If someone in the neighborhood is using MoCA, you could put this adapter on the business' incoming cable line, before the first split or amplifier. It would block their interference. link

This won't make any difference though - because the signal has to leave the building, i.e. go where the line noise is, to get out to the rest of the world... so the problem would still be there.

That all said, even though I don't care, I'd still prefer the ISP is totally out of the loop and am for encrypted DNS.

Glad to see you come back with this.

The old adage, if ya got nothing to hide/done nothing wrong, then what do you have to worry about, Sadly, this is so not true.

I have a cradlepoint AER2200 setup with an AT&T connection at a location across town at a warehouse that gets occasional use. We were going to be using handheld wireless bar code scanners that needed connection to our ERP server. I created an IPSec tunnel to our main office and used an ACL to only limit the correct ports to the server here. Anyway, the connection has been reliable even though it doesn't get much use.

They were going to move out of that location and I was happy because I was going to use the cradlepoint in the main office as a backup, but more for out-of-band management, than for the whole company. Now we have at least another 6 months at that location, so I might end up getting a new one for here anyway. We'll see.

@scottalanmiller said in ISP Failover with Cisco ASA:

That's mostly true. But Cisco considers it real Cisco and it shows their view of themselves. And that, I always think, is important. Cisco doesn't seem themselves as an enterprise player. And I've been in sales meetings with Cisco and that definitely comes through when talking to them.

That's not what I got from my sales conversations with them. They were very explicit about real Cisco and the lesser sub-brands.

Having been at two huge banks that were burned by being willing to use UCS, Cisco and enterprise are two words I never put together. From networking to phones to servers, Cisco is consistently overpriced and underperforming.

I absolutely loved UCS, even wrote the original oVirt/RHV plugin for the VMFEX cards. They were ahead of their time with those boxes, but the cloud pretty much killed everything really cool and advanced about HW

It's not going to be good for anyone once the festivities end.

But unlike WindStream, there is a point at which eating corn dogs is nice.

Just had this email exchange today with Adams Telecom.
Note: The existing service was 50/50 with a 3 year contract at $80. Contract expired this month.

This is what happens when small municipalities are ignored. They work with local telecoms or do it themselves. Ans the costs are always better.

@scottalanmiller You don't have to go all that far to find really crappy Internet, even though we aren't even in the slightest of poorest countries. Glad to see that somebody is doing something with all of their money and power to help the rest of humanity.

Yeah, but even rural America with the worst options, you have the options of leased lines, bad satellite, moving, fixed wifi, etc. It's awful, but never as limited as being in a country where free Internet (free as in freedom) doesn't exist, or there is no provider at all that you can legally use.

The US really needs this competition. They say that the latency is low on 5G with 2-4ms, but the FCC claims Verizon FiOS is 10ms. But as a FiOS user, I can tell you, it's definitely 2-4ms all the time.

Of course, this directly affects all ISPs, but I'm also curious to see if this will also affect cell phone carriers worldwide. Will they also go bankrupt in time or will they have to adapt to stay relevant? Would cell phines even be able to communicate? Currently no, but in the near future?

It looks like it's being pitched as a competitor to cellular devices.

That'll take a lot of work to get mobile devices able to talk to it. If they can get that cheap and reliable, it'll be the killer thing.

Business class. . HA 15 down and 2 up for that many people and businesses.

Actually expecting them to get their billing in order. What a joke! I'd send them invoices for all the time spent sorting out their fake billing scheme as an attempt to charge you more.

Each house had the 15x2 connection. Not shared.

I was talking to a friend who is an attorney and he said to keep track of all the hours we've been working on this and we should be able to get 3x our hourly rate for the time we've been spending on this. We're at about 10k in billing rate.

@scottalanmiller said in Your Library is an ISP:

even your home would be an ISP if you were to intentionally provide public access, it looks like.

So the question is - is he intentionally providing public access? The bigger question to me is - is he legally allowed to provide public access - that's seemingly unlikely, I would expect the consumer connection he gets from his ISP does not allow him to grant public access, but maybe it does.

Right, to do that intentionally you need an upstream connection that hasn't forbidden that, and "all" consumer ISP connections forbid that in the contract.
