What Are You Doing Right Now

@Dashrender As far as two projects. It would be 1. Dump T1 and transition to SIP using existing hardware. 2. Replace hardware. The harder of the two projects will be dumping the T1.

I have a thread around here some where a few months ago where I looked at the cost of ripping out my Mitel system and replacing it with FreePBX and Yeahlink phones - it was more cost effective for a few reasons.
- current phone system is serving all needs
- replacing current system vs updating already completely paid for system was $12K more.
Even Scott agreed that because of the spent money already in place, that keeping my current system was likely the better move.
These are some of the problems I see with keeping the on-premises Altigen system.
- Special licensing is required to used non-Altigen phones.
- Actually purchasing Altigen phones is becoming more and more difficult as I believe Altigen doesn't make them anymore.
- The actual hardware is an Altigen appliance that has aging hardware and is running 32-bit Windows 7 ultimate.
I'll look for your thread though.
-
I've had Altigen before. It truly sucks.

Part of the difference is that he has fairly decent SIP trunk pricing already. So the RoI on switching only hardware is very low comparatively.
Granted it is a shitty SIP trunk.

The system hasn't been terrible, but it's not flexible, and also we need to get away from hosting this PBX on premises. The hosted Altigen solutions I looked at a year ago when this project was first born were 2x to 3x more expensive than FreePBX hosted somewhere with a SIP provider.

What? Switching the SIP has nothing to do with the hardware? Unless a hardware/software purchase to support SIP is required. Now @EddieJennings did say he'd need a new license to support it, so that is definitely a factor.

That's all? only 2-3x as much? Hosting a FreePBX costs like $6/month from Vultr. If hosting your Altigen only costs $12-18/month, that will take a lot of savings to climb over the cost of new phones for a FreePBX system.

WTF are you talking about?
My comment was directly pointing out that you already have a (shitty) SIP provider that gives a better cost than legacy POTS/PRI services, and because of that you have a very low ROI in switching hardware along with changing SIP providers.
Of course changing hardware alone will never have any ROI. It is an expense. The ROI is based on the entire project.

From what I recall, Altigen was something like $20 / seat / month. Also we have a couple of hundred folks who are virtual extensions who basically only have a mailbox. There is a desire for these folks to start making calls, which for Altigen, would create another "seat."
