First rule of not knowing.... don't set the parameters. Your real goal here is "AppleTV alternative because... X, Y and Z", which is totally different than "AndroidTV for no reason."
It's like if you don't like macOS, you don't say "I need Windows", you say "I need something other than macOS, what should I try?" Because while Windows is one possibility, it's just one and if you don't know the range of options, randomly choosing just that one thing is likely to be a bad choice.

Agreed - what is it about apple TV you don't like?
I have both a roku and Amazon FIre TV, I use the Fire 95% of the time.
I've never found "searching" to work with any of these platforms, unless I know exactly what I want, but even then I often find a paywall in the way, but that's not generally an issue of roku vs AFS, it is the services you have...

I've had all four (AndroidTV, FireTV, AppleTV and Roku.) Moving to AppleTV and Roku as the only two going forward. FireTV was better than AndroidTV, but found it too slow and buggy, too. AppleTV is far from perfect, but I'm leaning towards it because it has some nice additional features now.

can anyone suggest an android tv box I can plug into the TV? nothing expensive, just something that works. just for streaming services.
why android TV?
because I don't know what i'm doing?
we got an apple tv but it's not very useful, it makes searching through things too hard.
enlighten me.
Roku works well and start at $35

Apple airplay is a decent feature if you're an Apple user.

last I heard, Scott left the apple eco system - but even that's no longer true, since he just recently picked up an apple M1 desktop...

I concur on the Fire TV it seems very slow. We use Roku and so far no major issues. I haven't use Apple TV in a few years now but may be worth a second look. Sister in law picked up a Tivo Stream which is Android based, seems overpriced for what it offers and no integration with existing Tivo DVR boxes.

I wonder what Amazon devices you are using? Don't get me wrong, my AFS has glitches... but the latest one I bought (in Nov 2019 I think) does the job pretty well.
I have a Roku as well, from 2018 I think... it's fine, I love the fact that they have a native Vudu app (had to side load a knockoff on AFS).
I've loved my AFS though because they released a remote with TV power and sound buttons - one remote to rule them all!
But apparently I missed the fact that Roku did the same in Nov 2017 - it's time to get a new Roku I think.

yeah, Roku is super solid.

I've had three, none were terrible, none were great. Very slow and glitchy.

I replaced an old Apple TV with Roku so I could watch Daily Wire content. Roku has been solid.

Big fan of Roku as we have four of them. The only thing that ticks me off about them, then and now, is that they don't have a Bluetooth transmitter. Unless I missed it somewhere.

And I'm going back to the phone. Had a great Android experience, no complaints (other than Samsung Bixby is BS), but the OnePlus has been fantastic. But iPhone has the Mini again and that's what I want. So that's my next phone, someday.
I never left the iPad world, a huge dog just jumped on my old iPad Air and shattered it.
