@travisdh1 finally someone who actually knows what a pizza box is in IT!
OK this begs for an explanation.
Those look like 1U SPARC servers. I believe the old people called them pizza boxes because they have a similar size to them. That was colloquially re-termed to mean any 1U server.
Those are neither 1U nor servers, they are desktops. ANd they are the only IT item that can be called a pizza box. They have been the pizza box spoken of in IT for decades.

Those are desktops? Didn't know that, generally when I hear a pizza box it refers to 1U servers.

That form factor of Sparc desktop, the SParcstation, was known in IT as "the pizzabox." Going on a quarter century now.

That's the "doesn't know what a pizza box" problem that I was referring to. 1U servers are not pizza boxes, they are not square. THat's a new thing that people who don't know Sparcstations, but have overheard people use the term, mistakenly call them now. A 1U should never be called a pizza box.

This seems like IT elitism for the sake of elitism. Sure the original pizzabox was the Sparcstation - the second gen pizzabox was a 1U rackmount server.

It was a nickname for the shape of it. I think SGI had a box nicknamed the toaster around that same time.
Yes they did, the O2. I've been very tempted to try picking up a working model on ebay.
Some old school stuff right there.
Yep. Those SGI toaster boxes just keep on ticking when a lot of their other IRIX workstations have long since bit the dust. Really sad, I liked those workstations a lot. One of their demo apps was a globe like what Google Earth/Maps does today, back in the mid 90s.
-
We used them for our CAD program back in the day designing tools for presses that made Spark plug electrodes, Diesel engine injector sleeves, gears for the mini car

@hobbit666 I used to manage them regularly. I managed actual pizza boxes in the early 1990s in academia (yes, mostly CAD stuff) and later around 2000 in manufacturing. I know someone in California still using the same pizzaboxes that I had for manufacturing. I know both in manufacturing and in finance these are still in use today, so the term remains not just relevant, but current. And I believe that NTG has one for the museum as well.

I've been managing pizza boxes for about 29 years.... gotta remember to close the lid to make sure it doesn't get cold to fast...

Are they using an updated version, or a 25+ year old machine?
I'd wager a guess that it's the 25 year old machine. We're talking about manufacturing here...
So, does the use of a 25 year old CAT scan machine mean they are using current equipment? lol
And to think that you just got chewed out for wanting to look into details of Server 2003...
Holy shit, you're right LOL
Oh, I'd fire the guys who set this up. There is no reason that they are stuck on the pizzabox except that no one maintained the app. The app will run perfectly well and brand new gear that you could buy off of the shelf today. They just lost their installer and don't know the product and ignore it. I know that the shop that has it now can't even take a backup of it and when the HD dies, the whole thing is a multi-million dollar hung of metal.

Except it was in the middle of a thread so now the contents are all over the place.

yeah... that whole thing from this morning should be in this thread.

That is why I told them a long time ago that they have to lock a damned thread prior to forking. that way no new posts can go in it until they are done.
