw your massive used-up lead-acid batteries in a landfill. Sure, technology keeps getting better, and there may come a point when we can produce all of our electricity w/o the use of fossil fuels, but until that actually happens in the real world, physics renders the argument invalid. I'll accept that using solar panels to generate the power to charge your car is a step in the right direction, but now you've added another layer of toxic batteries to the chain. And my 3 cars average about 350-400 miles per tank of gas, at roughly 25-30 mpg.

@Dashrender Right - so we have a problem with how we generate electricity. Not electric cars.

That was my entire point. Today's electric cars have not yet overcome the issue. They will likely be the better option in the future, but they are not today.

@art_of_shred I think the point is completely lost in there. Electric vehicles are the future and they will be much better for the environment. While today's technology may not be perfect that is how we humans progress - one step at a time. It sounds like you are arguing that we shouldn't bother and just continue our destructive ways. That is not progressing anything.

Plus they are WAY quicker than a gas car!

OMG, a Tesla when the pedal gets pushed all the way down is like going over the big hill on a rollercoaster. Literally experienced that exact sensation riding in one in California in 2013 when I visited Pertino with @scottalanmiller and @Nick42

Nothing a gas powered car can't do, but not likely as efficiently as an electric.

Definitely not as efficient - or really even possible without a HUGE engine, etc, etc... power to mass ratio and all. Also electric has all of it's torque at zero RPM, pretty big difference.

Technically correct, but try going down a dragstrip in an 8 second alcohol-burning car. Your Tesla is no match for that power.

Well, lo, and behold her mexican pizza, for lack of a better word, began to swell, and it made contact with the top flames (gas oven) and caught fire, lol. She opened the oven and I was like: Is that a fire?"

Well yeah, but it's the best kind of addiction, and an awesome result is people tend to avoid you first thing in the morning
