My neighbors smoke detector seems to have a malfunction, keeps beeping every few minutes... Would really like to get some sleep, just past midnight here.
We have sound pollution laws in much of the US to protect against that. If you can't sleep from that, we get to call the police.
It is not the house alarm he is referring to, it is the smoke detector random beeps of low batteries.
Probably
Apt walls must be thin.
Germany: Bricks/concrete and insulation, generally 24cm to 30cm+ thick here
If it is an apartment, call maintenance and have them go replace the batteries for your neighboor.
It's on the other side of the street, not the same house.
Open windows??

Had my first welding experience and built a stand for an old grill body to use as a fire pit. My first welds aren't pretty,.. but they are solid and will hold.
Rather impressed that I only burned a hole in one spot,.. and was able to (with guidance) fill it back in.
That's cool. I've done welding and brazing but I totally suck at both. What material did you weld and what kind of welding did you do?
Not sure the steel content,.. but some retired heavy duty shelving units - and gasless MIG. He also as a stick welder, but this was faster and simpler. It was commented of all the students my Father in law has had, those were some of the best first welds he has seen. He taught AG Mechanics for years, so he knows a bit about all welding..
What is gasless MIG welding? MIG = Metal Inert Gas.

That's not even the bad part. It's the no backups. If it isn't backed up, it's not important. Actions speak louder than complaints.
C'mon. How much text did you expect me to include?

why are you boned?
By the dictum of "blame the messenger"... if these files fail to copy, it will surely be my fault that they hadn't been backed up anytime for over a decade before I worked here.
Dictum: what the guy just did who handed this to Phil.

The messenger was the guy bringing you the laptop. Be mad at him. Ask him why he classified them as "worthless files." Don't give him time to blame you, be upset now.
I'm just going to copy the files and go on about my day. The laptop is a Dell Precision, so it's a tank. The data is in no real jeopardy except that it has no backup copies to take its place. Soon, that will be rectified.
Rectified: the name for what would happen if that guy handed that XP laptop to me. Use your imagination...

Whoa, how old is Ellen if PSX was that young?
I think this is a younger PSX sent to the future from the past for our entertainment.
And he has a twin brother. They were on America's Got Talent this year. Imagine that. So, someone from the future went back to when PSX was 10, cloned him, and brought both of them to 2016 for our entertainment.

Who/what is PSX...?
My doppelganger, apparently....
Not exactly, though there are noticeable similarities.

Winter Prep this week-end, putting lawn furniture away, getting the snow blower out of the shed and tuned up, putting the "summer" toys away, What fun!
EWWW. We have gotten the Pellet stove ready for the season and are now working on the boiler (by we I mean @art_of_shred) outside stuff is all ready set for the year. Last thing to do is put away the Camero.
Did a double take the other day, had another Camero that had the exact same paint job pull out behind my little Aveo...... I felt bad that the Camero had to follow me
Why? Aveos are awesome!
I was spoiled by driving a VW Cabrio (Convertible Jetta for our German friends), that was geared properly for a 99HP motor. The Aveo does have a well laid out interior, but the gearing is terrible. I'd rather drive something made to be on the Autobahn.
Ugh, can't agree with you more. The Aveo had a great clutch but anything over 45 was tough even at the highest gear.
I hate to be contrary, but I always thought the Aveo was a complete POS car. The Sonic was a huge improvement to replace that thing. I never even considered the Aveo to be an actual car. Not sure what I would call it, but nothing I'd ever be caught driving!

I don't know... it was super inexpensive, at one point holding the title for least expensive vehicle in the US. got decent, not great, gas mileage, handled well in the snow. Overall it was a decent vehicle with some minor flaws. Although if I had ever gotten in to an accident I probably wouldn't have survived.
If you ignore the tendency of the motors to just stop working. Don't know about snow yet, but it doesn't handle any better than the Cobalt I had before.

Nintendo hasn't had a good console since the SNES in my opinion. The N64 was better than anything since then, but was nothing but a gimmick, the SNES era was the last time that Nintendo bothered to care about making good games. Everything past the SNES has been dependent on gimmicks to sell what are otherwise absolute garbage games.
Well, next month you can get the classic NES console!

Oh, so it's not because you realized you were the only one in a "furry" costume at the party? That's good.

It's easy to defraud the system - no requirement to provide ID, because somehow requiring ID is a tax on the poor. though I'm not sure how you even have a job if you don't have an ID? oh yeah, illegal/under the table jobs.
IDs should be free and universal. Only legit way for them to work.
I have a hard time disagreeing with this. Pretty much anything the government requires you to have, should be paid for by the government - but that's not a blank check for the government to just start requiring anything/everything and just tax the crap out of us to pay for it. I am not saying that!
Slippery slope, there.
Which is why we call that a logical fallacy. It prevents us from having a reasonable discussion when people immediately assume the worst.
When government is at the helm, only an idiot would not assume the worst. It's the only thing they know how to do consistently.

No more than anything else.. but no less either.
Actually less than the current situation. It's slipperier now.
I think the point was missed. The "slippery slope" is that once you create the precedent that it's okay to tax to offer "free stuff to everyone", it can quickly become an open door to tax more and more, as long as the money goes to give something to everyone. That's scary. There is an awful lot of stuff that someone can "justify" as important for everyone, and then we all have to pay for it.
