    • RE: InfoWorld on Everyday Encryption

      @scottalanmiller

In the hereditary world, it takes zero mental capacity to be a world leader. Dead people have even pulled it off. In the democratic world, being smart almost certainly bars you from office as the average person is put off by smart people. Democracies naturally promote the worst, not the best.

I don't really agree with that. I think that, for office, you have to have some smarts. It's problematic to come off as intellectual, yes, that is certainly true. But actual stupidity doesn't pay. I think it pays to be good at looking stupid while playing 'the game' very well.

Not saying that office attracts the SMARTEST people, though, nor the kindest or best. And about the puppets, Frank Herbert said: Power does not corrupt, but power attracts the corruptible. If he is right, we should elect people for office who aren't interested 😉

    • RE: It's been a while... But lots of news around Nextcloud ;-)

@JaredBusch Hmmm, the post was mostly meant to also try and help ppl coming from, say, ownCloud 5 - they will get in trouble with the apps, finding the old tarballs etcetera.

If you're on 8 or 9, there is not much news because it isn't, or rather- shouldn't be too hard. Would really like to know what problems you had as we have to fix those 😉

Note that Nextcloud 11.0.2 comes early next week, Monday probably.

    • RE: ownCloud updates & app approval process

not at all, it will refuse to run as we removed a bunch of old code abstracting the file system away to make it all work on Windows. This code was unmaintained, slow and buggy but without it data loss is immediate (rather than just 'likely, at some point').

@scottalanmiller said in How Do You Rename a Note in NextCloud:

Hmmm... I wonder which is better. Maybe a little flag of some sort. Having something official would be good. And having something of a rating would be nice.

Yeah, we want to add a rating, but we keep debating the how/what of the rating 😉

Will be there some day. And an 'official' flag exists, some apps have it, others don't.

On a different note, we now have Ubuntu 16.04 packages in testing for the client and stable for the server 😉

    • RE: What do you think, did we do this right?

      Thanks for the replies, guys.

WRT the 3 weeks vs 90 days, yeah, this was a bit of a balancing act. We wanted to keep this under the radar as long as possible but of course people started tweeting and talking about it so black hats could pick up on it. We asked a few journalists who contacted us with questions to not talk about it and they were kind and responsible enough to keep quiet but we didn't expect to be able to keep it quiet for 3 months... In the end, three weeks is what the CERT's asked for and they're the experts so we went with that.

    • THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!

Thank you to everybody who helped: Nextcloud 9 is out. This was only possible thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response we got and the many contributors who immediately got involved! We are grateful for the help and promise: we'll stay true to you and open source!

      image

That means: NO proprietary apps, no separate 'enterprise' functionality. Everything open, free, and ready for you to make a difference.

And as a taste, Nextcloud 9 introduces upload-only shares and enterprise-grade logging. Just for you.

See the announcement and get migrated now!

If you want to help: sharing this on social media is SUPER helpful. So is sending it to press or submitting it to forums everywhere. Make a difference and help people on a well maintained, more secure solution for their file share and sync needs!

@john-nicholson said in Why Free Open Source Software Is Cheaper Than You Think:

The only issue I have is Outlook crashes one a day, Skype 4 Buisness is unusable (but that's true on Windows) and Onedrive is a giant turd.

Now there are three reasons to install Nextcloud 😛

Our Outlook add-in can help Outlook crash more, you can dump Skype and OneDrive and use the Nextcloud Video Calls and file handling. Kidding about the first one 😄

@travisdh1 yeah, it will take some time, but not long. 2 pieces are in already, 3rd is nearly done (theming) and we will have Shibboleth done soon, too. Doing it in the open brings real benefit in terms of speed and quality, Jan blogged about that: https://nextcloud.com/why-open-source-rocks/

    • RE: Why Free Open Source Software Is Cheaper Than You Think

I'm a long time Linux advocate - heck, I volunteered in the KDE desktop community for over a decade and was community manager for openSUSE so you can't claim I have no horse in the game 😉

But, honestly. Linux desktops are great for sysadmins and ppl who, like me, live in the browser and their mail client. Marketing folks, thus 😛

But a designer or people who MUST use Microsoft office - I concede they're more productive with a WIndows or Mac, provided some expert (who probably runs Linux themselves) maintain and secure it and clean up the shit when it inevitably goes wrong...

    • Join and exchange best practices – ownCloud Connects Business Users on June 1st

So ownCloud, Inc. takes care of enterprises using ownCloud in their business. But there are plenty enterprises using ownCloud who aren't customer of ownCloud, Inc. and as we care about the whole ownCloud ecosystem rather than only the part that directly makes us money, we're organizing an event for them.

      talk in progress

It's a bit of a trial, the first time we do this so it's restricted to the German speaking market right now - that was mostly a matter of convenience for us.

We do it alongside a customer event, adding a 2nd track with only community speakers - and we're still looking for new speakers. If you're interested in participating we'd really appreciate it if you were willing to talk a little about your use case and how you employ ownCloud (community edition) in your business! See here for more info on to participate and tick the box if you're willing to talk about your use on our registration page.

Feedback on the initiative is very much welcome!

This release now notifies you of what's happening on the server (new shares, maintenance window etc) and when syncing of a file was problematic. And it's faster and more reliable, so get it!

I wonder what the release schedule looks like for 10.

Between beginning and end of August, I'd say, but we have been rather in ad-hoc mode the last 2 months. A solid plan will hopefully come out of our hackweek in Stuttgart (you're all invited!)

@jospoortvliet Did you use CentOS or Debian/Ubuntu?

Neither, I run openSUSE on my server 😉

The default how-to was made on Ubuntu LTS but clearly, it works at least on openSUSE just fine, too. If CentOS has any issues, let me know how to adjust the manual on https://nextcloud.com/collaboraonline (or do a pull request, we have our website entirely in github: github.com/nextcloud/nextcloud.com )
