    • Folder Redirection - Roaming Profiles

So I read Roaming profiles are more of a headache than its worth and it's more beneficial to use Folder Redirection (desktop, docs and appdata). Would you agree Folder re-direction is best and if so, has anyone got a nice guide on how to configure this on Windows Server 2012/16?
      Thanks

    • Migrating AD Users to a brand new server

      HI Guys,
Can someone please help explain how we can migrate Windows Server 2016 Active Directory users (and groups) from one server, to a brand new server (different domain)? Is there a Export/Import tool we can use?

To confirm, we want to bring all the OU's and users from the old server onto a new one.
      Thanks in advance.

    • Internal domain name same as external domain - DNS issues!!

      Hi all

I'm having a problem with a new client server 2012 R2 where the internal domain name is the same as the external domain eg. companyname.com for internal AD domain name, and their website and emails are also on companyname.com (note: emails are with office365)

Internally if I ping the domain name, it replies back with the internal IP address (192.168.0.2) which is our DNS and Domain Controller and staff are unable to browse to their website.

I have created a manual WWW entry in DNS Manager so now staff can now go to www.companyname.com and it resolved but without the www it doesnt work.

I noticed in our DNS manager, there is an entry that says:

(same as parent folder) - Host A - 192.168.0.2 - I believe this is causing the problem. If i remove it, it simply comes back shorlty after as this is the default A record for the DC.

Is it a problem to have the internal domain name the same as external or should I rename? Can i rename? what do you advise?
Sorry if this is badly written but I hope you understand the nature of the query. Let me know if any Q's

      Thanks

    • RE: Internal domain name same as external domain - DNS issues!!

If having to tell/train users to type www. in front of their domain name to view their own website internally is the biggest problem I'll face then it's probably not worth me renaming/reconfiguring it all over again then.

Would there not be any other implications/issue's i'll face down the line?
If our email system is on office365 am I safe in saying the emails wont have any issues or be affected?

Should I want to rename the domain name to be AD.domain.com is that a big task to do?

    • IP and Subnets for Dummies

      Hi all

Maybe a stupid question but thats why I'm here... I typically support small networks between 1-50 users and have always used the IP subnet range 192.168.x.x / 24

I'm intrigued about using 10.0.x.x ranges or other subnets...Why would one use another range? I believe for security or bigger range but I'm clueless when it comes to subnetting and understanding the different net masks and getting my head around it hurts!!! So I guess the real question I'm asking is - can someone explain IP ranges and subnets in an dummy/idiot proof guide language and explain the benefits of using specific masks.

      Thanks in advance

We can access data whilst Old NAS is on but its 6 years old and the client (without telling us) ordered a new NAS, plugged in and configured it and then pulled drives out of old NAS (which is a ReadyNas 312) and were trying to copy the data from the old drive across to the new!!!

no, they've learnt a lesson and are now discussing an automatic daily backup - offsite and on premise.
I also learnt from your responses. thanks

    • Virtual Server - USB connection

      Hi Guys

Q: We have a virtual server running on a Hyper V hypervisor.
We'd like to use the USB ports within the VM on a daily basis....

I know you can plug the usb into the physical hypervisor and then RDP into the virtual and use the USB resources but we'd like to have a permanent access to USB ports from the virtual server when its plugged into the server....Is this possible and how do we do it if so.

      Thanks

    • Rackmounted Desktops

Maybe a silly Q, but what are the pro's / con's about rack mounted desktops?
TBH, I didnt even know about these until a new opportunity came to me wanting to setup a new office and wanted costs for new PCS....After providing costs, they said they were discussing the options of rack mounted them....How would this work? If they are all rack mounted they'd have cables running from the rack to each work station and it would look messy no?? Unless the rack is in the middle of the desks??? Can someone explain how users would connect eg monitors, keyboards etc and what the pro's/cons are???

they came back and said a rackmounted server with VDI for each user....makes sense...
My knowledge on VDI is limited....whats the pro's / con's over this solution in your option?

How does VDI work exactly? the server has the applications on and each user simply uses a remote app to open the application thats running on the server?

    • Hyper V - CPU Processing Power

      hi all.
wonder if you can help. I have a hyperV server with 2 VM instances running - 1 File server and 1 DC.
We've recently installed new AV software (McAfee Endpoint Protection) of which requires an SQL instance which we have installed and is running on the FS server.

I am now finding that the 'McAfee Scanner service' is taking up a lot of CPU space and in turn slowing things down when users access files.
I have modified the 'on-access' demand settings to only scan when writing to disk, not reading and will see how it behaves....But my question was more to Hyper V settings...Under the HyperV settings, there is a Resource Control feature where you can balance resources among the VMS.

I wondered if I could limit or change things here to help CPU usage from over flowing...Any ideas?

    • RE: Advice for new office setup

So, we're actually going for a 1GB bearer so each office will have a super super super amount of bandwidth to play with.
I will probably let it all open as SAM suggested and apply some QOS to priotitise phone and data traffic (can this also be done on Ubiiquiti ER8?) .

I will however limit the guest network in the building to only consume say 8mb for example as I dont want guests using much at all.

The guys are VERY heavy internet users and need a super quick and reliable network to work from so need a reliable and secure base infrastructure

Having tried to download the ISO from Microsoft they said - sorry, this product key is tied o the manufacturer and we need to contact them to get the Windows 7 recovery disk - I dont have the time to do that, so wondered if anyone had the HP Windows 7 pro disk to hand or a downloadable ISO link?

    • RE: Licensing query...

@Breffni-Potter It's a valid point and one we explored but the database is ridiculous in size and we need a beast of a box for it to process all the calculations. In testing we played around with different options but found a server with enough processing power, ram and cores worked a treat.

RE: Office. We have Office 365 so I was just planning on installing using those licenses.
