In the end, the degree doesn't fit the title, but the experience does.

It exactly fits it. It's a degree for exactly what he is doing. That's where I am confused.

I'm saying I consider the experience to be the determining factor, not the degree. I consider the degree to be a bonus, and a study on theory. But the experience is where I place the title; less experience being a junior sysadmin title. The current experience exactly fits, the Master's in IT is just a bonus to me but doesn't automatically qualify a higher position.

Glad to know this worked. I have had 3 different Synology NAS boxes over the past 6 years- An 1812+ that was just retired, 1813+, still going after almost 5 years and a new 3617xs and wondered what would happen if the box died. Never had any issues with any (knocking on wood).

Does Samba / Azure AD Sync allow you to Sync back passwords (and/or accounts) from O365 (to Samba)? I've never looked into that.

Never tried, but should, as it is just AD. It shouldn't be able to tell that it isn't Windows.

Well - that depends, does the sync client have to run on a Windows AD server? If not, then you probably can sync a Samba solution to Azure AD.

You can run it on any Windows server, but the problem with Samba is the password hash doesn't get sync to Azure.
      https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2016-November/204564.html

That thread is kinda old - I wonder if 4.5 fixed that?

Yeah, I've never seen the project listing outside of SW. I'm sure it's out there, but it's not something I commonly encountered until finding it on SW.

      Yeah, it's fax to E-mail.

My fax number with voip.ms is configured to send an E-mail to [email protected], which is a mail-enabled public folder. Users who would normally have access to the fax machine at work have access to the public folder. I've also granted access to our work-from-home folks. In the E-mail to fax section, I've added the E-mail addresses of everyone who should be allowed to send faxes. I also configured a security code. So they have to email [email protected] and the subject is 10DigitRecipientFaxNumber.SecurityCode.

System isn't as robust as some you can get, but for what little faxing we do it works. Looks like we has 20 faxes total last month (22 pages). Most inbound. I think the only outbound faxes were my test faxes.

So just using for inbound through voip.ms?

My experience is that if there are a few pages these kinds of services work fine. When its 20+ and especially hundreds its near impossible to get things through. Mainly in the medical field.

But still, you used to need a fax server to do fax2email so it is good to know voip.ms is offering this servie.

I'm using voip.ms for inbound and outbound.

This is something that @Bundy-Associates does.

We have a software package that does inventory, costing, general ledger, etc. It was designed and built for the manufacturing industry.

Unfortunately it is outdated IMO and needs modernized into a SaaS product.

It is fully functional, but it was designed on the old school Client-Server model with a local SQL Server database. Nothing wrong with that when it was designed. It was the norm then. It is updated and current with technology (runs on Server 2016, SQL 2017, with .NET 4.5 i need to update that to 4.7 one of these days).

It is just outdated in design philosophy.

It is a goal for our company, but we do not have the funds to redesign and we do not want to take on the debt to do so at this time.

@bigbear said in Nest Secure: Thoughts?:

I use the outdoor nest cams because the install kit and magnet is better but mostly because the software is so much better.

The alerts, zones and ability to actually catch stuff as it's happening isn't something I've been able to replicate on a non-cloud DVR. I actually catch stuff while it's happening.

I won't put a nest camera in my house though. The garage is as far as let them into my house. Used to have it in kids play room but they are too old for that now, and even then it kinda bugged em. But still, the notifications were just way more useful. Probably a result of all the data they have access too.

The Ubiquiti ones have nice zones and they can be very very sensitive or very not depending on what you want.

I tried this but it was 2014 or so with all UBNT gear. Not sure if its improved then. That was also the peak of the UBNT home/office automation/sensors gear.

Things could be better now but I would expect them to be worst given their seeming abandonment of that product line for creepy necklace cameras.

We (at Scale) have done a lot of work with Workspot for easy VDI solutions on Scale HC3. We have also done a lot of testing and validation around more traditional terminal services approaches like XenApp and Microsoft RDS. Both approaches have merit and vary in their value proposition, management, and approaches. Of course, a lot of Scale customers use the "simple" VDI approach of simply running Windows 8 or Windows 10 desktop VMs on top of their cluster and using the stock RDP options to connect to them, no special VDI products needed if you want to go that route. There are free front ends for this approach as well, we know that someone here in MangoLassi has used Guacamole, instead of RDS, as a front end connection aggregator for exactly that purpose.
