correct, we forked for a wide variety of reasons - you can find some of them in my last talk (video) as well as on our about page.

And Nextcloud 10 is FULL of good stuff so tell others so they will do the same as you did - find out just in time there's a new kid in town

So I've just blogged about Google disconnecting a few hundred accounts of people who bought phones for a reseller. The reseller had been doing that since the first Nexus, never an issue - until now. Google changed their Terms of Service (you know, the 300 pages of dense legalese you never read) and bang.

I'd argue it isn't smart to have all your data in one spot, esp if you can get punished for breaking one rule somewhere you didn't even knew existed by killing access to all your email, chat, pictures, documents etc...

Also - do a backup of your stuff at Google, Apple, Dropbox etc NOW.

I'm indeed from ownCloud, nice to see you all. I've been told this is a cool place and we should tell people here about what we're doing. So I just posted a development report, a bit of a behind-the-scenes of ownCloud development. If you're interested, I can try to post more...

Hmm, did you click the link about the terms of service in my blog? While Google has the right to do this, they might have "you give your firstborn to us by using GMail" in their terms of service for a year before anyone will notice, I bet. This reselling was OK for years. If they had a problem with it, they could've said something last year, or the year before, or the year before that or that and so on. Immediately and without any warnings shutting down people's entire digital lives is harsh and over the top, I certainly stand by that. What's legal isn't always what is right and vice versa.

Besides, it is ridiculous that they disallow you to sell a legally bought device to someone else. Nobody should have the right to tell you what to do with the hardware you paid for - that's an entirely different problem but one I'm also quite pissed off about. The industry is pushing all that sh** on us with their terms of service. Where is the time you bought something and then OWNED it?!?!!? What is next, you can get sued or go to jail for making changes to your car without consent from the company which sold it to you. Oh, wait, that is not 'next' but already happening.

Some great news over the last weeks about #nextcloud and other #opensource projects.

We published a blog 2 days ago about Sia integration in Nextcloud. Sia is a p2p storage tech that uses blockchain for contract & payment handling. It is pretty cool, fully open source, about 10x cheaper than other cloud storage technologies and, in short, something you must check out

We also did a blog about OpenID SSO integration thanks to Gluu, another open source project integrating in Nextcloud. Super cool, once again!

Note that we do a staged roll-out: only 15% of the users on Nextcloud 11.0.3 on the Stable release channel currently receive an update notification for Nextcloud 12. If you wish to update with the updater even though there is no notification, you can set the channel to beta, reload the page and proceed to upgrade. After the upgrade set the channel back to stable!

https://github.com/nextcloud/updater_server/pull/65 -> due to a calendar/contact issue (which is really bad behavior of the clients but what can you do...) we decided to only increase the % when 12.0.1 is out. That should be in about 1-2 weeks.

For those of you interested in videos from the ownCloud Contributor Conference - we just published a whole bunch on our YouTube account.

Just to give an idea: we had a theater director open the conference followed by a keynote from our project founder with some cool announcements.

Further came talks about encryption and security, the android client, LDAP, building a community and more.

We'll publish further videos the coming weeks but I'm on holiday in Italy for two weeks so I'll start publishing the rest of them probably only after that...

I just published another batch of over a dozen ownCloud videos. Some include ownCloud specific topics, others are more generic like a new WebDAV sharing standard in development, JSXC: the JavaScript XMPP Client, and my own presentation on why you're not as smart as you think. I did try to stuff too much in that 6 min talk which didn't work well - if I give the talk again, either in a longer time or in a cut-down version, I'll share again

Afaiks not yet. The Fedora ownCloud maintainer hasn't decided if/when he moves to Nextcloud, does both, or what.

I guess the Nextcloud 10 release and after will show how far ahead we'll pull and at that point it will be easier to make a decision on these things.

@scottalanmiller at the moment we're not doing any packaging. We work on a VM and a docker image but that's about it, in no small part because we simply focus on development.

I hope community members will pick this one up, I personally also like to hav RPM's. Of course, we are also overhauling the built in updater, so perhaps that will be good enough soon.
