You mentioned an existing alarm system that you cannot hook up to. Can the landlord contact said alarm company to see what they offer?

Pagers are still a thing in a lot of places. Super convenient as they run on AA batteries and generally last the better part of forever on a single one.

I think for now I'm going to go with Crashplan business, mainly because it's 75% off. I'll push this off for a year and save a few bucks.

My user folder and my data drive are just over 500GB so not a huge backup, but still, CP is currently dead and waiting even a week to backup to BB hurts a little.

I do have O365 so I've got 1TB there. I actually store some Windows user folder (docs/music/images/videos) directly into OneDrive. I just don't want to use it as a "backup" in the fuller sense of the word. It's not exactly protected from crypto and would be a huge pain to recover from.

This exact thing happens to me, I've tried using APC, Tripp-lite, and CyberPower. The laser printer (not directly attached to UPS) but on same circuit warms up the fuser thus causing a brown-out condition on the circuit, then causing the UPS to activate to hold up the PC and other devices.. thus cycling its sealed lead acid 6v battery within a few seconds, causing them to go below 50%. This may work a few times but if it drops below 50% charge it damages the 6v battery.. thus will need to be replaced continually unless you move the laser printer or have the circuit conditioned to handle the greater load.

This entire discussion was stupid. There is never need to worry about a "best drive" for 99% of users. You buy what ever is cheap and available. Even more so because you have clearly stated this is a short term solution.

Say what you want, but th time you spent looking for drives, and then purchasing a drive that is probably double the cost of what you could have gotten, means money wasted.

Don't sweat it. I did one Google search, posted a thread on here, then looked at Amazon's popular stuff.

I didnt see anyone talk about preventing Crypto virus from encrypting files. We used AppLocker and it resolved the issue for us, if you are not using an enterprise OS then you can use Software Restriction Plicies.

This discussion is not on preventing cypto. this part of the discussion was on dealing with the backups in a way that they cannot become tainted.

I have an old Toshiba U505 Laptop that I use in my bedroom. It has KODI 17.1 and is hooked directly to My TV with HDMI and I go optical from my TV to my sound bar. I also use a TP-Link T4U wireless adapter its USB AC1200. I have had no problems.

The only thing in this menu is "Local storage" and "Removable storage".

The VHD files I have are not located on the local storage media, they are on my NAS backup device.

Somehow I have to get the VHD files off the NAS and imported into the existing VMs.

I'm not sure how to do this off the top of my head in XenOrchestra (me=fail). How I got my XO back was by using XenCenter. Have the VHD files available on the local machine, and then go to file -> import inside of XenCenter, and select one of the VHD files. You'll then get the normal vm creation questions, but without the storage creation. You should be good to go after the import.

Sounds reasonable. Then I just have to figure out how to copy the files onto the server local storage. There is no general "file browser" in XC where I can just copy files from the network.

The import takes care of that for you, you don't have to copy any files to XenServer yourself.

XenServer is 6.5.
XenCenter is 7.1 as of today.
The VM is headless Ubuntu 14.04 running Seafile.
I happen to also run a VM for XO but I don't know how that plays into this. Is XO better at extending partitions?

I eventually gave up trying to extend the partition anyway. The docs I found said I had to blast away the partition so I needed to move data around to do it. Just a pain in the butt. It was only a test install of Seafile anyway. I intend to build it up properly this round.
The only question is now, I really don't want to go through this again, or I need to set it up so changing drive size isn't as big a deal.
We've used up our 10GB of Box space so I could easily just throw, say, 50GB at the new setup and it would probably last us a half decade. But still, it would be nice to do this in a way where I can more easily adjust available space if the time comes.

If they are going to be your only client like this, I would just do the VPN thing. The fixed costs and overhead of some of the other tools are not going to be worth it.
