It is clearly the Bing rewards stuff.

He signed up for something and is getting spammed for it.

I do have to give them credit for the Super Troopers reference in the second one.

Mine seems to always been something about Green Ocean. What I want to know is how is it possible that MS doesn't know to catch that as spam!! I must have market a thousand of those spam messages by now. Always the same and always insanely obviously spam.

@jt1001001 said in Met with fiber isp guy, he gave us a proposal:

Many times, as mentioned these are VoIP lines that are just connected to an ATA and will not support modems or faxes.

The first part is basically always. Fiber can't deliver POTS, so to get something that looks like POTS across it, VoIP is the only reasonable way. It HAS to be digital one way or another, so only VoIP is sensible.

I read that article yesterday. Hopefully, if he's correct, the feds (or whatever secret police force) will kick his door in and get trigger happy. Cyber criminals should be hunted like the vermin they are.

While I agree punishment is due, outright murder but not so accurate firing range is not the best approach.

Arrest him, and put a needle in his arm.

PV or HVM for new VMs in XS?

@scottalanmiller said in PV or HVM for new VMs in XS?:

HVM is the current recommendation. This is going to change again soon when some new PV driver advances from the HVM side get back ported to the pure PV side. So eventually we expect PV to take the lead again as it is a more solid design. The biggest thing is that the HVM side uses hardware assist but PV is pure software. PV is getting hardware assist added to it and when it does it is expected to be basically container level speeds.

Agree, PV/containerization is going to be the next BIG thing: http://thenewstack.io/hypervisors-container-era/ .

The patch released yesterday for Win10 1607 seems to have fixed this issue. I can now move our massive unindexed userdata file share to our indexed file shares that have been empty for 6 months.

Have one user that uses one of these daily. He is the main sales guy here. I really like this laptop.
Another user brought her personal Spectre in today for setting up a vpn connection. Still really like it, but that trackpad is atrocious. If your hands are larger than a cute kitten's paw good luck typing anything on the kb without touching the trackpad and moving the focus to some random part of the screen. There is also a bit too much vertical travel when trying to press the buttons in the trackpad.

Man, do I hate trackpads of any kind. So this is a sweet laptop all around for someone who owns a USB mouse?

I use a mouse for everything. Trackpads are terrible. At least non-Mac ones mostly work. Mac trackpads, the worst ever.

Especially the gigantic, more recent ones. I had a 2009 MacBook (not pro) that had the sweetest trackpad on it... and I hate trackpads, lol.

YEah, the new enormous ones, they make the keyboard hardly reachable.

I think the blame sits with using it a few days too long.

The glass isn't half empty or half full, the glass was too big.

Yes I suppose that's correct. I should have retired it sooner, but it was for me a bit like that Seinfeld episode where Kramer takes a new car for a test drive and wants to see how long he can go with the tank on E.
Also, someone(s) who worked here from 2010-2015 should have done that way before I started. But they(all of them) didn't do anything, for nearly ten years.

If you replace the PSU's proactively every 6-8 years servers should go for a very .... very... long time. Especially with older stuff where electron migration is really a non-issue. Can even replace the caps on the mobo with a soldering iron, testicular fortitude and $5 worth of parts.

Problem is, that not every bad capacitor looks like one. Could also be a cold soldering point, for example.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldering https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guide-excellent-soldering/common-problems

And be extra cautious when handling large capacitators found in in PSUs or HiFi devices: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/captest.htm#ctsaf, http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/safety.htm

At least it's not the old CRT tubes! We didn't learn to fix the things in school, but we learned all about needing to ground the things out as soon as the outside case comes off.

Pops and I quit working on the CRT ones about the times the flat screens started coming down in price. It just wasn't worth it for all the hassle for dealing with the CRTs. I had one explode on me while we were testing a repair job, ha ha.
