    • Nextcloud community doing well - business, too.

I know many of you followed what happened with own/nextcloud. Last week I shared that our community is now, by far, the most active open source file sync and share project - that's something we're proud off. But long-term it is important the business side also works out.

We had secured three years of funding to get us started, but as of last week, we are profitable - that's right, took us only 6 months. πŸ˜„

We're at 24 people now, making money - so you can imagine we have an aggressive growth strategy to execute ahead of us. We are looking to fulfill a LOT of different roles, from marketing and sales to various engineering positions like Qt, front- and back-end, Android, iOS and more. If you're interested in working with us crazy bunch - check out our jobs page πŸ˜‰

And just for you mangolassians - tomorrow, we'll publish our Nextcloud 11 RC. We really can use some testing as we're unable to find any more issues. You can win an exclusive Netcloud t-shirt if you find an upgrade bug (going from Nc10 to 11) so get ready! Keep an eye on our news page tomorrow.

    • With all the cyber security scare - here's some positive private cloud stuff ;-)

      Hi all,

There's a big scare out there about ransomware and we turned 1 year old this month so perhaps some good news for private cloud owners:

      • ⚑️Supercharge ⚑️ your collaboration with Circles 0.11, bringing better UX, activities & federation!
      • Really cool app, Group Folders, coming with an update soon (tomorrow, I think, we'll try to blog about it on Monday)
      • Developers, especially of Javascript web apps, will be interested in a guest blog by Buttercup.pw developer Perry MItchell about integrating Nextcloud and other WebDAV compatible cloud platforms as storage backend.
      • And we did a post about migration from ownCloud - we wrote a migration script that makes it super easy.

      Enjoy the weekend πŸ˜‰

    • ownCloud Android app v1.8 is out!

The new Android app comes with many improvements including Material Design, file copy, text file preview and more. I know a lot of users have waited for this so - here it is! The best part: this release would not have been possible without the extensive help from community volunteers. Read their story in the blog post I wrote about the new release!

A great example of how community involvement makes things better. And sorry for the HUGE screenshot, no idea how to make it a bit more... humble πŸ˜„

    • Why (A)GPL software is better for your business - give input please!

I recently published a blog about open source licenses.

Now isn't hard to argue when proprietary licenses are so universally shitty - I link to this and it is a good read.

But of course there is more to it. Certainty about longevity of the support, quality - they are arguments, too. You still have to do your own investigation, actually I often see business people don't realize this nor know how easy it is.

So a special tip for all of you: want to know how an open source project is doing? Check out Github Pulse and other statistics!

As an exercise, and note I obviously have a stake here and am totally biassed about file sync and share, but here are four projects. Compare and tell me which one is doing great and which one is closer to death:

      https://github.com/nextcloud/server/pulse
      https://github.com/pydio/pydio-core/pulse
      https://github.com/haiwen/seafile/pulse
      https://github.com/owncloud/core/pulse

Be sure to digg a little deeper. Sometimes, the monthly view looks different. And there are more statistics behind the pulse, which come with developments over time.

You can see, for example, that pydio has a very cyclic development process here:
      https://github.com/pydio/pydio-core/graphs/commit-activity
      0_1478790518038_Spectacle.b13983.png
      While Nextcloud is more variable:
      0_1478790628734_Spectacle.n13983.png
And ownCloud is on the way down:
      0_1478790653926_Spectacle.R13983.png

Note also that each project has more repositories, though these core repo's are often the most important ones, they don't tell the whole story and sadly as far as I know, github doesn't provide a real overview of an entire project.

So, when your boss asks you to pick a project or product to use, this should be a part of it: how healthy is development!

    • RE: LibreOffice Online

So yesterday we announced that we're working with Collabora on this. They were already working on this (sssht, secret) and when the cat went out of the bag, as linked by the topic poster, they hired the guys who did the work on that one to keep them from ruining the fun πŸ˜‰

Some time next year (not before summer!), there'll be a product based on this. Awesome features like collaborative editing are coming, too, this wasn't really meant to be advertised before January (FOSDEM!) but, well, the students-who-are-now-hired started the fire early.

    • Nextcloud 12 Beta 2 is out and you can earn a t-shirt by testing it ;-)

I just blogged about our 2nd beta which is now available! We're still squashing bugs but it is time to really give this release a work-out so we're asking everyone to pitch in and test an upgrade. Most of us have upgraded our private instance (I just did, no problems here) and it is becoming harder to find bugs so - please, help out!

If you find a update/upgrade bug and report it and it's unique, there is a t-shirt in it for you πŸ˜‰

      Learn more in our blog!

Oh and on my server, all apps were upgraded and not disabled except some that weren't yet compatible:
      6d56c2c1c1b687f82d851b019249c0a734922745.png
I updated the Collabora Online app but it isn't compatible (yet), neither are the other apps. Coming soon, hopefully!

And... Love the very detailed tips on mis-configuration:

    • Awesome: ownCloud has over 8 million users and more updates ;-)

We've got a blog on owncloud.org about how ownCloud has grown to 8 million users. I've updated owncloud.org/history with new statistics, too, see the top of the page. Exciting, right? If you're curious about the origin of the numbers, I gave some hints in the blog but let me just say that it helps that we know of some HUGE deployments in India and Brazil, over a million each and more of such government related deployments are in the works. Of course, home user growth and use at providers has also been impressive and ownCloud, Inc. has served over 300 customers now, that isn't insignificant either.

I had a blast last weekend at SCALE and am looking forward to FOSDEM this weekend, if you're there, come say hi! Will blog about SCALE and ownCloud later.

      More ownCloud updates:

      • we're working on improving the upgrade process
      • We're also overhauling activities and notifications
      • ownCloud mail is making progress

And I personally created some fuzz when I told people not to use distribution-provided ownCloud packages.

A earlier blog about WHY to upgrade and subsequent blogs about how to upgrade were less controversial πŸ˜‰

I also have tips on how to get started with ownCloud app development, the quick and dirty way and how to patch ownCloud easily and quickly with features and fixes from github.

Shoot if you have comments or questions!

Win an iPhone 7 and help Nextcloud by voting at Storage Insider for your favorite private cloud! http://www.storage-insider.de/award/

Yes, of course, I shouldn't ask perhaps. But hey, it'd be nice to win that award and if one of you wins an iPhone it's double win as far as I am concerned πŸ˜‰

    • It's been a while... But lots of news around Nextcloud ;-)

Busy few days in #Nextcloud - 3000 students move to Nextcloud 11 and we had a blog about why Netcloud ag deploys our tech at their customers.

Bjoern blogged about the legal dangers of mixing proprietary with AGPL code (even got a reply from ownCloud COO Holger Dyroff), Swapnil wrote about how #Trump and #Brexit should be motivation to get your private cloud and I blogged about our team-of-11 ppl at FOSDEM and the other events we will be at the coming weeks and months: SCALE, FOSSAsia, Mobile World Congress and more.

I also wrote an extensive blog about upgrading to Nextcloud 11 from very old oC releases.

Oh and - #ilovefs of course!

And we will NOT be doing any proprietary code, all 'enterprise' functionality will become available, fully open source, the coming weeks. Yay πŸ˜‰

@JaredBusch The 9.0.53 -> 10.0.1 was the last time I have to do it by hand, I hope!

That is the plan, yes. The new updater should take care of the next update. We're also working on improving the graphical upgrade process to be bullet-proof with regards to PHP timeouts but that one is though.

Hi all! Happy new year πŸ˜‰

We released Nextcloud 11.0.1 - go get it, security and stability updates FTW!

I also just published a blog about 7 years ownCloud - and the five people at that very first meetup!

I also invited those 5 on stage at our conference to talk about that sprint, long ago. Did you know it was a KDE hackathon? ownCloud started as KDE project, I was there when it was announced in 2010 in San Diego. That's right, ownCloud is a KDE project started in the USA πŸ˜‰
