    • Black Screen of death! Is this a Dell thing?

Hi Guys has anyone come across an issue where the computer powers on but after the manufacters logo (dell for example) the screen goes black and it stays on that screen?

Note: i can use our RMM remote tools to log onto the computer but it's also stuck on a black screen (so cant control it). I can however do file transfers and navigate via remote background to the 😄 - therefore the computer is online and working but the screen for end user (and us remotely) is blank!

I've looked at new monitors, uninstalling graphics card drivers, running disk and hardware scans, system restores (fails) and a bit lost .... i'm seeing this happen more and more in the last couple weeks.

I dont know if Bitlocker has anything to do with it but have disabled this and rebooted but still have the black screen!

I have attempted to rollback updates and that also doesnt fix it!

      Safe mode works fine

Have updated drivers, bios, chipsets all of that good stuff but still no luck getting this working in normal mode and was curious to see if anyone else has had this one! Very odd!

In all cases, it's resulted in a re-format.

I think Dell devices are more affected.

    • RDS - Connecting to the RD Connection Broker Server

Hi Guys, has anyone ever come across this error?

In brief we cannot access the RDS Session hosts settings within server manager.
On occasion we have to log off users and do so via server manager > remote desktop services > then log off a user from a session.

Recently however we've been having an issue which is only fixable by rebooting the server. See below:

      RDS1.PNG
      RDS2.PNG

Whilst we have this error, all users are able to work fine and without a problem but from our own admin perspective cant do anything!

All services are running and I cant overcome this issue! Any pointers would be helpful.
      Thanks

    • Hyper V Image reset on startup/shutdown + NIC Settings

      Hi Guys
Wonder if you can help share thoughts on this.
A client of ours has a technical team that often like to test new routers, factory reset them and set them up for small remote sites. The tricky thing is, these guys should not be local admins on their computer (needed to change NIC settings etc and configure static ip's etc).

I was wondering how we can get around this and thought we could have a Hyper V solution installed on their laptops with a Windows 10 image - which they have full admin access too and could simply play around and do whatever they want in that environment (including configuring a Local router). My questions are:

      1. can we pass through NIC cards on the hyper V image? So if they plug in Ethernet cable to the laptop and into a local router, they can see this within the VM image and change/configure things from there?

      2. Would it be possible to have that VM Image reset each time they finish? IE. Can it reset back to the base image each time the VM is either started or shut down?

Let me know thoughts on this.
      Thanks

    • RDS - Drag and Drop / Copy and Paste - No longer working

      HI Guys

      Odd one for you..

We have an RDS Environment where we have Excel published as a remote app (Remote Excel). Users launch this remote app from their local device and work happily,

Within Remote Excel is a button that when clicked converts the document they are working on into a PDF and opens Remote Outlook so they can send the PDF direct from there - all works well.

HOWEVER, randomly on Monday, users lost the ability to copy/paste. And by this I mean they would previously copy addiitonal files from their local device and paste into Remote Outlook (attaching more files to the email). They could also Drag and Drop - which is what they did.

It's not a group policy thing and i have ensured when they connect to the remote app they have enabled clipboard and drives in the 'local resources' tab of the RDP app!

I'm lost for ideas on how to fix it. I have just rebooted the server as i thought maybe it was a bug kind of thing but nope!

Note: users can COPY local files and PASTE to the Remote desktop (if they log into the fully blown RDS server - as opposed to just launch the Remote Excel) but they cant Copy and paste into Outlook!

      Anyone got any ideas?

    • VMWare - VM Boot Problems

      vm.png

      Hi Team
I have an issue with an old VMWare server. There is a host VM (DC01) which fails to boot.
Its stuck in a automatic repair loop and I dont know how to get out of it.

I noticed (see pic attached) it says 'VMWare Tools' - Not Running - is this part of the problem?
I have a sneaky feeling, i may need to look at running the mbr boot rec steps but my query is - what are the steps in doing this? It's been a while since last done - I can google but wondered if there was anyone here with VMWare experience who can assist or provide some troubleshooting steps.

      Thanks

@Dashrender Always giving me sound advice. Thanks Dash. I actually figured this out whilst on site earlier today and just saw your responses.
Adding the computers into the security group we had for FolderRedirection and forcing a GPO update did the trick. Cheers

    • Folder Redirection - GPO - W7 to W10

Hi Guys, can you please help here.
We have a client who have 10x Windows 7 computers and have folder redirection configured on a server via a GPO. It sync their local desktop/documents/fav items to the server. It works well.

However, we are rolling out W10 now and replacing their old computers and when joining the domain, its not syncing their profiles. I pressume I need to change the GPO to reflect Win10 path, but not sure where/how/what i should change exactly?

Does anyone know the best way to map the folders back. EG. I have just plugged in the 1st W10 PC and have a blank desktop, is there a simple way of reconnecting it to look at the users profile?

      help and thoughts is appreciated.

    • Weird DNS issue - CradlePoint

      Hi Guys
I have started to have a weird DNS issue with a remote server.
Short story, we have 3servers (Domain Controller, FileServer and App Server - They have an internal 10.0.10.0/24 range). The App server publishes Excel as a remote app.

We have CradlePoint installed on all servers (which gives the servers a 172.86.160.0/24 range). And more recent then not, a lot of the time users are either unable to connect to the Remote Excel or otherwise fail to access shares on the FileServer.....We reboot the CradlePoint services and then things tend to work.....I noticed on the eventviewer, the following error:

The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
      with settings:

             Adapter Name : {4410502A-8F65-42DA-8A47-A905A8902F1D}
             Host Name : FS01
             Primary Domain Suffix : hq.DOMAINNAME.local
             DNS server list :
               	172.86.160.4
Sent update to server : <?>
             IP Address(es) :
               172.86.160.6

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running at this time.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

I dont want to keep restarting services or running register commands....Is there anything i can check to keep this more stable?

    • Hyper V - USB Disk not showing up

      Hi Guys
Wonder if you can help shed some light on this.

      I have a Hyper V core host machine with 2x VM's installed (1x DC and 1x SQLServer).
We have a USB device (8TB) plugged into our host, (put offline) and then bought online within our SQLServer. This has been working well and we use the USB to backup.

HOWEVER, recently the USB from the SQLServer has disappeared and we cant bring it back online! We've rebooted servers but it still wont show up on our SQL Server.

Note: we use Windows Admin Centre to manage the host and VM's and in the pic you can see within Admin Centre you can see in the settings for the SQLServer shows our 8TB Hard Drive, however when we list disk's on the actual VM we dont see it!!! DiskMago.JPG

Can anyone help identify how we can bring our USB back online?
This did happen before and it seems the way we bought it back online was by going on site and using Hyper V Manager software to re-attach the drive but seems a long winded way to bring it back visible. Any ideas?

      Thanks

    • RE: How many vCPUs can I have?

So our host is HyperV 2016 core.

So if this is a 20 thread processor, could I be assigning double the amount of vCPUs?

The reason I asked is because we did have high cpu usage on our app01 and sqlserver but after adding one additional vcpu this massively helped so I was thinking, should I just double what I’ve got in there already and I’ll be okay?

    • How many vCPUs can I have?

      Hi all

We’d like to deploy a new server,
The host has an Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processor. I believe this has 10Cores.

We have 4x VMs running. All various requirements. Ie. One file server, one sqlserver, one application server and one DC. We’d like to allocate our vCPU’s accordingly and for now have it set as:

      DC- 1
      FS - 2
      APP - 3
      SQL - 4

The App and SQL run applications that are relatively heavy on resources. RAM doesn’t have an issue as we have 120GB spread appropriately so each VM has enough. however CPU on our App01 and SQL can be high.

I was wondering based on the server processor our host has, how many Virtual Processors can we use?

      Thanks

    • Migrating AD Users to a brand new server

      HI Guys,
Can someone please help explain how we can migrate Windows Server 2016 Active Directory users (and groups) from one server, to a brand new server (different domain)? Is there a Export/Import tool we can use?

To confirm, we want to bring all the OU's and users from the old server onto a new one.
      Thanks in advance.

    • RE: HyperV Server - Raid Best Practices

This got a little heated :face_screaming_in_fear:
-So can we clarify, back to the OP - Consensus out of the options I have, Option 2 is the best way to go?

6x 2TB 12GB/s Drives in OBR10 for everything and then creating two partitions (1 for the HyperVisor OS) and then (1 for data - to store all my Virtual Machines and Data).

My VMs would be in D:\Hyper-V\VM's
My Virtual Hard Disks (daily data) would be in D:\Hyper-V\Data

    • HyperV Server - Raid Best Practices

      Hi guys.
Im drawn between two setup scenarios for a new server:

      Option1:
      2x 240GB SSD Sata 6GB (for OS)
      4X 2TB 12Gb/s (for Data)
I was planning on using Raid1 for the OS and then Raid5/6 for the Data storage

      Options2:
6x 2TB Drives in OBR10 for everything and then creating two partiions (1 for OS) and (1 for data).

Is there any better options? What would you do.

Environment will be Windows running. The server (bare metal) will run HyperV Server and the data drive will home 3x VM's (1x SQL, 1x DC and 1x FileServer).

      Thoughts welcomed and appreciated.

    • Guide for VM Server Migration...

      Hi Team
So I was wondering if anyone has posted before, or can create a step by step (basic level) guide of how to migrate a VM.

Let me explain... I have an environment with approx 50 users and they use HyperV with three VM's running: (1xDC, 1xFileServer, 1xSQL Server).

I have a unused server with relatively good spec just lazing around so i'd like to put it to good use and do some testing, breaking and fixing on it. A couple of things i'd like to test/demo/try....

      1. taking those 3x VM's and migrating them to the demo/test sever.
Excuse my ignorance but could I quite simply copy those VDHX files from inital server, put them onto the new and spin them up (after matching the IP settings etc)? I was wondering if there was any simple guide on this someone has posted before? Is it as simple as that?

      2. Once I have those 3x VM's running, I'd like to then test replciating the server to an Azure environment - I appreciate there is more involved with his perhaps but I believe using the Windows Admin Centre tool - there are some links which will help me with this so for now (unless others again have a good guide on this), I'd like to start with part 1 and simply migrate those VMs from one server to another...

Is there any usefil tips/tricks/guides on this floating around?
      Thanks
