No, just trying to pressure the customers into spending a lot when nearly free fixes are under their noses. He doesn't want to give up any bargaining chips, even if it wastes money, violates PCI, or puts the customer at risk.

It's best for you business. There is no "as well". It's doing bad by the customer so that you can make more money. That's legal, as long as its honest. If you were to repeat what he told you to the customer, then it would be illegal because that's false information. But if you just honestly tell them that you don't support that so that you can make more money, then it is completely legal to do.
But it's not good for the customer in any way. It's treating them like crap to make a quick buck.

Dude we still have sites that Refuse to upgrade with windows xp - Literally had a conversation with someone last week that was still running xp back office - it went "You know you need to upgrade.. right?" and he said "Im not ready to make that investment" - I stopped and looked at him and said " are you serious? you've had this for 15 years. it has maybe 2 years left maybe not to mention you aren't getting support on this. IDK what you're thinking but this is costing you more money then it's worth"
to which he said " So be it, Im not ready for that investment. Fix this so i can go to dinner with my family, Im starving. and I'll be talking to your boss."Yeah you got involved when you shouldn't have, we've already discussed this. It's not your cat to skin, just jump when your told to jump and don't do anything else.
Im tired of that mindset. i've had it for way to long.
Until you work somewhere where the rules are "do a good job for the customer", you need to keep that mindset.

That's just it, your boss wants to force customers to pay way more money every few years or whatever length of time, rather than the cheaper, just upgrade whenever upgrades are freely available. Your business would get to charge for those hours upgrading.
So what your boss is actually saying is he likes making less money over the longer term, than maintaining a continual flow of revenue by upgrading customers.
Of which you could of course take backups of everything any client has at the block level and restore in-full the environment if something went sideways.

You could reword this to say "we don't provide support". Basically, if you've not tested the same thing in house, you don't provide support. Since you don't have this happening in house, there is no way to deal with the problem.

And also according to you and your boss. This isn't something I made up, it's something I read you saying. He demanded you not provide rational, affordable, working support... period. It's that simple.
Don't pull the "according to me" thing. He told you flat out to not provide obvious support because that's not something you do.

Here is an easy mental test... imagine that the customer was reading this thread. Would they feel that they were getting protected or screwed by your boss telling you to not properly update and support their existing systems. Telling you to avoid the expected fix that is free. And finding out that their systems were a decade out of updates not because they didn't pay for them already, but because their IT team that they pay to support them intentionally held back the updates so that they could charge more later!
If I were a customer and paid for IT support and found out what the boss was saying, I'd have my lawyer contacting them because this actually crosses some legal boundaries. Intentional PCI violations, professional negligence, and falsification of information, and almost certain contractual violation.

This was what I was going to say.
Why put yourself at risk of losing your income because you want to help the customer the job is to make as much possible money as you can by doing the most convoluted and lengthy things possible and charge the customer for every minute of the bad for the customer decision.

This was what I was going to say.
Why put yourself at risk of losing your income because you want to help the customer the job is to make as much possible money as you can by doing the most convoluted and lengthy things possible and charge the customer for every minute of the bad for the customer decision.
The only good option is....
Keep your head down, do as your are told, and leave the instant any option becomes available. You aren't learning there, they are actively lying to you and teaching you things that aren't true. It's bad for your career (compared to most IT jobs, but good compared to a gap on the resume), nor for your education, nor for your mental health. But the most important thing is internalizing that these are really unethical people and every interaction is the same.... they aren't doing right by the customers.
So until you are able to move on, just do as you are told and don't consider the needs of the customers or good IT at all. But be actively looking and leave the moment you can.
Whatever you do, don't be AJ and try to force changes or do the "right thing" in a company that has no interest in that.

There has been a bit of his bosses convincing him that there are opportunities for him at the company and trying to get him to believe that they have logic behind things that they do. He knows it is not the best job, but is often left unsure how unethical they are and how little viable future that there is there ( a company that will screw customers will screw employees just the same.) Bad people are bad people.
Just in uncovering how bad his bosses are in this thread has lead to a significant amount of both business and technical discovery. So while it might seem like beating a dead horse to those that instantly see that the company is crooked, it's not for him because he's young and hasn't been at as many jobs to realize or have had exposed to him how out of whack this behaviour is. There is still a lot to be figured out here.
Unfortunately, not likely much for the underlying technical issue that prompted the discussion.

Start an AWS lab and with the AWS foundation cets and or O365. Get into the cloud space. Even help desk seems better than this.

Because you've defended them and when you repeat them lying you do so as if you are wondering if the lie is valid instead of just saying "my boss made up a blatant lie" or "I'm sure this is a lie but..."
When you repeat a lie and don't point out it is a lie, it essentially requires a discussion about why the quote isn't factual.

I think we are past it, it's @WrCombs who isn't, and feels he should continue to push the better for the customer alternative when his boss has explicitly told him to not do that.
@WrCombs it may feel like we're bashing you, but instead we're telling you to simply do as your told, keep your resume up to date and find a job that makes you happy. You aren't in a position to truly help the customer.

Right, he wants to leave. But not badly enough. That's why these threads matter. He has bosses above him that try to convince him that they aren't as bad as they are. He's trapped there for now, he can't just leave. If he was free to relocate we had a job for him two weeks ago that would have been a zero discussion "here's your new job" situation. But he couldn't take it. He's in a terrible market without a lot of experience.
But he needs to internalize just how bad these people are and how important it is for his long term career growth to be really aggressive in trying to escape.

Right, what we are trying to do is...
- Show you the technical answers so that you can grow on the IT side. If we didn't do that, how would you learn the parts that help you get another job?
- Show you what your company is really like, because they are trying to convince you that what they are doing is okay.
- Show you how best to behave within the organization given what kind of organization they are so that you get in the least trouble and keep your job.
- Demonstrate how important it is to keep focused on finding another job ASAP not just because this one is crap, but because crap jobs hold you back long term because you don't grow at the pace that you should.
We are advocating for you, but in many directions at once.
