What Are You Doing Right Now

Seeing pictures coming in of The Force Awakens opening night.
Lots of cosplay. It'll be nice to see it eventually but I may end up waiting for the blu-ray.I don't like movie theaters as much as I used to.

Going to see it tomorrow night late. Should be fun.

There are already two of these fighting over the city, why is someone proposing yet another one instead of attending the ones that are already there!!!

Buffalo is active, though. The region and SW just keep turning it down.

Someone started a new group based in the adjoining country to St. Louis. Like our attendance numbers are ever that high to being with? .. seriously people get over yourselves and travel just a little. You know, get out and meet people outside of your own office.

I saw what you posted in there. I wish ours was active.

I would be willing to help organize some MangoBunch's

The girls just woke up and just opened their Playmobile Advent Calendar for the day.

We've seen that issue everywhere. NYC split into several groups. DFW is always trying to split. Lots and lots of groups get this "but that's twenty minutes away" mentality and don't realize that half the group is travelling an hour or more to get the small attendance that they have and that the organizers are probably doing that too!
The problem is, everyone wants their own group rather than supporting the ones that exist.

I drive 3 hours to attend (when I can). Maybe it is because I am from a very rural area.

Ha I'd be happy to support the one we have that exists if anyone did anything

Realistically, how much work is it to setup a Spicecorp/MangoBunch meeting? I don't know the amount of work that goes into, any ideas @Minion-Queen or @scottalanmiller ?
-
@coliver It's really not a ton. The biggest issues is always a place to have it. The rest is easy.

It's only easy because @Minion-Queen has unlimited access to sponsors and speakers. For people without those resources, it becomes a bit more difficult. It's easier now because many of us have been running them for years and know the processes.

This is a case where it might be wise to do somehting like what SW is now doing, where you can request assistance from HQ to get sponsors lined up for presenting at a local meeting.

That's what I was thinking... The venue I thought would be the easiest part, I assumed that getting the vendors to speak with a small group of people would be the most difficult.
-
I have a great relationship with all kinds of Vendors so getting them to come out and speak is the easy part. But places to host things is impossible. I don't work in a traditional office and most people refuse to drive outside of the city. So I can't do it at my house.

If you are trying to have a few beers with friends and not have an IT meeting, as many SC events are, then it is easy. If you want to be able to talk and have a presentation, it gets really hard really quickly.
-
The hardest is getting a venue that is both useful for people to hold a meeting but still allows the flexibility for things like alcohol to make the meeting things that people want to attend. The average venue is either a bar and useless for the first or an office that forbids the latter.
That's why in the DFW we finally settled on just using my house since I had a projection system and a full bar in it and we could handle 45 people pretty easily for a meeting and were centrally located. Every other venue either couldn't have alcohol, was expensive or could not have people hear each other or be in a group.
