My question is, should I also run backup agents (I use Veeam), on the Hyper-V environments and back them up as if they were physical boxes? Or is the daily backup fine.

General practice is to not back up the host itself. You should have a process to rebuild the host and, in theory, this should be incredibly fast and simple. Since restoring bare metal is always a pain because you have to get the restore going without an agent, rebuilding a nearly stateless host is generally faster and simpler and doesn't require storage and management.

Otherwise, unless you can get a direct 1gb or 10gb network connection, backup times will suck.

Just an FYI, this also may completely depend on your backup software too.

But if using a software backup appliance such as unitrends on a VM, you'd want to have the storage local to the Unitrends VM for example.

Veeam DOES recommended avoiding low end NAS devices, and recommends SAN over NAS because Veeam wants block protocols. These parts are true and we don't need to watch videos as they are available in writing from @Rick-Vanover - we even have the author of the best practices here in the community!

      https://www.veeam.com/blog/vmware-backup-repository-configuration-best-practices.html

      0_1501712220659_Screenshot from 2017-08-02 17-16-46.png

The keys here are "low end" which is an issue around support. The misleading bit is that NAS means server, so low end servers are every bit affected in the same ways. The QNAP, Synology, ReadyNAS and other such devices are not actually NAS but Unified Storage, SAN as much as NAS. That Veeam recommends SAN instead of NAS is a protocol choice, it does not make those devices any less applicable. We should not be calling them NAS, as that is misleading, they are equally both.

If we really look at the guidance and consider what it could mean, the only real concern is "low end" and low end is always of some concern. Why spend so much on Veeam and Windows licensing and then get cheap on the hardware? You want solid storage hardware and solid support. But nothing here is telling us that there is anything wrong at all with these kinds of devices and certainly the issue is not some kind of corruption caused by the fact that they are in this product category.

      About 20 TB total

      What kind of data?

Security Camera videos, Office Data, High Res Imaging (City Planning), Marketing, Documentation, the list goes on

You take backups of security camera video?

It's body worn cameras for police 😄

      And those are backed up?

they have to be. they can be referred to for decades

Those two things are not related. Have to would be a compliance question. Being referred to for decades is about storage, probably archival, not backup.

You always discus the differences in these terms, but what @wirestyle22 mentioned would be a good thing to start a topic with and do some real world discussions.

It would be difficult because I'm still learning everything here. There are so many sites and they are all using different things. A lot of alternate configurations.

What I meant was ... something like you suggested. Not necessrily YOUR scenario, but sa smilar one.

Security footage that needs to be maintained for 10 years.

What kind of system is @scottalanmiller talking about...

It's true that you can make stateless systems without DevOps tooling and approaches. But the nature and assumptions of those systems is that you cannot. Just letting arbitrary logins (even of administrators) can undermine that. One of the beauties of the pure DevOps model is the lack of logins. Much like functional programming.

Do you know files can't be restored? Maybe there is a way to do it outside the normal ways. Who knows? I have not officially asked about that.

      /blink

Umm, if the backup repository is unavailable for backup, how in the hell would it be available for a restore?

What Synology has done, to make this claim kinda legit, is look at what disks "can" stream (which is more than is listed here) and added the "cap" of the network. So if you do a contrived operation that pushes the drives to their throughput limit (a useless number hence why we don't measure drives by that metric) but tells us nothing about performance. That could be just two or three IOPS producing that limit. But in the real world, that's not useful.

I set this up a year ago after @IRJ first mentioned Updraft. works great.

It is definitely the best free WP backup I have found. I like the fact that it just zips the files so you aren't even dependent on Updraft Plus if you need to restore.

      @Dashrender said in KVM Backups:

You're right.. I have to keep reminding myself of that. But SMB's don't want to be chasing down dozens of little pieces all over the place to make these pieces work.

It's one thing or a larger company to have a team who's job it is to do just that - Scott's been talking about using Xen for decade plus. I have to assume that Scott the one man who is equal to nearly 10 normal mortals, has managed to collect and put together all of those parts.

The simplicity of XS and XO are what really give Xen any teeth in the SMB market, a la Windows style, everything in one place.

The bad thing about these groupings though, as we found out with the use of VHDs in XS, are the limitations those packages place upon us.

This is exactly correct. They want some hardware on-site (if they can't move to public cloud for some good reason) and they want somebody who owns the hardware also babysit it. Playing LEGO game with hardware and software isn't what most of the people can do EASILY (and one of the proves I'm right is why products like vRanger and AppAss still exist).
