@WrCombs Yup. You can provision the AP using it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles the controller does, but it does most of what you want in a home network AP

I'll have to look into it.

Would you suggest Standalone mode then for at home use?

That all depends. With controller, you still need a controller. Stand alone means you no longer have to run one. These are the pros and cons of each according to that link-

For home use, stand alone is normally fine. But as wrx says, it is limited.

FYI - if you go the controller route, you only need the controller online to update the APs or if you're using a captive portal. There might be a few more cases where it needs to always be online, but these wouldn't be typical for a home use case.

TL;DTR - controller is really only needed for setup, and updating.

If you had automatic backups setup you should totally be able to plug the old hard drive in and grab the latest backup (I think they're enabled by default?). I've done this a few times in the past.

So I went home and downloaded the Unifi Mobile app.

Tried to connect to my existing controller but none were found.

Because that laptop died and the controller isn't running?

                          Yeah, Probably.

How do I build a new controller? just on my phone or do I need to build it on the computer and sync to my phone?
I never saw that in the Link wrx gave me

@WrCombs Do you have a windows laptop? If you want to just start from scratch install the controller and follow the directions.

If you have no other access points, then you will likely need to run the discovery app on a computer.

I wouldn't do that either. For a home with no infrastructure, I would run it only from the app.

Using UniFi without any infrastructure is honestly stupid though.

@WrCombs - did you reset the AP before using the AP? If no, that's why you couldn't find it.

Also, I'm not sure if the app can find an AP via non associated wifi or not - I'm guessing it must be able to, as home users wouldn't typically have a way for their cell phone to be attached to the physical network since you're just now trying to install wifi in the home.
