I use Nextcloud for my personal storage solution.

But in the past my storage space was more limited and I elected to pay for an iCloud subscription for photo storage.

I always meant to deal with this in a more permanent way as I know anything on iCloud is not mine and is not backed up.

Well now I have to deal with it as my iCloud storage is nearly full.

So no I need to know what would be the best method to get my images downloaded from iCloud and then moved where I want them (Nextcloud) and then purged from iCloud.

I have about 75GB stored in "Photos" on iCloud.

iCloud Photos for Windows (assuming that you don't have a Mac around, which I don't think that you do) is probably the easiest. Do a one time download to your PC, and one time upload to your NC.

Well I could make a Windows VM for the purpose, but I would rather not.

Seriously though, how big is your iPhone?
Can you download them there and then sync your camera roll etc to NC?

                    In theory

No way to do that on the iPhone itself.

The iCloud web interface will let you select and then download as a zip.

But there is no simply way that I see to only select by a date range.

That said it may be the best option. I'm testing.

Web interface leaves much to be desired, but it seems workable.

You have to swithc to "Photos" form "Moments" and then you have to manually scroll to find the photos you want selected (I want 2015 for example). and then select them all carefully.

                                  Finally, you can download.

Have you tried the linux Icloud Photo downloader?

                                          https://github.com/ndbroadbent/icloud_photos_downloader

Or installing Icloud for Linux and then mounting the photo space?
                                          sudo snap install icloud-for-linux

If I recall, the drive folder is here, photos can't be too terribly different
                                          ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/
