@stuartjordan said in XenCenter to XCP-NG Upgrade using Bash:

I use XCP-NG but someone is using Xenserver 6.5. I'm not happy them using that old hypervisor. I'm going to export them VM's as precautionary backup anyway, But I wondered if anyone on here a successfully use the upgrade script built into XCP-NG?

I wouldn't upgrade xcp-ng from the shell. The recommended procedure is to do an upgrade using the ISO.

Partition layout is different from version 7 and up, but it will either be automatically upgraded to the new layout (if there is space) or kept the same using the old partitioning scheme.

That said, there are things to be careful about. Some old guest OS might have problems running on a newer version hypervisor. It's not just the guest OS but also the virtualization modes (HV,PVM, HVPVM etc). Some modes are not available anymore.

Another problem is that the old hardware on the server might not have drivers in the newer hypervisor. Some things have been deprecated.

Xenserver 6.5 was released January 2015. Assuming the server hardware is the same age, I would strongly consider getting a newer server and then reinstalling / moving the workloads from the old to the new server. That gives you time to move the workloads without causing disruption if you encounter problems.

Hey @Pete-S, Have you run across anything missing in doing upgrades? Honestly wondering 'cause we've got a substantial fleet of older machines that we use with xenserver. Haven't hit any situations where it falls apart, just that some of the older processors are no longer supported. Things still work OK, it's just not a supported config from Citrix anymore since the older gear isn't on the HCL for the newer release.

But to come back to the OP, if upgraded HW is an option then yeah, go that route at the same time. If it isn't an option well, there are other virt platforms that the other folks on here are better situated to help with.

@stuartjordan Assume that you mean Xen Server 6.5 (Xen Center is just the Windows management GUI). I can't speak to any scripts, and XCP-ng might have a quirk or 2 different from Citrix Xen, but you should just be able to boot the install media and for the "traditional" Citrix hypervisor there's the options for both a clean install or to upgrade the existing hypervisor without touching the VMs. Coming from 6.5, and if you can move the VMs or perform a backup/restore I'd advocate a clean install since the default partition layout has changed and you won't be able to move to it with an upgrade. Good luck!

Yep I did mean xenserver 6.5, just changed that typo. I might just backup VM's and start a fresh then if the partition structure is different.

Yeah, if you've got the means (and the time) to do a backup / restore I'd do that. The downside is the time it takes to do the whole backup/restore operation... Can't remember which version changed the partition layout for xenserver, think it was with 7 but wouldn't swear to it. It hasn't been a issue so far that I can recall but my memory isn't the best at this hour on a Friday either 😉

      Just got jab#1.

think my wife told me we've had 11 blood clots in Oz in the past 1-2 weeks!

@nadnerB may be able to correct me????

I thought that was all up… but I haven’t paid a lot of attention to what the actual number are. Just that it’s happening

Personally, risk of clots or other complications doesn't outweigh the benefits of staying alive.... And COVID vaccines are far from the only cause of clots, I don't see too many people being reluctant to travel, get pregnant or take birth control because of a risk of clots.... https://familydoctor.org/condition/blood-clots/ An interesting statistic posted by a friend shows that the risks of clotting from hormone-based birth control are many times higher than the observed rates of issues from vaccines.

Just some food for thought and some comparative context.

@jaredbusch I thought I'd figured out the magic formula as it ran clean through the huge collection that it had problems with yesterday, but it just went bork on a smaller one. Some quick google-foo looks like it's getting into trouble with multi-threading so if it continues to be a pain I might try cutting back the threads in the command or increasing the cpu allocation for the VM... Knowing how much of an impatient sob I tend to be I'll probably boost the cpu count from it's current 8 to 16 and see if that does the trick. Although from the error message that might not do anything since google-foo leads me to believe that it's the exporter that isn't cleanly releasing or closing the process thread so that another child process can be invoked.... this thing is an unholy combination of java, mssql and some other Autonomy / IDOL bits.... the exporter is a .bat file ffs

      <end rant>

Dell drivers just didn’t work on the case of the 5500...

Damn... can't say that I've run into it knock on wood. We've got a fleet of 5300 and while they have their issues, this hasn't been one of them.

I've been given the glorious task of exporting the content and metadata from a DocuShare 6.1 install and the dsexport tool has puked the last couple of times I've tried exporting a specific collection. I've kicked it off again but I was wondering if anyone here has any experience or tricks if it decides to tell me to pound sand again.

@joel Are you using the video and chipset drivers from the dell support site with the device's service tag or are you using the ones from the chipset / video vendor?

With Dell machines my go-to sequence is

      • update to the latest bios
      • run the initial driver restore in command update
      • install all available updates in command update

if you're still in trouble after that, use command configure to comb through the bios settings to see if there's anything funky

    • RE: Network Printer keeps re-adding itself

      @mr-jones

OK, so it sounds like it's back to basics time:

      • Multiple networks / segments or all on a common network
      • use something like advanced IP scanner to see if there's anything unknown on the network it's self
      • Keep in mind that printer sharing / publishing also has smb / samba in the loop, not just the print-spooler

Where I'm going with this is that there could be something publishing on the network with upnp or, zero-conf, bonjour or some other automagic protocol that your endpoints are only picking up based on one of the options (or defaults) in the GPO. The other thing to check (if not already done) is the protocols and services that are enabled on the printers themselves. Best thing is to disable all of the ones that you aren't using like bonjour, air-print, etc etc

@pete-s said in HP Switch config question:

The person who set this up would clearly know what he was doing or he wouldn't have been able to make it work.

I'm guessing it was a move in the making. The intention was probably to move over to pfsense, drop the fortigate and perhaps remove routing from the switch. It's possible the fortigate is old and can't handle routing at line speed, hence the L3 routing in the switch.

I'm guessing the fortigate and the switch was setup long before pfsense.

If the fortigate is the actual edge device, maybe this was setup as a simple way to bypass the pfsense for fussy devices or troubleshooting?

I could see setting something like this up so that you can tell a remote user "go plug it into xyz switch and let me know if it starts working"

    • RE: Network Printer keeps re-adding itself

Could it be that one (or more) of the machines that are picking up this policy are also configured to publish / share their printers and the other machines are configured to automatically map locally shared devices? Just spit-balling, but this sounds like one of those situations where there are actually a couple of issues combining instead of just 1 simple problem.

Just out of interest what are most of america's different states and Canada using in regards to internet connections? Over here in the UK we are mostly FTC now, which is copper from the property to the street cabinet then fibre to the exchange. We are still limited by distance to the cabinet in regards to what speeds we get. We also still have ADSL available, but most are not using that these days. My speed for example is now 56/10. At my old address I was right next to the cabinet and would get 70/20. Just curious if you are mostly FTTP over there.

NB Canada here. FTTH, all the way to my ERX. 100/100 for $80/mth right now but I can go up to 1.5G/940M... means that I'd have to go back to the ISP's CPE though since the ERX's WAN port is only 1G

100/100 is a good speed though, do you reckon you will upgrade the line to 1gb?

Can't say that I see a need for it at the moment. Even with everyone at home full time and the simultaneous load that causes I haven't seen the line saturate unless I'm running iperf for curiosity's sake, just to make sure that I'm getting what I'm paying for.

If anyone else needs something for IPAM / network documentation I've just fallen in love with phpipam (https://phpipam.net/)

I'd tried netbox in the past but this just seems to work better for me. You can also set up polling / discovery of the configured ranges (on a per-range basis) either from the central server or from remote agents.

Anyways, it's rare that I'll advocate for something out of the blue, but I'm almost enjoying moving our horrible excel spreadsheet documentation over to this.

      Happy Friday all 🙂

Yeah, we've been using it for a year or more. It has a nice API that @stacksofplates helped me dig into to automate DHCP reservations.

That sounds sexy.... windows server DHCP or something else?
